Dear Parents / Carers, Ark Schools has recognised Bolingbroke Academy as an exceptional school for English performance. At the Ark Schools Conference on Friday 12th February I was delighted to accept the first ‘Depth before Breath” award on behalf of the English Team. In assembly today it gave me enormous pleasure to present the award to Mrs Green (Head of English Department) and Ms Nobes (English Key Stage 3 Co-coordinator). Mrs Green made a superb acceptance speech thanking all your children for their hard work and to all our English teachers for their determination and commitment to see every child excel. We are currently in the recruitment season and I’m very pleased to announce 5 new teachers who will be joining the team in September. During these months we are appointing many new staff and in particular a number of experienced teachers with responsibilities for Key Stage 5 who will be teaching and preparing for our new Sixth Form curriculum in 2017. Mrs Orchin (English Teacher) graduated from Cambridge University with a degree in English with Education BA (Hons). She is an exceptional practitioner with 7 years’ of experience teaching GCSE & A level. She is relocating from Bath during the summer holidays to join us in September 2016. Ms McLaverty-Williamson (English Teacher) graduated from the University of Sheffield in English studies. She has grown up in the local area and is delighted to be commencing her career at Bolingbroke Academy. She is ambitious to see pupils passionate about reading and thrilled to be a part of our excellent English team. Ms Hill (Maths Teacher) will complete her training on the Teach First programme in July 2016. In 2014 she graduated from University of Nottingham in Economics and International Economics. She was attracted to Bolingbroke Academy via the Ark Schools Network and the superb professional development opportunities at our school. Mr Thomas (Art & Design Technology teacher) graduated from the University of Wales Trinity St. David in Fine Art & Combined Media in 2015. He is experienced and extremely passionate about Art, Photography & Graphic Design. He is looking forward to expanding the Art & Design department to facilitate enrichments and extend our course offer in these areas. Mr Gerry (Humanities: History teacher) became a teacher in 2015 after graduating from Queen Mary University with a History BA (Hons). He will be joining a terrific team of practitioners and is looking forward to developing incredible enrichment programme. Tonight is our 3rd annual Parent Quiz night lead by our winning teachers last year. I wish everyone success and look forward to announcing the results on the website on Monday. Ms Edis

SKI TRIP 2016 THURSDAY11TH - FRIDAY 19TH FEBRUARY
During the half term Bolingbroke Academy went on their first ever ski trip to Leysin, Switzerland. The trip was a great success with every student either improving their skiing technique or completely learning a new skill they had never tried before.
During the week pupil’s also had the chance to partake in numerous activities such as tobogganing, a walk to the local village, a quiz night and plenty of movie nights to aid recovery for the next day’s skiing. Thank you to all the parents who supported the trip and to all the teachers who made the trip possible. Ski trip 2017-Watch this space!

MFL YEAR 8 EUROPE TRIPS Ms Konneradt The Brussels and Aachen trips finally got lift off on Wednesday 10th February. Both were hugely successful and Team MFL would like to say a huge thank you to the following staff members who gave up many hours of sleep to be part of them: Ms Konneradt, Mr Sillah, Ms Mayotte, Ms Davidson Ms Wheeler, Mr Bismark, Ms Ponge We must also say a huge thank you to all year 8 pupils who attended. Their behaviour was really exemplary on both trips and meant that the day/night ran smoothly and was enjoyable for everyone. Thank you! BRUSSELS: Everyone was on time for a prompt departure with pupils behaving very well in the bus. Pupils took security and border controls at St. Pancras very seriously. For many pupils, this was their first time!
We had a nice and relaxing train voyage and once arrived, we made our way to the Comic Centre. Pupils were fantastically focussed on completion of the treasure hunt and they took great pictures! There was a lot to learn about the culture of comics. We then enjoyed some free time to get lunch. Pupils ordered delicious chocolate waffles, one of Belgium’s specialities! We then went through the beautiful Royal Gallery and arrived straight to the magnificent Grand Place. Pupils were impressed by the golden touch! Once there, they enjoyed some free time to purchase souvenirs and presents. I hope that many of you got a chance to get some! We all came back after a very wet walk back to the train station. Everyone was tired but delighted, having had such a pleasant day. A big thank you to staff who attended the trip. Again, a big thank you to all year 8s involved, it was a fantastic trip abroad! Photos will soon be displayed in the MFL corridors.

AACHEN After a very long and tiring bus journey, we arrived in Aachen circa 9.30am. It was freezing! The temperature remained at a ‘high’ of 1 degree; non-stop rain and large drops of snow meant that we had to wrap up warm! Our breakfast was ready and waiting at Café Van den Daele (also known as Alt Aachener Kaffeestuben). We refuelled on croissants and hot chocolate galore! Following this, we went to explore the Rathaus (town hall) from the outside, before splitting into 2 groups. One group went to the Printenbäckerei (Printen bakery) to learn how the famous Aachener Printen (a type of Lebkuchen) are made. Trying the samples was also great fun! The other group went to explore the hand craft shops of Aachen, before we changed over. Both groups then met in the Aachener Dom (cathedral) to see the famous stain glass windows there. Following this, further battery recharge was needed and pupils undertook their treasure hunt task (as best as they possibly could in the persistent rain). Many found lunch in the German Sausage Restaurant, where they sampled some of Germany’s finest Wurst! We visited the Lindt outlet, which was fantastic for stocking up on chocolate gifts. A long journey home was the lullaby for many of the pupils, followed by a late arrival back to school. I hope pupils managed to catch up on sleep the following day! Thank you so much to all involved and to parents/carers for collecting pupils in the early hours!
Brussels and Aachen Photo Competitions To enter the competition, your group must include the following pictures: □ □ □ □ □
A picture of your trio/friends having fun in Aachen/Brussels A selfie! A monument/building that you liked. A picture of the food you liked/ate. A picture of something that made you laugh.
Winning entries will be selected next week and prizes distributed!

LOST PROPERTY by Mrs Harris Thank you to so much to Mrs Ward, Ms Langhofer, and Mrs Howcroft for helping to sort out all the lost property. Any items that were named have been returned to the pupils. Unnamed items have been kept as spares as we were unable to return them. If you are missing an item please speak to Pupil Services who could try and assist you. There were lots of un-named non-school uniform/items that have not been collected. Unless these items are claimed they will be sold at the Spring Fair to raise funds. Please can we remind all Parents/Carers to label all items of clothing this really make it’s so much easier when items get lost. If you have any uniform items (including black shoes) in good condition that you would like to donate to the school or second hand stall at the Spring Fair please leave these items at Reception.
WELL DONE DAVIDE A big congratulations to Davide Castejon for placing second in a pairs fencing competition in Italy this half term. Especially since he is recovering from a broken arm. Well done! And good luck to him in his upcoming National competition in Switzerland!

EBI (Even Better If) Key themes
(1)Teachers high energy, committed, caring and enthusiastic.
(1)Behaviour, Sanctions, Detentions
(2) Behaviour and ethos.
(2) Communication
(3) Communication
(3) Teacher Retention
BEHAVIOUR, SANCTIONS & DETENTIONS The school recognises the need to separate detention groups, ie year 7 child sitting a ‘late’ detention should not be sitting with a year 10 child sitting a detention for defiance. The largest number of detentions relate to homework. Ms Edis explained how important homework is now given the change in the GCSE examination where coursework has been eliminated in most subjects. Independent study periods are available before and after school to help children with their homework and learn study techniques. Ms Brooks is currently working on homework timetables. Ms Bessa talked about ‘WellBeing’ which is available for all pupils who are ‘anxious achievers’ or worried about detentions. There are trained therapists available 5 days a week. Silent transition around school has now moved to “quiet” transition.

PARENT COUNCIL MEETING – JANUARY 2OTH – Cont. COMMUNICATION Biggest challenge at the beginning of this academic year (and impact on year 7) was the induction of 17 new teaching staff. That, in conjunction with the changes made with Civitas Tutors at Key Stage 4, meant that there have been some communication hiccups. Moving forward, the school/civitas groups will now stabilise and changes should be minimal. TEACHER RETENTION Keeping teachers is a challenge in London schools. Costs, commutes, promotions are all key factors. Bolingbroke is attracting good teachers due to its ethos. Professional development of staff is a key element to their retention. Areas of focus therefore are leadership skills etc. Maths is a national crisis. This has been addressed at Governor level where it has been agreed to “over staff” the maths department. At the end of the meeting it was agreed to organise the following:
‘Cheese and biscuit’ evening (for year 7 parent/carers) at the beginning of each academic year to explain the behavioural policy.
Focus Groups:
Communication Detention Relationship between Pupils and Teachers (year 8)
Parents/carers wishing to get involved in any of the above focus groups should get in touch with Mrs Harris or the Parent Council. If there is anything else you have questions about in relation to the minutes, please do contact the Parent Council on

IN THE LIBRARY “The Blackthorn Key” – by Kevin Sands Kevin Sands introduces us to Christopher Rowe a trainee Apothecary in 1665. He sets off in search of answers when his entire life is ripped apart by the Cult of the Archangel, responsible for a string of gory murders. Join him as he breaks codes, makes potions and tries to save the day using his brains and apothecary belt! I would recommend this book to all pupils who want to read a crime/mystery/ potion-filled book!

MATHS CORNER
10 News from Maths this fortnight
Our first week back has been incredibly busy, as always! I’ve been particularly busy with interviews for our growing team next year and am looking forward to introducing our exciting new staff members in the coming weeks. Unfortunately, Ms Banks has suffered an injury on the Ski Trip and so will not be in school for the first few weeks of term. Ms Hocking is covering her classes; she is working closely with Ms Banks to ensure continuity for the children. Our Year 7 and 8 pupils are all working on fractions and proportion topics, which are really crucial for lots of other aspects of Mathematics. Year 9 are taking their understanding of algebra to the next level, with a first look at inequalities and simultaneous equations. Year 10 are getting to grips with some really interesting shape problems – over the coming weeks they’ll be using some complex formulae to work out volumes and surface areas of cones and spheres. Take a look in their books – I’m sure you’ll be impressed! Top Tip from Team Maths: Place value 6 x 10 = ? What did you do to answer that question? I’m sure a lot of people would say “I added a zero”. Whilst this trick does work with integers, it is not the case for decimals: 0.6 x 10 = 6 NOT 0.60! We use a place value table for a fool-proof method that works for multiplying and dividing ANY number by 10, 100 or 1000. Digits move to the LEFT when you multiply and move to the RIGHT when you divide. Encourage your child to draw a table out if they are stuck. We hope pupils will get so confident in time that they can just imagine the place value table in their head – practice makes perfect! Parent Puzzle 10 Congratulations to James Love for correctly identifying that the shape in the last parent puzzle was a rhombus. There are a few names in the hat for our termly prize so far…will you be the first to answer this question and ensure you have a chance of winning too?! 12 splishes equals 4 splashes. 3 splashes make 2 sploshes. How many splishes make a splosh? E-mail your solutions to this week’s parent puzzle to r.donaldson@arkbolingbrokeacademy. Each correct answer goes into the termly draw to win maths equipment for your child (and a treat for you!)
It’s that time of year again….the PI challenge! 14th March is international pi day (because the date, written in American shorthand, is 3.14….). It’s a really big week for us in Team Maths as it is also the launch of the pi challenge. Pupils need to memorise pi to as many decimal places as they can for a chance to win glory for their house. This website should help them get practising: http://www.piday.org/million/ The current school record holder is Theo Rooney with an amazing 115 decimal pales…will his record stand for another year?!
Manga High – star performers We need to work really hard to improve our standing in the UK challenge – we’re currently in 78th place! I will update our star performers next week.… Pupils can log in at www.mangahigh.com. The school ID is 263860. All individual log in details should be written in planners!
Times Table of the Week… We’re pleased to announce that log in details have been updated and all pupils can now log in to www.ttrockstars.com to either practise on their own in the “studio” or compete with pupils across the country at “festivals”. Parents are encouraged to have a go too – it’s addictive! Have fun!

SPORTS
GIRLS FOOTBALL By Ms Luetchford On Friday 29th January Bolingbroke Academy attended the Under 13s Chelsea FC Girls tournament at Southfields Academy. Over ten schools attended the event. Even with the cold and wet weather, the girls managed to keep up their high spirits throughout the day. They kicked off their first match with an astonishing win with 6 goals to nil. This gave them the confidence they needed to get through to the quarter finals against Burntwood School and then to the semi-finals. This is where they came up against their toughest team: The Grey Coats. The match went into extra time where the girls managed to sneak a goal winning them the match. For the final the girls were up against Acton High. This match also went into extra time and then finally to the dreaded penalties. Unfortunately the girls narrowly missed out on first place but came away happy with silver medals. The girls showed great sportsmanship throughout the day and made Bolingbroke Academy very proud. Well done!

Ms Oliver and Ms Sherman are running the London Marathon! Please donate and help to raise money for TACT.
www.virginmoneygiving.com/emmabethhannah
Why Tact? Children in the UK from more disadvantaged backgrounds need our support if they are to succeed. Only 13.2% of children in care obtain five good GCSEs and only 6% of care leavers go to university. 1/3 of all care leavers are NEET. This is compared to 13% of all young people. Therefore the work that TACT do is vital to help improve the life chances of young people.
