By Bart Stevens Governor-elect HAPPY NEW YEAR to everyone! It is hard to believe we have turned the corner and entered yet another year, but turn the corner we have and WELCOME 2015!! As we prepare for Mid-Winter Conference, we prepare for the midway point of the Kiwanis year, incredible to believe, but true! One of my grandmothers use to say “just you wait Barton, the older you get the faster time flies”. Well, I guess I’ve reached that age as I cannot believe just how quickly time flies by? However, we cannot let time get in our way. There is much remaining to be accomplished as we celebrate our 100th anniversary. Each and every day is not only a new day but a new opportunity, an opportunity we should chose not to miss. The following came (slightly adapted) to me from another District. I “loved it” and

ENGAGEMENT - We are in the second year of the Formula, a Kiwanis sponsored and funded five-year plan, which is the year of engagement. What does it mean? It means growth. Our goal in New England + Bermuda is a net membership growth of

It’s time for the Mid-Winter Conference for New England + Bermuda! It's time to start planning to attend the Mid-Winter Conference. This is the coming together of all of the Kiwanians in the District to plan, share, motivate and create that enduring friendship that enables us to accomplish great things. But, just like our own family reunions, it doesn't seem right when it comes time for the family picture and some family members are absent. Our Kiwanis organization is a family, and we can never reach our potential unless all our family members come together. At this conference , March 20-22, we will take a picture. Will you be in it? We have worked hard to make it informative and fun with display booths offering information of all phases of Kiwanis; breakout sessions which are both pertinent and informative; a silent auction to benefit KPTI and the Eliminate Project; as well as fun and entertainment. We have structured this

event so you will have plenty of time to talk oneon-one about your situation. We want to help you make your dreams for your community a reality. Continuing the 100th anniversary theme being kicked off by Kiwanis International in Detroit, we will celebrate Saturday night with a 100th anniversary themed dinner, complete with Kiwanis entertainment. It is an exciting year ahead so I hope you can take the time to join us at the Holiday Inn Mansfield/Foxboro. I promise, you will walk away with a lot of information to take back to your clubs to truly make a difference for the children of the world! Please do your club and yourself a favor and become part of the picture. Without you, our family picture is not complete. Bart Stevens, Functions Chair

Keeper of the Patches Bob is the “Keeper of the Patches” from our international conventions, and also an avid pin collector. His collection takes up many cases which he had proudly displayed at his home in Haverhill. When Bob was Lieutenant Governor in 1998-1999 under Governor Ron Forest, he put his heart and soul into the job. His efforts paid off, as he received the “Outstanding Lt. Governor Award” from the Past Lieutenant Governors’ Committee.

Anyone who has met Bob Tandy and his wife Debi, immediately become friends with them. Many people know Bob through his work on the Bermuda Cruise (coming up in May, 2015) and also from his patch and pin sales at the conventions and conferences.

Proceeds from the sale of pins and patches are donated to district causes. Watch for a page on our website displaying all the patches we have available for sale. For information about pins, patches or our Bermuda cruise, contact Bob Tandy at 978-372-9890. NOTE: There’s a story behind almost every pin Bob has!

The Eliminate Project Recognition Policy for the Centennial Award Memorandum From:

Dr. John R. Button, President, Kiwanis International Bob A. Parton, President, Kiwanis International Foundation Randy J. DeLay, Chairman, The Eliminate Project

Subject:

Centennial Award policies

On behalf of the millions of unseen mothers and babies who “live beyond the end of the road” and are at risk for Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus, we thank you for your dedication, financial support and leadership to The Eliminate Project. Because of you and with our UNICEF partners, we are on our way to realizing a world without the devastating effects of MNT. We have a new gift recognition piece that commemorates Kiwanis International’s 100 years of service to the children of the world. The Centennial Award is an exclusive and time-sensitive recognition piece whose proceeds will go to The Eliminate Project. The Recognition Subcommittee, chaired by Dr. Button, worked diligently to create the design of the award and make recommendations on the gift recognition policies. Below are the policy decisions that were approved by the Executive Committee: • The Centennial Award is a Kiwanis International award recognizing 100 years of service. Proceeds from the Award will go to The Eliminate Project. • The donation amount is $1,500 which may be paid over two years. • Clubs and individuals must only use funds donated between October 2014 and June 2015 to be eligible for the award. • The recognition pieces include: a lapel pin with the words “100 Years of Service”, a framed medallion and personalized certificate. • The donor will receive the lapel pin upon making a $1,500 pledge. He/she will receive the framed certificate and medallion after the pledge is fulfilled. • The framed medallion and certificate is personalized; therefore, it impossible to have immediate on-site presentations of the framed pieces. The pin can be presented on-site. • There will be no pins or framed certificates/medallions awarded until January 2015, beginning at the Rose Float parade events in Pasadena.

Do you know of the Model Club Match? Dear Kiwanis Leader, Do you know we have an exciting new opportunity for our Kiwanis clubs? Do you know that each new Model Club that turns in the Model Club commitment form is eligible to receive the amount equal to one year of the amount remaining towards its Model Club commitment? A typical club has 33 members. The Model Club goal is $24,750 per club. On average the clubs in our District have raised $3232, leaving $21,518 remaining to be a Model Club. If you make a 5-year pledge today to be a Model Club, you will receive a match equal to the amount of one year’s worth of fundraising (20%) or $4,304. Leaving $17,214 to raise in 5 years or $3,442 per year. Note: Your Club may be different as this is an average of the 125 clubs that have made a donation. Funds cannot be applied retroactively to clubs that have pledged to be a Model Club. This match can be applied to clubs that upgrade to a Platinum or Gold Club. Do you know you can use the same Model Commitment form and make a note that your club is using the anonymous Model Club matching funds? Do you know the Model Club match is an excellent opportunity to increase our number of Model Clubs in the District and help us reach our goal of $1 million to help save 555,555 lives? Do you know the sooner funds come in with Model Club pledges, the sooner we can get the lifesaving tetanus vaccines out to women in the remaining 24 countries still at risk with MNT? Will your club say yes to women and babies who need our help now? Will your club say yes to saving lives? Please ask your Directors and/or club to commit to become a Model Club.

KFNE Receives Matching Grant at Fall Conference

By John Maihos KFNE President In a few short months, members of the New England and Bermuda District of Kiwanis helped the Kiwanis Foundation of New England raise $50,000 to benefit the programs at the Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Institute. CLUB NEWS

Kiwanis Family Membership By Fred Bishop Past International Trustee

The New England District is among only three districts chosen to pilot the Kiwanis Family membership program. The purpose is to determine if this special option can increase our membership. If this is demonstrated, Kiwanis could make the pilot program permanent. If not, the option will probably be discontinued in 2-3 years. So the lesson is “use it or lose it”. The pilot enables up to two additional Kiwanis members living at the same residence as a primary member (who pays the regular dues amount) to enjoy Kiwanis membership at discounted rates. Family members do not need to be related, but only to live at the same location. A family member pays only half the normal amount for District and International dues and is not required to pay for the Kiwanis magazine subscription. Also, since the insurance portion of membership dues may be paid entirely from the club’s service account, the club does not have to col-

lect it from the member. This enables a New England Kiwanis Club to charge a family member annual dues as little as $50 and still retain some of this for its administrative account. The one-time enrollment fee is also discounted to $28 for new family members. Family members hold the same privileges of membership as primary members. In my club, both our president and vice president are family members. The Hooksett NH Club has enjoyed great success with this program. It now has 19 family members. A culture has developed to invite both husband and wife to join the club at the same time. Additionally, a little gentle peer pressure has resulted in an existing husband or wife getting the spouse to join. Side benefits from the program include a greater retention rate and a new female family member recruiting additional women to join.

to join your club. Although these former SLP members are charged the same enrollment fees as nonformer SLP members, District and International dues are then completely waived for the following two billing periods. Although the club is assessed magazine and insurance charges, as stated earlier, the club can pay the insurance charge from its service account. The result can be charging former SLP members annual dues as low as $15-$25 for two years. Hopefully they will be then “hooked on Kiwanis” by the time they graduate to normal club dues. Anyone who would like suggestions or additional information is encouraged to contact me at [email protected] or 603-6251555.

Another great option is to recruit former Key Clubbers or Circle K’ers

Hooksett Kiwanis Supports Youth Soccer Organization By Fred Bishop For the past several years, Hooksett Kiwanis has staffed the food booth at the annual Hooksett Youth Athletic Association (HYAA) Soccer Tournament. Kiwanis members cook hamburgers and hot dogs and served these along with chips and beverages throughout the day. This relieves parents of athletes, who would normally be working the food stand to watch their children play in the tournament. Each year, Kiwanis chair Todd Rainier works two full days lining up donations for the event, coordinating Kiwanis member participation, and setting up and breaking down the concession operation. Todd reported that in 2014, 22 Hooksett Kiwanis members volunteered a total of 81 hours to make this edition

Fred Bishop recognized for years as Club Secretary, by Judy Barrett, President Kiwanis Club of Hooksett Everyone in Kiwanis agrees that the most demanding position held by a Kiwanis Club member is that of Club Secretary. Our club has been fortunate to have had that position filled continually for 12 years by non-other than the individual who had the vision to organize the club back in the year 2000. All of us know for sure that Fred has willingly shared his vast knowledge of Kiwanis with us over many years. His wisdom and his passion for the Kiwanis mission have served us so well. For that we are grateful. Those of us who strive to follow your example so that our Kiwanis presence in Hooksett continues to provide the kinds of services Kiwanis is known for. His service as our Secretary has had a positive influence on every past president and the officers and boards who served with them over the years. As we look back over the time that Fred served as our Secretary, we cannot help highlight just a few of the things he has had a hand in making happen for our club. • Head’s Pond Trail Grant Application work • • Participation in the adoption of the Hooksett Community Food Pantry. • • Organizational guidance in formulation of the Kid’s Kloset. • Development of an award winning Club Newsletter. • • N. E District recognition as an outstanding Club Secretary. • • Doing the ground work leading to the formation of the Central Key Club and the Cawley and Hillside Builders Clubs. • • Implementation of the Community Leader’s event. • Recruiting over 50 new members

At our meeting on October 15, Fred was presented with a beautiful rocker with the Kiwanis logo crafted by Frank Kotowski. This was followed by a presentation of a card and album by the Hillside Builders Club. In accepting the gifts, Fred indicated that his greatest rewards flowed from observing service leadership members developing their leadership and speaking skills. What these groups accomplish is amazing. Fred indicated that his involvement with Key Club began while serving as a Lt. Governor in 1987, when he developed a friendship with the Key Club Lt. Governor from Pittsfield. Later while serving as District Governor, he implemented joint board training and service projects of Kiwanis and Key Club Lt. Governors. His Governor’s project involved raising $13,000 in scholarship money for a Key Club District Officer whose father died abruptly from a heart attack, leaving her family with serious financial problems. Fred later served as Kiwanis Advisor to The Derryfield, West, and Central Key Clubs, as well as, the Hillside Builders Club.

Kiwanis Club of Meriden holds its 63rd Annual Kiwanis Kapers Show Meriden, Connecticut The New London Kiwanis Club was visited by Santa and Mrs. Claus at their annual Salvation Army childrens’ Christmas party. Club members adopted a child and purchased clothing and a toy as a Christmas gift for their adopted child.

Meriden (CT) Kiwanis Club President Brian Cofrancesco presided over the Meriden AntiBullying Coalition (“ABC”) mosaic final grouting and unveiling event held on December 8th. ABC, with members from the Boys & Girls Club’s Torch Club and the Junior Leaders Club of Girls Inc., was a recipient of the Kiwanis Club of Meriden’s 2014 Kiwanis Serving Children Grant. Working together with Gallery 53 owner Chris Webster and fellow artist Diane Szymaszck, the group used the grant funds to make a glass mosaic depicting rural, urban and suburban scenes.

The Kiwanis Club of Meriden held its 63rd Annual Kiwanis Kapers Show Nov. 14-15. For this edition, the club brought the circus to town with a production entitled “Kapers Klowing Around”. The show included performances by club members and local youth groups, together with a community talent contest. Members from the F.T. Maloney High School Key Club ran a midway of games of chance as an additional fundraiser. All the money raised from the shows will go directly back into the Meriden community.

Since 1930, through annual educational scholarships, service leadership programs in the Meriden School system (K-Kids, Builders Club, Key Club and Aktion Club), monetary and hands-on support of community organizations, the Kiwanis Club of Meriden has provided valuable support to the youth, the elderly, and adults with disabilities. For 85 years, the Meriden Kiwanis Club has served the mission of Kiwanis International, “volunteers dedicated to improving the world, one child and one community at a time.”

Hardwick Kiwanis Holds Yard Sale

Celebrate with a Child and Walk with a Child

Both events involve partnering with three Key Clubs sponsored by our Club. Walk with a Child provides needy kids with winter clothes in collaboration with a local Wal-Mart. The kids are paired with Kiwanians or Key Club students and together they shop for clothes and, if the budget permits, some “extras.” Students from a local college also joined in. The Club underwrites a $100 per child stipend. 55 kids were served. Celebrate with a Child is a holiday party for needy kids who are members of the Boys and Club. Kiwanis provides gifts – for the kids and to take home for family members, a visit from Santa, craft making, a sing-a-long, story time and lunch. The Key Club students staff stations devoted to face painting, cupcake decorating, card making, and gift wrapping. 20 children attended.

Hardwick Kiwanis with the help of Bob and Connie Bellavance have been very busy since the last issue of Yankiwanian. Their biggest challenge has been working on lawn sales for Project Eliminate. Connie & Bob found out that their overflow camp had been sold and they needed to eliminate all their stuff from the camp in two weeks. Immediately they contacted the new owners and walked them through the camp. By process of elimination of their goods and helping Project Eliminate they were able to make $150.00. The very next week they found out their big house where they had all their extra storage along with all of Hardwick Kiwanis storage was now eliminated from their lives. Immediately Connie established another large yard sale right in the busy area of town. Other members also donated items and helped with this project. This yard sale netted almost another $ 800.00 for Project Eliminate. Now there was just what to do with what was still left at the house. (Bob had forgotten to bring all to the yard sale). One last attempt was made by all at the actual house. This sale was joined by Connie’s family in attempt to make it a larger sale. Unfortunately the weather did not cooperate so this one was the hardest challenge. It did however profit enough so that between the three yards sales, Connie was able to make a donation of $1,250.00 to Project Eliminate. Being so excited about this accomplishment she immediately contacted Dan Bennett. She requested a Zeller so she could present it to Bob at Hardwick’s Community Senior Holiday dinner. Their accomplishment and her devotion to Project Eliminate were celebrated by all members and community of Hardwick, VT.
