R I N T E R

S E C T I O N 2 – E VA L U AT I N G L A S E R P R I N T E R S By definition, a workgroup printer is a shared resource. Typically, a network laser printer is shared by groups of up to 25 people on a regular basis. It is also common for there to be multiple computer platforms, such as the various versions of Microsoft Windows, Mac OS, Unix, or Linux. By far the most popular network used is Ethernet, increasingly with TCP/IP protocols. Even with multiple users on a variety of platforms with their own unique applications and needs, all networked printer users require three things from their printers: ■

Speed

Quality

Flexibility

PRINT SPEED Today’s busy workgroups, whatever their size, have no time to waste. Consider raw engine speed, but also look at processor speed, first-page-out time, and the ability to process multiple jobs concurrently to give you a feel for the printer’s total throughput capability.

HOW THE PHASER 5400 REQU IREM ENT

MEETS THE

PRINT SPEED

Start with a 266 MHz G3 class processor that delivers a blazing first-page-out in just 9 seconds and then go on to print at 40 ppm print engine speed. Add input feeders to boost capacity up to 3150 sheets and productivity features like “Send once, RIP once, Print many” and “Job Pipelining” and the Phaser 5400 proves its value as a productive workgroup asset.

E

V A L U A T O R

G

U I D E

7

PRINT QUALIT Y Speed at the cost of quality is not acceptable. Consider the resolution of the printer as represented in a variety of text styles and sizes. Also consider fills, gradients, graphic elements, and photo images.

HOW THE PHASER 5400 REQU IREM ENT

MEETS THE

PRINT QUALITY

Selectable resolution from 600 x 600 dpi, to 1200 dpi image quality, to true 1200 x 1200 dpi, delivers the best combination of superb image quality and workgroup productivity to meet every application need.

FLEXIBILITY What types of documents do your users typically produce? Do they need a variety of media capabilities (e.g., pre-printed letterhead on fine bond paper, standard peer-to-peer quality laser paper, transparency media, card stock, envelopes, etc.)? Is automatic two-sided printing (duplexing) important?

HOW

THE

PHASER 5400

MEETS THE

FLEXIBI LITY REQUI REMENT

The Phaser 5400 boasts excellent reliability on all media types, handling paper weights from 16 lb bond to 110 lb cardstock (60 to 200 gsm). To improve printing quality on different stocks, the Phaser 5400 enables variable fusing temperatures. Multiple input and output options give maximum printing flexibility: The Phaser 5400 comes standard with a 500-sheet input tray, a 150-sheet multipurpose bypass feeder, and a 500-sheet output tray. Add one or two 500 sheet paper feeders (in letter or ledger sizes). Broaden your input and output capabilities further with a 2,000-sheet feeder, and 1,000-sheet stacker. For exceptionally fast two-sided printing, add an automatic duplex module (standard on DT and DX configurations). Advanced graphics features like Edge-to-Edge Printing, Booklet Printing, and the ability to print up to 11 x 17 in. page size, let you print spreadsheets and professional-looking newsletters and brochures.

SECTION 3 — PRINTER MANAGEMENT CENTREWARE DP CentreWare DP is easy-to-use printer management software for Novell networks. Through point-and-click navigation, you can install, connect, and configure the printer on a network quickly and easily. It provides network administrators with setup procedures and management of networked printers. CentreWare DP also provides Help information. Features include: ■

Setup Wizard Provides a step-by-step guide to get your printer quickly up and running on the network.

Advanced Setup Provides a tool to service multiple file servers and queues.

Instant Status Enables you to select a printer from the Printer List to see what that printer is doing at any given time.

Remote Configuration and Management Enables you to do most configuration and monitoring tasks from your workstation.

Printer Upgrades Enables you to upgrade your printer from your workstation.

CENTREWARE MMC CentreWare MMC (Microsoft Management Console) will automatically discover SNMP compliant devices and display them on your MMC desktop monitor. The discovery feature can be configured to search various subnets for Xerox printers as well as other SNMP devices. You can easily access CentreWare IS from your MMC console for further management capabilities.

CENTREWARE INTERN ET SERVICES CentreWare Internet Services provides another option for implementing advanced services for the configuration and management of your printer. Each of the features in CentreWare Internet Services can be accessed through familiar client-resident software interfaces, such as the Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer browsers. Through a Web browser, users and system administrators can monitor the status of the printer, print HTML-based documents, and access context-sensitive on-line assistance. For system administrators, CentreWare Internet Services provides a faster and more productive way to install and upgrade software on your printer and a wide range of supporting information on the Internet. Refer to the CentreWare Internet Services User Guide and on-line help for more information on the operation and use of CentreWare Internet Services.
