“EMPOWERED”

Rev. Dr. Alberto Magaña Associate Pastor [email protected]

Good Morning, Cathedral of Hope!

Rev. Todd Scoggins Associate Pastor [email protected]

oday we bring to a close a sermon series that has led us through the month of May. Both on Sunday and Wednesday we have focused on The Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the spirit that was present at the beginning of time, present with the early prophets, present with Mary and Elizabeth, present with the shepherds and wise ones, present with Jesus and the early followers, present with the disciples as they learned from Jesus, present with the apostles following the death and resurrection, present with them following the ascension of Christ, present as they gathered in the upper room–where they experienced the power of the Spirit of the day of Pentecost–and present today as we gather again as the community of Christ. The Spirit of God is present. This Holy Spirit is not something new; it is the breath of God that has connected time and space throughout the generations and connects us together, offering us new life and new birth. This Spirit is a gift that offers to us an abundance of life, that prepares us for “even greater things”. Today we are “Empowered”. Empowered, according to the dictionary, means given the authority or power to do something; made stronger and more confident. One of the roles of the Holy Spirit is to empower us and cause us to claim the authority and power to do something, making us stronger and more confident. I believe that we are an empowered people, and that each of us desires this same Spirit of Moses, Elijah, Abraham, Ruth, Mary, Elizabeth, John, Matthew and others whose names are either too numerous to mention or unknown. We claim authority over our lives, and claim our empowerment by the Spirit calling us to do something and, despite our feelings of weakness, giving us confidence and making us stronger so that we overcome the obstacles in our path. Sincerely, in Christ The Reverend Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas, Senior Pastor

WORSHIP NOTES Insight into the various elements of our services

Memorial Day Memorial Day—formerly known as Decoration Day—is observed on the last Monday of May, commemorating all men and women who have died in military service for the United States. Memorial Day started as an event to honor Union soldiers who had died during the American Civil War, inspired by the way the Southern states honored their dead. After World War I, it was extended to include all men and women who died in any war or military action. Decoration Day and then Memorial Day were formerly held on May 30, regardless of the day of the week. In 1968, the Uniform Holidays Bill was passed as part of a move to use federal holidays to create three-day weekends. Since 1971, the Memorial Day holiday has been officially observed on the last Monday in May. It is traditional to fly the flag of the United States at half mast from dawn until noon. Many people visit cemeteries and memorials, particularly to honor those who have died in military service, and volunteers place American flags FINLANDIA on the graves in national cemeteries.

LITURGY OF THE WORD EPISTLE LESSON

2 Corinthians 3: 17—4: 1, 5 & 6

Roger Poindexter

Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And all of us, with unveiled faces, seeing the glory of the Lord as though reflected in a mirror, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another; for this comes from the Lord, the Spirit. Therefore, since it is by God's mercy that we are engaged in this ministry, we do not lose heart. For we do not proclaim ourselves; we proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and ourselves as your workers for Jesus’ sake. For it is the God who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

Words and Music by Keith Getty and Stuart Townend arranged and adapted by David Moldenhauer CCLI License #123333

This Is My Song The Processional Hymn this morning is This Is My Song, also known as A Song of Peace. The first two stanzas of the hymn were written by poet Lloyd Stone (1912-1992) in the interval between the World War I and World War II. Stone’s words reflect a universal God and common human yearning for peace. The third verse is by lesbian theologian Georgia Harkness, who uses language from the Lord’s Prayer—thy kingdom come, thy will be done—as a call for unity and peace. The powerful hymn tune, FINLANDIA, is based on the tone poem, Finlandia, by Finland’s greatest composer, Jean Sibelius (1865-1957). Sibelius based much of his music on national myths and folk tales which instilled intense patriotic feelings in the Finnish people. 2

**GOSPEL LESSON John 15: 26-27 One: All: One: All:

Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church. Come, Holy Spirit. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John. Glory to you, O God.

Jesus said, “When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from God—the Spirit of truth who goes out from Abba God—she will testify about me. And you also must testify, for you have been with me from the beginning.” One: All:

This is the Gospel of Hope. Praise to you, Creator, Christ and Holy Spirit.

SERMON

The Holy Spirit: “Empowered”

Rev. Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas

Breath of the Spirit Today’s Anthem is a simple prayer asking the Holy Spirit to visit and realign the heart of the believer. The song is by three-time BMI Award winning, Dove Award nominated songwriter Rebecca Peck. Since 1991 she has seven #1 songs to her credit and several top 10 songs. Church composer Lari Goss arranged this beautiful anthem for the Pentecost season for soloist, choir, and orchestra, incorporating the well-known praise chorus Spirit of the Living God. Breath of the Spirit, flow over me. Breath of the Spirit, come and set me free, sweeping away my pride ‘til all that is left inside is a heart that is pure with strength to endureand a faith to believe.

Sometimes there is a mighty rushing wind, Spirit of the living God, fall fresh on me. The power of God that cleanses me within. Spirit of the living God, fall fresh on me, Sometimes there is a quiet gentle breeze fall fresh on me. That flows from 3 heaven, filling me with peace. 3

DISTRIBUTION OF THE ELEMENTS TO OUR GUESTS

Cathedral of Hope celebrates an open communion. We understand the sharing of the bread and the cup in Jesus’ name to be a representation of an ancient vision of God’s feast for all peoples. We don’t require you to be a member of this church, or any church, to participate with us in this feast of grace. Simply come forward at the ushers’ direction. After dipping a wafer in the cup, the minister will place it on your tongue and offer a brief blessing. If you prefer to serve yourself, cup your hands in front of you as you come to receive communion. Gluten-free Wafers are available from the silver intinction set at the center point. Please indicate your need to the ushers on the center aisle and they will direct you to the appropriate position. We ask that you serve yourself—take a wafer and dip it in the juice—in order to avoid cross-contamination by the server.

Text To Give You can now make a contribution to Cathedral of Hope with a quick text message! The miniumum text-to-give contribution is $3. Simply send a text message to 469-507-3839 with the amount you would like to contribute. Make sure to include the dollar sign before the amount. Example: $20. Within a few moments, you’ll be sent a text with a link to register. Click on the link and enter your cardholder name and credit or debit card information. Once your registration is complete, you will receive a text verification and a receipt via email. For future giving, simply send a text with the amount you wish to give, and it will process automatically! See the flyer next to the kiosk in the Narthex for more information. 4

Today in Children’s Church

The Alzheimer’s Association - Greater Dallas Chapter is dedicated to providing support and assistance to persons affected by Alzheimer’s disease and to their families and other caregivers through the Chapter’s core services. The mission of the Association is to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health and the hope of a future world without Alzheimer’s disease.

n this Memorial Day Weekend, we will be discussing the fact that Jesus talked about the Advocate coming to empower us and we will consider what the word “empowered” means to us. Jesus said that the Holy Spirit would testify on our behalf, or tell the truth about us and think about what the best truth about us might be. We will remember the women and men on the Day of Pentecost excitedly giving their testimonies to other people about Jesus’ teachings and imagine if we were to testify or say good things about Jesus to someone today, what are the best things we could say? Jesus told his disciples who traveled with him and became his best friends that since they were with him from the beginning, they would not be able to keep themselves from telling people the good news about their lives with Jesus. What kinds of stories do you think they told?

Apostle: Travels Among the Tombs of the Twelve

A

uthor Bissell journeyed to the tombs of the apostles, finding some sticky with kisses and others bone-barren. The account of his travels is a cornucopia of history, travelogue, biography, analysis, and hilarity. Bissell, a scholar but not a believer, pairs some disciples (Philip and James) and adds one not of the original twelve (Paul) in this quirky and learned tome. Each chapter covers an apostle’s life story and legend, comparisons of the apostle’s appearances throughout the Gospels and places from Italy to India where relics beckon pilgrims. Bissell includes questions, definitions, traveler’s tales, and sprightly interviews with the pilgrims, translators, and docents he meets, and these bolster his Bible commentaries; his accounts are always grounded in his meetings with scholars and church fathers. Even if readers don’t care about the apostles, Bissell’s style is compelling on its own. His unforced humor is delightful, his wealth of research grounds this formidable apostolic project, and his crafty rhetoric and irresistible charm make it a must-read.

Isai, Sofia And I, Want To Say A Special Thank You

Giving and Attendance at a Glance Service Worship

O

n behalf of my family, I would like to thank you all for making us feel so welcomed and at home here. What a difference a year can make in anyone’s life, but specifically in ours, as we celebrate one year of ministry here at Cathedral of Hope United Church of Christ, Dallas. To each and every one of you, thank you. Just a month ago we moved into our new home here in Dallas and many of you contributed to a special offering that was received as a love gift to help us buy a few extras that we might not otherwise have been able to purchase. Thank you for the extra mile. You are a blessing to us and we only hope that we are a blessing to you.

Wednesdays June 22 – July 13, IPC, 6 p.m. One of America’s most beloved and most accessible writers, Mary Oliver likes to think of herself as a “praise poet.” And indeed she is—with her attentive, respectful gaze on creatures great and small and her celebration of and gratitude for the natural world. One theme threaded through her works is prayer. In both serious and playful ways, she explores what it is, what it’s not. If you’d like to refresh your prayer life, come join with other sisters and brothers for a fourweek encounter with the sacred in Oliver’s poetry, reflecting together, using her texts in the practice of lectio divina (divine reading), and creating prayer-poems modeled on her work. Facilitator: Dr. Pat Saxon [email protected].

Greening Tip The soil around trees and shrubs needs to be kept moist during the hot summer months. Install a drip irrigation system around your trees and shrubs to water more efficiently.
