How it works

The World Marathon Majors is a series consisting of six of the largest and most renowned marathons in the world: Tokyo Marathon, Boston Marathon, Virgin Money London Marathon, BMW Berlin Marathon, Bank of America Chicago Marathon and TCS New York City Marathon. The six annual road races, along with the Olympic Marathon and IAAF World Championships Marathon, serve as the qualifying races in the series. The top five male and female finishers in each of these races are awarded points based on their placement. At the conclusion of each two-year series, a $1 million prize purse is split equally between the top male and female point earners. The $1 million prize is awarded annually, meaning that each two-year series overlaps. The inaugural series was 2006-2007, followed by 2007-2008, 2008-2009 and so on. The total score for each athlete in a series consists of points earned from a maximum of four qualifying races during that two-year cycle. To be eligible for the jackpot, an athlete must compete in a minimum of one qualifying race during each year of the series.

The two-year cycle

The two-year cycle was developed with the following in mind: • Elite marathon athletes compete at the top level in two races per year and sometimes three. Due to the wear and tear on their bodies, the athletes need to allow enough time to recover from the competition and begin the extensive training process for the next race. • The goal of the organizers was to truly crown the top marathoners in the world and in order to do that, they agreed that more than two competitions per athlete were necessary to determine who, in fact, is the greatest in the sport. • In any two-year cycle, a minimum of 12 different World Marathon Majors Qualifying Races will take place. In the years in which they are held, the Olympic Marathon and the IAAF World Championships Marathon also qualify. These eight events provide a world stage and a variety of different courses on which the athletes can compete and challenge themselves and others.

Scoring system

• • • • •

• •

Men and women compete against their own gender. The WMM Series consists of overlapping two-year periods. Currently, the 2013-2014 and 20142015 series are underway. A $1 million grand prize jackpot is awarded at the end of each scoring period, split equally between the top male and female point scorers. Besides the six World Marathon Majors, the Olympic Games and IAAF World Championships Marathon also serve as qualifying races for the WMM Series. Athletes earn points by placing among the top five at qualifying races. Points are allocated as follows: Place 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th

Points 25 15 10 5 1

In any two-year scoring period, a maximum of four qualifying races count toward an athlete’s point total. If an athlete scores points in more than four qualifying races, the athlete’s best four finishes will be scored. At least one qualifying race must be in each calendar year of a scoring period in order for an athlete to be eligible for the jackpot.

In the event of a tie, the winner shall be determined using the following tie-breaker: • The athlete with the best head-to-head record during the period (including all qualifying races in the period, not just scoring races) will be declared the winner. Only the fact that one athlete finished ahead of the other will be taken into account and not by how many places. If there is still a tie, the following tie-breakers will be used in descending order until the tie is broken: • The athlete who has achieved his or her points in the fewest races. • The athlete who won the most qualifying races during the period. • The athlete with the fastest average time in his or her scoring races. • The athlete who the majority of the race directors of the six World Marathon Majors races determines to be the champion. In such circumstances, the race directors may decide to award the title jointly.

Therefore, when an athlete earns points in a qualifying race, those points will count toward that athlete’s score in two World Marathon Majors series. Points earned in 2014 will be reflected in both the athlete’s 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 score.

If an athlete starts a race but for any reason does not complete it, he or she shall, for the purposes of tie-breakers 1 and 2 above, be treated as having taken part in the event.

World Marathon Majors

Despite the two-year format, the $1 million prize purse is awarded annually, which began with the first cash payout at the conclusion of the 2006-2007 series. This means every qualifying race held after 2006 has counted toward two World Marathon Majors series. For example, the 2012 Olympic Marathon served as a qualifying race in both the 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 World Marathon Majors series.

Tokyo Marathon

Established in 2007, the Tokyo Marathon takes nearly 36,000 participants on a tour of Tokyo’s iconic city attractions. Through its theme, “The Day We Unite,” the Tokyo Marathon unites runners, volunteers (Team Smile) and spectators on race day. Since the 2011 race, the Tokyo Marathon has been working on the Tokyo Marathon Charity Program, “Tsunagu” (which translates into “solidarity”). Donations go to respective charitable activities according to the concept of “Tsunagu.” Inaugural running 2007 Largest field 35,501 (2011) Recent participation Year Finishers Male / Female 2014 34,121 27,193 / 6,928 2013 35,251 28,101 / 7,150 2012 35,129 27,688 / 7,461 2011 35,501 26,869 / 8,632 Estimated number of spectators 1.7 million Course records Men: 2:05:42 (Dickson Chumba, KEN, 2014) Women: 2:22:23 Tirfi Tsegaye Beyene, ETH, 2014) Most victories No multiple winners Prize Purse 34,500,000 Yen (8,000,000 Yen to male/female champions) Organization information Tad Hayano, Race Director Tokyo Marathon Foundation Ariake Frontier Building B-8F, Ariake 3-7-26, Koto-ku Tokyo, Japan 135-0063 +81 (3) 5500-6677 tokyo42195.org Media contacts Ulala Nagashima +81 (3) 5500-6639 [email protected] Upcoming race date February 22, 2015 (tentative)

Inspired by their experience at the 1896 Olympic Games, several members of the Boston Athletic Association founded their own marathon in 1897. The race has been run every year since (though the 1918 edition featured a military relay rather than an individual race) and is now the world’s oldest annual marathon. Both the start and finish lines have been moved over the years, but much of the course remains exactly as it was originally designed. Since 1924 the race has begun in the town of Hopkinton, and from there the historic point-to-point course descends through Ashland, Framingham, Natick and Wellesley. Upon entering Newton, the course gradually rises to the famous Heartbreak Hill. As runners reach the top, they can see downtown Boston for the first time, four miles in the distance. After running through Brookline, the course enters Boston where it finishes on Boylston Street in front of the Boston Public Library near Copley Square. Runners qualify for entry by meeting time standards corresponding to gender and age, which is another aspect—besides its course and longevity—unique to the Boston Marathon. Virgin Money London Marathon

The first London Marathon was held on March 29, 1981 when 6,255 runners completed the race. Since then, it has grown to more than 35,000 starters and finishers, is watched on TV in more than 150 countries worldwide and has more than six million viewers annually in the UK. In 2012, a record 36,705 people finished and £52.8 million was raised for charity. The overall number of finishers from 34 races is now more than 900,000, and the total raised for charitable causes by London Marathon runners stands at over £610 million. The London Marathon Charitable Trust, created in 1981 to raise money for recreational facilities in London, has allocated grants worth more than £50 million to nearly 1,000 projects in the capital. The Trust has also helped save seven playing fields and committed a further £1 million to support community legacy facilities following the London 2012 Olympics. BMW Berlin Marathon

A group of runners from one of Germany’s most prestigious athletics clubs, SC Charlottenburg, organized the first Berlin Marathon in 1974. It was not until 1981 that the race moved from the Grunewald forest into the city center of West Berlin. Supported by the three western allied forces (Britain, France and U.S.), it quickly developed into Germany’s biggest and best quality marathon. It was after the Berlin Wall collapsed in November 1989 when a new era started. On September 30, 1990, three days before reunification, the course of the Berlin Marathon led through Brandenburg Gate and both parts of Berlin. In 2001 Naoko Takahashi became the first woman to break the 2:20 barrier in Berlin. The flat and fast loop course then was changed significantly for the 2003 race. Paul Tergat, in a world record 2:04:55, became the first man to cross the new finish line, passing through Brandenburg Gate—the symbol for reunification. In 2008, Ethiopian great Haile Gebrselassie became the first man to break 2:04 with his 2:03:59 world record performance. In 2011 Kenya’s Patrick Makau lowered the world record to 2:03:38, which, in turn, was broken again in 2013 when Wilson Kipsang ran 2:03:23. In 1976 a small group of running enthusiasts met at the Metropolitan YMCA on LaSalle Street to plan a marathon in Chicago. Backed by the athletic enthusiasm of the new Chicago Mayor, Michael Bilandic, and the leadership of Lee Flaherty, this founding group realized their vision on September 25, 1977, hosting 4,200 local participants in the first Chicago Marathon. The Bank of America Chicago Marathon has since expanded to 45,000 registered runners and an estimated 1.7 million on-course spectators. The flat and fast course begins and ends in historic Grant Park, sweeping through 29 diverse and colorful neighborhoods including Lakeview, Greektown, Little Italy, Pilsen, Chinatown and Bronzeville. The Bank of America Chicago Marathon has a long history of hosting the world’s fastest runners and has been the site of two men’s world records (Steve Jones, 2:08:05, 1984; and Khalid Khannouchi, 2:05:42, 1999) and two women’s world records (Catherine Ndereba, 2:18:47, 2001; and Paula Radcliffe, 2:17:18, 2002). Each year, the event has a growing impact on the local economy with participants arriving from all 50 states and more than 100 countries, and nonprofit fundraising with 10,000 charity runners.
