Study Highlights •

The world market for gaskets and seals is projected to increase 5.7 percent per year through 2005 (including price increases), reaching US$28.7 billion.

Gains will accelerate in Asia since many of the countries most directly affected by the 1997-1998 financial crisis -- Indonesia, Malaysia, South Korea, Thailand, etc. -- were previously among the world's fastest-growing markets and are expected to recover.

The advanced nations of North America, Western Europe and Asia/Pacific (e.g., Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore) comprise mature, highly cyclical markets for gaskets and seals.

Motor vehicles will continue to be the largest market, due to the wide range of applications involved.

Among product types, high-performance products such as mechanical face seals, rotary oil seals and nonmetallic gaskets constructed from advanced materials -- for example, carbon and aramid fibers, expanded graphite, specialty elastomers and polymers -- will have above average growth prospects.

The top four gaskets and seals producers -Freudenberg-NOK, Federal Mogul, the Smiths Group and Parker-Hannifin -- accounted for over 18 percent of total world demand in 2000.

Market Environment The Market Environment Section discusses key indicators that drive demand for gaskets and seals, including technology and motor vehicle production trends and Freedonia’s uniquely developed macroeconomic indicators.

MARKET ENVIRONMENT

Gaskets & Seals Technology

This information provides you with an understanding and an analysis of the climate in which the global gaskets and seals industry operates and helps you build your market strategy to sustain long-term growth.

Gaskets and seals are basic industrial component-type items designed to prevent fluid leakage and protect sensitive machinery parts from external contamination in a host of industrial, electrical/electronic and transportation settings SAMPLEequipment PAGE (sometimes other functions are involved as well, such as vibration dampening). As a result, basic gasket and seal designs and functions are well-established and wellunderstood. However, the business continues to be impacted by technological innovation with market-expanding potential.

Many of the most important

developments have occurred in the area of advanced materials. Gaskets and seals suppliers have intensively investigated the potential for any number of materials to perform these functions. The result has been the emergence of an array of gasket and seal products constructed wholly or in part (e.g., as fillers) from alternative materials that generally offer performance advantages over traditional materials such as commodity rubber, paper and felt, cork and the like. For example, Gasket King has developed a fiber-reinforced, pre-ceramic silicone composite head gasket. The product, which is being tested by OEMs such as Ford and General Motors, is designed to replace multi-layer steel (MLS) gaskets. The gasket can withstand much higher temperatures than previous silicone products (up to 1,820 degrees Fahrenheit versus 600), and has performance advantages vis-a-vis MLS gaskets. For example, it requires no fasteners and only one layer of material (which therefore needs only one coat of sealant). Another example of new gasketing material is LATTYFLON from Technical Sealing Products (Hampton, Virginia). LATTYFLON 3260LM consists of a plaited polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) impregnated carbon core within a jacket of PTFE impregnated and lubricated yarn. The product is designed for modulating control valves. LATTYGRAF 6940, also from Technical Sealing Products, is

WORLD SUPPLY & DEMAND

Section presents supply and demand dynamics for the global gaskets and seals market over the past ten years.

Gaskets World gaskets shipments are expected to increase 5.5 percent annually through 2005 to $12.8 billion. Gains will accelerate compared to the 1995-2000 period

ery is expected to experience growth, which in turn will boost gains for components such as gaskets. Product innovations will have both positive and negative effects on growth, since the improved pricing opportunities for higher-end products will be offset somewhat by the extended useful lives.

Propose new areas for development Nonmetallic gaskets comprise the largest gasket product group, and will experience above-average growth through 2005, due to rising demand for advanced materials such as thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs), carbon and aramid fiber, and expanded graphite. Traditional nonmetallic gaskets (such as rubber, cork and paper), as well as metallic gaskets, will experience limited gains due to competition from the newer nonmetallic materials. Seals Shipments of seals and packings are expected to increase 5.8 percent per annum through 2005 to $15.9 billion. As with gaskets, gains will benefit from rising key end-use products such as motor vehicles and industrial machinWorld Gaskets production & Seals ofDemand by Application ery. In addition, aftermarket opportunities, a result of the aging and repair of

Supply & Demand by Country & Region The Country Sections analyze supply and demand trends and consider the threats and opportunities in each country and region.

LATIN AMERICA

Argentina - Supply & Demand Argentina comprised a $90 million market for gaskets and seals in 2000, a distant second to Brazil as largest in the region. Demand grew briskly during the several

years leading up to the 1998 economic slowdown, with the conspicuous exception of 1995 when gross fixed investment contracted in the recessionary environment. Much gaskets and seals demand derives from the country’s automotive sector, which produced 335,000 vehicles in 2000 -- more than double late 1980s levels even in an adverse macroeconomic climate -- through a combination of knockdown kit assembly and complete vehicle fabrication methods. Although not growing as rapidly in recent years, the Argentine industrial machinery market is also quite sizable, as the country features agricultural, food processing, oilfield and plastics processing machinery industries of significance. Other important gasketsand seals-consuming industries include computers and peripherals; these types of higher value-added industries have been among the major beneficiaries of economic reforms attracting external capital into the country. product quality), engineering capabilities, timely delivery and price. Similar variables are important in the aftermarket segment as well, with price and timely delivery taking on somewhat relatively greater importance, as is typical with replacement components. It should be noted, however, that in both the OEM and MRO segments the relative importance of the key marketing-related considerations can vary depending upon the nature and technical sophistication of the product (as well as its intended use). Therefore, in the case of commodity items such as elastomeric gaskets or O-rings, price and delivery are the major considerations. For more technically advanced products, such as packings designed to stop fugitive emissions in the chemical industry, quality and performance join pricing as critical variables. Maintenance and service are becoming critically important in all segments where the leak-control capabilities of gaskets and seals are coveted, particularly for users (such as process manufacturers) who are subjected to clean air and other environmental regulations. As gasket and seal products have become more technically complex and diverse (in terms of designs, materials, etc.), suppliers’ marketing requirements have risen © Copyright by The Freedonia Group, Inc.
