Working with Picture Sets This file contains ideas of how you can use your SMART Board Tools and SMART Notebook Software to support teaching and learning through use of the the TC2 Picture Sets. These suggestions may be used in a variety of contexts such as whole class learning, small group learning and individual learning by using Notebook Software in a computer lab or on laptops.

When using pens on a website, the "Digital Ink Layer" appears. To save your annotations, click on "Capture writing". This saves your annotations as a screen shot in Notebook Software. When you are finished working, click on "Close Digital Ink Layer." Contents

SMART Board Tools The Floating Toolbar - Customize The Floating Toolbar is available outside Notebook Software and can be used with any application. To view your floating tools, click on the arrows on either side of your desktop screen. Customize your Floating Toolbar to gain access to additional tools.

Click on the gear to customize your toolbar.

Drag additional tools such as the Spotlight, Screen Shade, Recorder and Area Capture Tool to your Floating Toolbar. Contents

Move the spotlight by dragging the spotlight. Change the size by dragging the blue outline. Change the transparency or shape by clicking on the drop-down menu. Contents

SMART Board Tools The Floating Toolbar - Screen Shade

Make observations and draw inferences about daily life.

Use the screen shade tool to gradually reveal parts of images. Use the "handles" at the top, bottom or either side to reveal. Contents

SMART Board Tools The Floating Toolbar - Area Capture Describe the inner thoughts of the older boy in the image.

Use the Area Capture Tool (click and drag to draw a rectangle) to "crop" an image to focus the attention on one person or object. Contents

The new image is saved directly in Notebook Software.

SMART Board Tools The SMART Recorder Infer the beliefs, fears and values of an individual in the image. The SMART Recorder Tool records audio and screen movements. To record audio, you must have a microphone (built-in or external). Use the SMART Recorder Tool to record student responses.

SMART Board Tools The SMART Recorder 1. When you click on the SMART Recorder tool you will see a window like this:

Record 2. Press the red button to start recording and the stop button when you have finished recording. 3. Name and save your recording. The recording is saved as a .wmv (pc) or .mov (mac). 4. To play back the recording: Locate the file on your computer and double click on it to open it. Contents

Notebook Software Working with Images When investigating images, you may find it beneficial to insert images directly into Notebook Software. This allows you access to many tools and allows you to manipulate and move images and objects on your page to sort or rank images according to criteria. Images can be copied and pasted from the website. Additionally, image files on your computer may be inserted into Notebook Software.

Notebook Software The Notebook Toolbar

When working with images inside Notebook Software, you can use the Notebook Toolbar to enhance your learning activities. For example, you may annotate images using the pens and highlighters. Use the text tool to include additional titles or information. The line, shape or table tools may be used to create boxes or tables.

Select the shape tool and choose the rectangle. Draw a rectangle by clicking and dragging diagonally. This is the outline of your table. Select the line tool. Choose the line. Draw two lines to divide your table into thirds. Use the text tool to write the numbers 1, 2 and 3 in each box. 2. "Group" the table so it becomes one object. Click on the selector tool. Select the entire box and text by clicking outside the top left corner and dragging diagonally until all the objects are selected. Now click on a drop-down menu and choose Grouping>Group. Click and drag diagonnally.

Notebook Software How was this page created? 3. Lock your table in place so it doesn't get moved around. Select the table.

Click on the drop-down menu and choose Locking>Lock in Place.

4. Insert or copy and paste your images onto your page. Use the selector tool to move them into position. Resize them by dragging the white ball in the bottom right corner.

Resize 5. Now your page is ready for students to use. Students rank the images by using the selector tool to move them into the table.

Notebook Software My Content Store images from the Picture Sets in the My Content folder for quick and easy access. The My Content folder can be found in the Gallery Tab. The My Content folder is a folder in the Gallery where you can store images you have saved.

Select the My Content folder in your Gallery Tab. Click on the drop-down menu. Choose New Folder. Double click on the folder to name it. That folder now appears inside your My Content folder. Next

Notebook Software My Content - Notes The My Content folder is stored locally on your computer. Back up your My Content folder before doing any SMART Gallery updates. Back up your collection file by clicking on the drop-down menu > Export as Collection File. Choose a name and location to save the folder. When you want to use that collection file, double click on the file on your computer. A Notebook file opens up. Your collection file will automatically be populated into the My Content folder.
