Every work skill is transferrable Create a skills list and keyword search. ex: biotech regulatory Match your key skills/keywords to the position. Biotech hiring managers know that if job candidates have “demonstrated behaviors in the past they will do it again in the future, and their behaviors would be applicable from one industry to the other.” Ansary, a hiring professional says. “It doesn’t matter where they’ve come from as long as they’ve shown the same aptitudes they’re going to use in Biotech.”

Know Your Industry 

Marketing Yourself Volunteer work Whether in addition to a current job or an activity in between jobs, shows an employer that you are willing to try new experiences, be involved in your community and generally demonstrates a willingness to take initiative and make things happen.

Internships Paid or unpaid will put you in front of decision makers and in the midst of your chosen biotech industry. Business Cards Cards should include: Name, Address, Email, Phone, Industry, 3 –Key Skills. Never leave home without them.

Sales pitch 30-second sales pitch that tells who you are, your experience and what you are looking for.

Build Your Marketing Team Develop 100 person contact list Send email announcing your job search, what you are looking for, what you are doing. Example: Hello Contact, My name is Tom Jones, I was referred to you by a mutual associate Lisa Pickford. I have 10 years experience in Business Development; and I have begun my career search in the Biotech Industry . Lisa informed me that you could possibly be of assistance. I am currently attending Laney College’s Biotech/Biomanufacturing Certificate course that will complete in June 2010. I have attached my resume for your review for potential positions, and it can be forwarded to others whom you know to have potential positions. Please keep me informed if you do pass my resume along. Interests provide an opportunity for the prospective employer to glimpse at your character Organizations Organizations are excellent to volunteer for and can give you access to unpublished positions; as well as an opportunity to build relationships with people who are in position to assist you with obtaining your next position. Associations You may meet a prospective employer at an association meeting or function and find that you and the prospective employer share some of the same interests, which can provide further talking points at a deeper level.
