Exercise 1 - Trace and Colour In this exercise you will learn the basics of using the drawing board, technical pens and the set square. To complete the exercise you will use colouring pencils to create a presentation drawing. For this exercise you will need; • • • • •

Technical pen Set square Tracing paper ‘Trace and Colour Exercise’ drawing Colouring pencils

To begin with, the ‘Trace and Colour Exercise’ drawing will need to be taped down to the drawing board to hold it in place, with the tracing paper secured on top. Using the technical pen you are to trace the elevations (the front, side and rear of the house) and the site layout (the view from above). You can use the set square to create straight lines if you wish.

The set square can also be used to create straight lines when tracing.

Once the trace is complete the drawing can be copied onto paper, where it can be coloured using the colouring pencils to create a presentation standard drawing.

Colouring pencils can be used to make the drawing more presentable. Task complete □

Exercise 2 - Technical Trace In this exercise you will trace a technical drawing using the set square to create a precise and accurate drawing. For this exercise you will need; • • • •

Technical pen (0.1) Set square Tracing paper ‘Technical Trace’ drawing

To begin with, the ‘Technical Trace’ drawing will need to be taped down to the drawing board to hold it in place, with the tracing paper secured on top. Using the technical pen and the set square you are to carefully and accurately trace the elevation and the plans to create a new technical drawing. The notes on the drawing are also to be copied to finish off the drawing.

Task complete □

Using the 0.1 technical pen and set square can create a precise and accurate drawing.

The notes and dimensions from the drawing are extremely important and will need to be clear and concise.

Exercise 3 - Drawing Up a Survey In this exercise you will be introduced to surveying (drawing a building or place that already exists) and, using the skills you have already learnt, you will draw an accurate survey. For this exercise you will need; • • • • • •

Technical pen Technical pencil Scale ruler Set square Tracing paper Survey notes

To begin with, tracing paper will need to be taped down to the drawing board to hold it in place.

The survey notes are accurate dimensions and notes drawn upon sketches done on site.

You are to create an accurate drawing using the technical pencil, scale ruler and set square using the survey notes after they have been explained to you. To complete the task the notes should be added clearly and concisely, and the entire drawing inked using the technical pen.

The notes and dimensions from the drawing are extremely important and will need to be clear and concise. Task complete □

Exercise 4 - Designing Your Own Home In this exercise you will be designing your own home using the skills that you have developed over the past four exercises. For this exercise you will need; • • • • •

Technical pen (0.1) Technical pencil Scale ruler Set square Tracing paper

To begin with, tracing paper will need to be taped down to the drawing board to hold it in place. You are to design your own ‘dream’ home, including plans and elevations utilising the drawing board skills that you have developed so far.

It may be beneficial to do some rough sketches on paper to develop your ideas before you commit to a design.

It may be a good idea to do some rough sketches on paper to develop your ideas of how it should look from the outside, the room layouts inside, and the general scale of the building. You could get inspiration from previous work that we have done by looking at our website; www.lmparchitects.co.uk. From here you can begin to develop your design, to scale, on the drawing board using the technical pencil, set square and scale ruler. Once completed, all notes and the drawing should be inked using the technical pen.

Task complete □

You will have to draw to a specified scale so that your drawing can be presented on a sheet of paper and measured from accurately.

Exercise 5 - Using AutoCAD In this exercise you will be introduced to 2D CAD drawing using Autodesk AutoCAD. For this introduction you will be creating a CAD drawing from the drawing you created in exercise four; ‘Designing Your Own Home’. For this exercise you will need; • • • • • •

CAD station AutoCAD LT software Scale ruler Exercise 4 Completed Drawing ‘Exercise 5 Base.dwg’ File ‘Exercise 5 Example.dwg’ File

Following your introductory tuition on how to use AutoCAD, you are to develop the drawing you created in Exercise 4 into a full AutoCAD drawing. You can use the ‘Exercise 5 Example.dwg’ file to copy elements and assist you through the drawing process.

Autodesk AutoCAD is the industry standard 2D CAD software.

You can use the example to copy elements and assist you throughout your drawing. Task complete □

Exercise 6 - Using Sketchup In this exercise you will be introduced to 3D modelling. For this introduction you will be creating a 3D model from the drawing you created in exercise four and five; ‘Designing Your Own House’, using the Google Sketchup 6 software. For this exercise you will need; • • •

Sketchup station Google Sketchup 6 software Completed ‘Exercise 5 Base.dwg’ File

Following your exercise on learning AutoCAD, you will be given introductory tuition on 3D modelling using Google Sketchup which is predominantly used in the conceptual and planning stage of architectural design. Following your tuition, you can begin to develop an accurate external model of your own designed home that you created in exercise 4 and 5.

Google Sketchup is used in the concept and planning stage of the design process.

3D models enable the architects and clients to visualise their buildings during the design stage. Task complete □
