Although we can now officially put winter behind us, our staff and services continue to face pressure and demand, particularly following the recent Easter break and May Bank Holiday. I would like to thank all our staff for your hard work and commitment at these particularly busy periods and would like to assure you that we have put in place extra support to help manage demand ahead of the Whit weekend. It has also been a busy and perhaps unsettling time for many of our corporate teams who are going through different Management of Change procesess currently. Thank you for you patience and involvement which is helping to put in place the right structures to support the care and services we provide. Over recent weeks several Intermediate Care and Integrated Local Care Teams have begun to test out our new Workforce Toolkit, with twenty AHP teams also going through that process this week. Key themes from initial feedback received have reflected that while helpful; may not have captured all the activities of our teams which I would endorse as a fair view. Therefore over the coming weeks our workforce leads, Professional Leads and Community Practice Educators will be holding meetings with all 32 teams to go through the detail and ensure this is accurately reflected. Our Cost Improvement Programme remains a key a priority and we continue to encourage frontline staff to come forward with your ideas about how we can work in a more efficient way. Thank you to everyone who has already put forward suggestions and I do want to acknowledge your feedback that staff feel their ideas are not being implemented or kept informed about progress.

Chief Executive Stuart Poynor and I are very keen to ensure that we implement ideas from our staff you are our local experts with valuable knowledge and expertise to make a genuine impact. Therefore this week Stuart will be writing to all of our Neighbourhood Managers and Associate Directors re-enforcing this message and asking them to ensure your input is picked up and taken forward. I want to reassure staff that we are listening to your views and we will work harder to make that happen. Work is continuing with our local commissioners and voluntary sector partners in Stafford and Cannock Chase to develop a joined up response to the changes that the Mid Staffs NHS Foundation Trust will introduce. These discussions are at very early stage and we are committed to working proactively together to develop a positive more flexible response that the traditional commissioner/provider approach. New Appointments to Medical Directorate Partnership Trust Medical Director Doug Wulff has confirmed the appointment to two key roles within the Medical Directorate. •

Get Ready for Work Out at Work Day The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP)’s Workout at Work Day will be running again this year on Friday 6 June. Workout at Work Day (#workoutatwork) is an annual awareness day which aims to encourage people to develop healthier work habits and to highlight the benefits to employers of having healthier and more active staff. Take Action on Elder Abuse

Each year in June people throughout the UK come together to send out a clear message that abuse of older people will not be tolerated. Action on Elder Abuse campaign to bring and end to assault, neglect, abuse and intimidation of our older generations. The Partnership Trust is supporting World Elder Abuse Day on 15 June and is asking staff across the organisation to show their support. Community Services Reaching Even More Local People Latest from the Partnership Trust reveal that almost two million patients came into contact with Staffordshire’s community NHS services during 2013 and 2014. During 2013 and 2014 we made 1.9 million contacts with the local community, offering a wide range of services from district nursing, community hospital care, adult social care, school nursing, dental care, prison healthcare, health visiting and many more. “During the past year health and social care staff within the Trust have made contact with an astonishing amount of local people who are benefiting from care closer to their own homes,” Stuart Poynor, Chief Executive said. “Our year end figures reflect the importance of community services to local people who value access to an extensive variety of services, which can treat complex and long term conditions. We will continue to improve and, where possible, extend community health and social care services in the coming year,” he added. Of the 1.1 million population which the Partnership Trust serves, 77,000 people attended the Trust’s walk-in centre and minor injuries units during 2013 to 2014.

As an integrated health and adult social care provider, the Trust dealt with the social care needs of 26,300 people and provided reablement care, which helps to get people back on their feet after poor health, to 4,300 people in Staffordshire. The Trust also welcomed 4,491 inpatients to its five community hospitals based in North Staffordshire receiving specialist care such as rehabilitation treatment and palliative care. A staffing establishment acuity review to recruit more nurses in community hospitals was approved by the Trust’s board of directors during April’s board meeting. The review will help to ensure that the Trust provides staff that have the right skills for patients needs across its community hospitals. A process to recruit more nursing staff is currently underway with a special Nursing Recruitment Open Day being held at the Haywood Hosptial this Saturday (17 May) from 9.30am - 4.30pm. NHS Equality, Diversity and Human Rights Week 12-16 May 2014

As a Trust that serves a very multi cultural population (with more than 30 different nationalities catered for by Cobridge Health Centre in Stoke-on-Trent alone), the Partenrship is proud to celebrate NHS Equality, Diversity and Human Rights Week. The Trust has a number of active Personal, Fair and Diverse (PFD) Champions and many, including Chief Executive Stuart Poynor, are signed up to promotethese values through the services we provide. • Reach Out And Fitness sessions for Asian Women. This project is funded by Staffordshire Police and aims to help mothers who are rarely allowed to leave their home. Joint working between all partnership agencies is key to maximising success for all individuals, groups, and communities we work with. Stuart Poynor, Chief Executive said: “I know there has been some brilliant work within the Trust and with partners during the 12 months and this week is a great opportunity to celebrate success and raise awareness to create a more inclusive, fair and diverse place to work.” Is that discrimination? Afternoon Tea Party Focuses on Nutrition and Hydration Patients, staff and visitors enjoyed a vintage themed tea party last Friday afternoon at Cheadle Hospital to highlight the importance of good nutrition and hydration to support recovery and care. With the ward adorned in bunting along with floral cake stands and the best china, cup cakes and Victoria sponges baked by some of the nursing staff were enjoyed by the patients of Ward 1 and their visitors. Staff were there to chat to visitors about the dietary and hydration needs of patients whilst in hospital and offering advise for carers about supplements. There was also the opportunity for the visitors to sample any of the supplement drinks and puddings available.

Matron Lyn Charlton, deputy site facilities manager Amanda Perry and Chief Operations Officer (Specialist Services – hospitals) Sandra Daniels, enjoyed the informal atmosphere which was complimented by a local lady whose mother had recently been a patient on Ward 1 singing songs from the great theatre shows such as ‘Les Miserables’ . Sister Liz Gouldsmith said; “It was a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon also enabling staff to take time out of their busy day to spend some quality time with the visitors and the patients they care for.”

Extra Advice on Hand During Mental Health Awareness Week The theme of this year’s awareness campaign Anxiety, one of the leading causes of mental ill health in the world. To support patients in the self-management of their health, a display stand of useful information, situated in the outpatient area of the Haywood Hospital, has been available for patients, relatives and carers throughout the week. Seen in the photograph are Caroline Oakley, Musculoskeletal Extended Scope Practitioner and Jenny McIntyre, Physiotherapy Assistant, who are helping to promote the event.

Celebrating National Nurses Day 2014

On Monday the Partnership Trust marked National Nurses Day across the organisation. Two members of Partnership Trust nursing staff were made Queen’s Nurses at a special presentation event. District nurse Cheryl Smth (above left) and Professional Lead for community nursing Alison Rushworth are both pictured above having been presented with their awards from Chief Nurse Jane Cummings. Congratualtions to both Alison and Jane who set a great example and are wonderful ambassadors for our services. Also on National Nurses Day, Director of Nursing and Quality Siobhan Heafield and lead anxiety nurse at HMP Stafford and former Nursing Standard Nurse of The Year Johanne Tomlinson (pictured right with Lord Willis, Chair of the Association of Medical Research Charities) , were invited to the Houses of Parliament for special reception hosted by the Royal College of Nursing. The event was an opportunity to come together and celebrate the excellent care and service provided by nurses across NHS services.

HMP Featherstone’s prison healthcare team have been thanked in a letter from service user.

Thank You Social worker Linda Leese who works on the Stafford 3 adults team at Codsall has received a kind thank you card for the care and support of her and the team.

“These two women are shining examples of what the health care is supposed to be about. “They communicate well and really care about people and are very, very nice people with positive attitudes and great people skills.”

The Stafford Occupational Therapy Team has been thanked by a recent patient for their work to make adaptions to the gentleman’s home. “I am writing to thank you for your support and recommendation for a downstairs toilet to be installed. Not having to climb our steep stairs to get to the existing toilet - often not getting there in time - is invaluable. “The way the whole work was carried out from start to finish was first class and both my wife and myself are extremely grateful.”

Occupational Therapist Ruth Elkin has been praised in a very warm message submitted via the Trust website by a Tamworth patient. “I am writing to say what wonderful people you have working for you. I am 63 and not only have I had cancer my health is now chronic, but I will be around for many years to come. My wife is also disabled and my carer. She has a number of ailments of a mobility nature and has bad rheumatism/arthritis. “Some time back we were advised to contact your service to have a stair lift and a bathroom/shower room fitted. From day one of meeting Ruth she has been absolutely wonderful as is are colleagues in their office. “I have never in my 63 years come across so dedicated people. If it was a phone call or a face to face visit every one of your staff I met or spoke to were so pleasant, helpful and most of all understanding. I cannot thank them enough.”
