About Woodley United FC Woodley is a thriving town with a population approaching 40,000, a number that is set to increase with current and future housing development projects. When looking at the number of people living within three miles of the centre of Woodley, including Earley and Lower Earley, Winnersh, Twyford, Wargrave and Sonning, this population increases to over 100,000 people. Football is part of the DNA of the community. Woodley as a town had six main football clubs with approximately 80 teams in total and over 1,000 players. When coaches, managers and parents are included, over 3,500 people are involved in football within our community. Woodley United FC was orginally founded in 2011 to provide for ladies and girls football in Woodley. The club was founded as a joint venture by four existing football clubs Woodley Town, Woodley Hammers, Woodley Wanderers and Woodley Saints. In 2014 a Steering Committee led by local businessman Dave Pickup was established to explore the merits of integrating football in Woodley with a simple purpose to “Offer everyone in our Community the opportunity to play, develop and grow through football, regardless of race, gender, age or ability” and in so doing provide “Community based football that is the envy of the footballing world”. Woodley Zebras FC teams integrated with Woodley Town FC for season 2014 – 15 and in early 2015, Woodley United, Woodley Town and Woodley Hammers Football Clubs voted to dissolve and reform for season 2015 - 16 as Woodley United FC. The club is active providing football in schools and supporting the inter schools Woodley Carnival event. The community based approach being taken by Woodley United FC is seen by The Football Association as a blue print for organising community football and as such they are investing and using Woodley United FC as case study for the entire country.
