Leadership in records and IM - What it takes to step into an executive role

In the age of information that we live in, a leader who understands how to use and manage this data efficiently is an asset to any business. With a further under representation of females in those roles, emerging and aspiring leaders need to develop skills to highlight their innate ability to lead. Setting personal and professional priorities as a leader

The term work/life balance is quickly becoming an overused and dated concept. As technology advancements allow us to have real-time information access - making working from home an increasingly common practice - work and life have become integrated. This makes balancing priorities crucial, especially for women working in the technology-driven records and IM sector. This panel of experienced leaders will explore: • Establishing your personal and professional goals and prioritising accordingly • Managing work/life integration • Embracing technology but knowing when to switch off

Pamela Gonzalez Assistant Director, Physical and Warehouse Information Services Department of Industry, Innovation and Science Juliette Cox Manager, Information Strategy, Policy and Governance Department of Education and Training VIC Robyne Evans Group Head of Knowledge Management Goodman

One of the biggest challenges that comes with career progression is making peace with failure and taking risks. In the niche records and IM space, this is even more challenging as leadership progression is not always linear. As a result, aspiring leaders must be prepared to take risks and put themselves forward for any opportunity. Angela

Changing gear to meet customer expectations Exploring Yarra Valley Water’s digital journey

Th ere has been a fundamental shift in the technology world this decade, which is being described as a shift to “digital”. Many commentators are saying that “digital” is actually the next era after the industrial age, and that we are right at the beginning of that change. This session will explore what is changing, what these changes will mean for any organisation, and how leaders will need to adapt for success in a new era. Reflecting on Yarra Valley Water’s digital journey, Leigh will explore: • Comparing IT strategy and digital strategy • Planning for the uncertain and unpredictable future of technology • Managing culture in the digital world

ABOUT THE EVENT Information focused roles such as records management, knowledge and data analytics, are a key pillar in any organisation. However, when it comes to leadership, experts in this space are often not recognised for the executive level. As a result, aspiring and emerging IM leaders must refine their leadership skill set, leverage opportunities and develop strategies to position themselves for promotion. More often than not, female leaders are even more underrepresented in senior leadership roles and consequently face a number of distinctive challenges as they ascend the career ladder. With unconscious and conscious bias still a dominating factor in the recruitment process, progression for female leaders relies on the ability to highlight technical knowledge, influence senior management and remain resilient under pressure. The development of these skills will allow a leader to deal with challenges of the growth of electronic information and continue to lead seamless transformation following the Digital Transition Policy of 2015. The Women in Records and Information Management Leadership Summit 2016 is the premier platform for aspiring and emerging female leaders in IM to develop these skills. Over the course of this exceptional two day summit, participants will continue to build on their authentic leadership skill set and learn from the experiences and reflections of high achieving IM leaders to turn hindsight into insight. This is the opportunity for female leaders to step up and construct a firm understanding of their career goals and priorities, whilst developing a combination of high-level leadership skills to implement on their return to the office.
