Introduction While each of the books of the New Testament in some manner represents Jesus Christ as the true God, this truth is the primary emphasis of the Book of Hebrews. Directed at the unbelieving and the converted Jew, Hebrews shows the superiority of Jesus Christ over Moses, the revered deliverer through whom “the Law” was brought, and explains that the sufferings and death of Christ serve as the ultimate and perfect sacrifice for sin. Adherence to “the Law” and the ritual of blood sacrifices are no longer a means to salvation. In Jesus Christ the “New Covenant”, spoken by God through the prophet Jeremiah (Jer. 31:31-34), has been realized and is ‘much more excellent’ than the old covenant with Moses. From the richness of the writings in Hebrews, converted Jews in the early church were able to draw knowledge of the Gospel and the Christian faith, and become more firmly established in the faith. The same applies for believers today. Hebrews 1 1. Before Christ, “in the past”, how did God speak to His people? (1:1) a. ____________________________________________________________ 2. Hebrews 6 20. “We have this hope as an _______________ for the _______________, firm and secure.” (6:19) Reflection/Discussion: God’s Word advises us to fix our thoughts on Christ. Jesus in his own words calls us to abide in him and he will abide in us. These exhortations are intended to impel us to act on and serve as strong encouragement in our relationship with Jesus. The verb tense of the terms “fix” and “abide” indicates an ongoing, continual state of action. We are to keep are our thoughts fixed on Christ, continually, in the good times, the bad times, and the in-between times. We are to abide or remain or continue in Him on an on-going basis through all of life’s circumstances. Considering this, if one were to follow these exhortations how would that impact one’s life? Help when being tempted? Provide strength when facing peer pressure to participate in or go along with inappropriate behavior? Brothers, together let us fix our thoughts and eyes on Him, let us abide in Him, and let us continue to encourage one another to do so for he is our eternal hope, an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. i. ____________________ b. God has said, “I will never leave you, unless you forsake me.” i. ____________________ c. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and tomorrow. i. ____________________ Reflection/Discussion: Spend a few moments in prayer thanking God for His gift of salvation through His Son Jesus Christ. Because of his atoning death our sins have been taken away and we have been restored unto a relationship with God - the all-powerful, all-knowing, all-loving, ever-present, everlasting, ever-faithful, and ever-merciful God of the universe. This is amazing! An abiding relationship with God; and, we have His laws put in our minds and written, inscribed on our hearts. Wow!! When we spend time in deep reflection and meditation on this, it can be awe-inspiring, encouraging and refreshing. Yet, day by day we lack in zeal in our relationship with Him. Why? Nothing about God has changed or changes. He is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Have you finished reading the Book? Yes _____ No _____ If you have not finished reading the book by what date will you finish reading the book? ______________
