…hope happens here OUTCOMES AND ACTIVITIES 2012

Dear Friends, It happens here.

Domestic violence and sexual assault occur right here in Washtenaw County, on a daily basis. And we at SafeHouse Center are proud to be here to serve over 5,000 survivors each year. We hear hard stories every day—the stories of those who have survived an assault, and the stories of those in danger of being hurt or killed by their partner. It all happens here. But thanks to our donors, other things happen here as well. Good things. Because of you—our community, business and volunteer partners—support and healing happen here. Hope happens here. Empowerment happens here. The sound of children’s laughter happens here.

hope happens here

Thank you. With your continued support, we will keep working to build a community free of domestic violence and sexual assault. And, together, we look forward to the day when domestic violence and sexual assault don’t happen here any longer. Sincerely,

Executive Director 734-973-0242 ext. 203 [email protected]

OUR BUSINESS & COMMUNITY PARTNERS Ann Arbor Quilt Guild: Moving into a shelter—even one as comfortable and welcoming as ours—can be a scary, lonely and overwhelming experience. It helps a lot that, when our survivors walk into their room, they are greeted by a beautiful handmade quilt on each bed: a silent message from the members of the Ann Arbor Quilt Guild that everyone has the right to be safe and cared for. Each year, the Guild donates hundreds of quilts and also hosts a fundraiser to support the programs and services of SafeHouse Center. arborMotion, a SafeHouse Center community partner for five years, is the sponsor of the “Change Your Oil, Change A Life” campaign. For a minimum $35 contribution to SafeHouse Center, customers receive a free oil change, a 27-point vehicle inspection and a hand car wash. To date, this unique fundraising initiative has raised $30,000 for SafeHouse Center and the survivors we serve. It has also raised community awareness about sexual assault and domestic violence. Please visit arbormotion.com/change

The life-changing, live-saving work of SafeHouse Center is made possible in large part by partners who support our programs, our services and the survivors who turn to us for help. Here we highlight just a few of the many organizations that have provided vital financial support and in-kind services over the past year.

“Within the last 5 years, we have changed a lot of oil and SafeHouse Center has helped to change a lot of lives. We look forward to many more years of this life-changing partnership—helping to heal and give hope to those affected by domestic violence and sexual assault in Washtenaw County.” -James Snider, President, arborMotion

partnership happens

Zingerman’s Community of Businesses is a generous supporter of many organizations in our community, and SafeHouse Center is grateful to be among them. Over the past 20 years, Zingerman’s contributions have taken the form of donated food, space, professional training and financial support—all of which have made a significant difference in our ability to serve survivors of sexual violence and domestic abuse. “At Zingerman’s we believe that you must earn your right to conduct business in a community by being a good corporate citizen. For us this means taking significant action in the public sector that contributes to the social vitality of that community. We are proud of our partnership with SafeHouse Center. We nourish peoples’ bodies by making and selling great food. SafeHouse Center nourishes peoples’ souls by providing a safe, supportive, loving environment and the promise of a better world. A world free from domestic violence and sexual assault.” –Paul Saginaw, Co-Founder, Zingerman’s

19,000 hours of service in 2012

We could not provide the comprehensive services we offer to survivors without dedicated volunteers. In 2012, the volunteers who helped staff our Response Teams, Shelter, HelpLine, Children’s Program, Community Friends, Receptionist Desk and Teen Voice Program provided over 19,000 hours of service. Here we offer a sampling of comments from SafeHouse Center volunteers. And we offer heartfelt thanks to each and every one of the more than 150 people who contributed their time, dedication and skill in 2012.

our volunteers are here

“Being on the Response Team made me feel like a super hero. Whenever the pager went off, I knew I was about to help someone who needed me. And there’s no better feeling than that.”

“Becoming a Children & Youth (C&Y) volunteer has been the most rewarding and educational experience of my life. Here, kids of all ages can engage with a wide variety of toys and activities while moms enjoy time to themselves. During playroom, volunteers play with kids and model positive and appropriate behavior in a diplomatic, patient and consistent manner. At the end of playroom, I get to tell moms how much fun their kids had and what they achieved—things like learning how to climb up or down stairs or using their imagination to play ‘pretend.’ I go home with a feeling of satisfying exhaustion. I’m glad I became a C&Y volunteer and only wish I had become one sooner.”

“I enjoy being part of a team that provides counseling and support to people who have such desperate needs. SafeHouse Center delivers so much help for so many people.” “Admittedly, volunteering does start out in some small way as a selfish act. For me, it started with a compelling need to help my community and to help battered and assaulted women. But the importance of defining each and every woman I met as a survivor became clear when I began to realize that these women were helping me, empowering me to navigate my own life. I have such gratitude towards them for allowing me the privilege of interacting in their lives at a most fragile time and for trusting me, a stranger, with intimate details. I have met the most amazing survivors in my two+ years of working with the Domestic Violence Response Team and various support groups at SafeHouse Center!”

“Working as a receptionist, I’m often the first person who meets survivors coming here for their first time for help. Because of the size of the staff, I am able to assure them that an advocate will meet with them within a very few minutes.”

“As an adult survivor of child abuse and witness to my mother’s domestic abuse, I know from experience that it doesn’t take grand gestures and massive effort to make a difference in a survivor’s life. It can be little things that make a big difference-things like listening, caring and offering words of encouragement. It made a difference in my life and that’s why I support SafeHouse Center, so that I can make a difference in the life of someone who is going through what I experienced.”

Are you interested in Volunteering at SafeHouse Center? We have a long history of providing exemplary services to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, and we’re known for being in the forefront of efforts to create a violence-free society. We invite you to join us in this work and help us change the numbers. If you would like to work directly with survivors and their children, SafeHouse Center has three programs available for volunteers. All of them involve crisis intervention, which includes (1) providing emotional support and advocacy, (2) engaging in safety planning and (3) sharing information about domestic violence and sexual assault. Our next 40-hour training program will be held September 20, 21, 22, and October 4, 5, 6, 2013. Please contact Carly Corpolongo-Davis for more information at 734-973-0242 ext. 252 or at [email protected].
