Term 1 2013 Issue 1

From The Principal Dear Parents, Friends and Students, A very warm welcome to all in our Marist community to the 2013 academic year. I trust that each of our families had the opportunity to share the joy of the Christmas season peacefully and are reinvigorated for a productive 2013. It is always so very exciting to start a new year as we contemplate and prepare for the many opportunities available for our boys to support their growth and development in all areas of their lives. We commenced our year in a most positive way at our Welcome Assembly last Wednesday where we welcomed our Year 7 students (the HSC class of 2018). We were delighted to see such a strong representation of our new parents join us. The opportunity to welcome our new students and their parents into our school was a highlight of the day and a wonderful start to the new school year. As you are aware Pagewood is a member of the Archdiocesan System of Schools overseen by the Catholic Education Office. Dr. Dan White is the Executive Director of Schools. We are also a member of Marist Schools Australia, having been founded by the Marist Brothers in 1961. Brother Michael Green is the National Director of Marist Schools Australia. I am happy to report that the College building program is progressing extremely well with the completion date of August well on track. With this thought in mind we have developed the College theme for 2013 as:

The boys will be continually challenged this year to take full responsibility for the construction of their own future. We will rely on this theme to reinforce the importance placed on the choices they make to provide themselves with a bright post-school outlook. The Annunciation story in St Luke’s Gospel will also provide inspiration for us. Here, when Mary questions the angel on how can it be that I am with child, the response was straight to the point:

With God, nothing is impossible The students will be challenged not to give up, to understand that everything is possible with a loving God supporting us. 2013 will be a great year for all of us. CLASS OF 2012: I would like to take this opportunity to both congratulate and offer my best wishes to the HSC class of 2012. I thank these young men for their contribution to the College over the past six years and pray that God keeps them in the palm of His hand as they enter the next phase of their lives. It is was gratifying to hear that so many of the boys have secured the opportunities in either tertiary study or the workforce that they had hoped to achieve. We will recognize our high achievers at our 2013 Opening Mass on 20th February.

Building My Future With my very best wishes,

Mr David McInnes College Principal

Mathematics: These courses are based on mathematical ability and are blocked together with specific pathways. Science/English: These two subjects are linked together with 60% of students streamed and the remaining 40% placed in blended ability. If you have any questions or concerns about your son’s learning pathway, please contact me at the College. Mr Martin Shipley, Curriculum Coordinator

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS Beginnings I was very impressed with the community spirit displayed on our first day back as the College community welcomed our new Year 7 students. We prayed about the importance of students, parents and teachers working together in our common goal of Catholic Education. Early on Sunday morning it was seen at its best when some parents were kind enough to drop their Year 11 sons to school at 6:30am so that they could work with some teachers in helping the poor at the Matt Talbot hostel at Kings Cross. What is just as important is to ask your sons about their work at school. Make sure that they see that you value their education! Lent Next Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent. Lent is a time of fasting. It is not uncommon for the Tuesday before to be a day of feasting. Indeed the word “carnival” means good bye (vale) to meat (carne) and mardi gras translates to Fat Tuesday. During Lent we will raise money for Caritas through the Project Compassion Appeal. Our community will gather in The Hermitage next Wednesday so that all students can receive their ashes.

Please check the Careers page via the College website. There are lots of opportunities coming up!

SPORT (continued from Page 6) Year 7 Swimming Trials Congratulations to all our Year 7 students who participated in their Swimming trials last week at the Des Renford Aquatic Centre. With the mid-week start to the schooling year the boys were given only a days’ notice, and it was tremendous to see the boys involving themselves in as many events as possible. This is an important event as it allows us to evaluate the swimming abilities of the boys as well as classify them for the College carnival next week. A big thank you to the staff who assisted and well done again to the boys on their good behaviour and ability to follow directions. Internal and Free Choice Sport Those boys not involved in MCC competition will resume their internal and free choice programs for Term 1 from this

Thursday. While all of Year 7 will remain together as a group and participate in games at Heffron Park. Years 8 and 9 will continue with their summer sport program from Term 4. Years 10-12 will have the opportunity this week to select their free-choice sport for this term. Uniform and Behaviour Boys are reminded to wear the correct sports uniform to school on Thursdays. Uniform checks will continue to be carried out at assembly on Thursday mornings and any boy not complying with the school sports uniform policy will be spoken to. Students are also reminded that inappropriate behaviour at Sport not in keeping with the Colleges’ policy will result in a Sport detention to be served after Sport on a Thursday. PHOTOGRAPHS

Building My Future Year 12 study evenings will begin from Wednesday, Week 3 with the library open every Wednesday evening between 6 – 8pm for Year 12 students only. These sessions are designed to give our Year 12 Students’ a quiet, yet collaboratively place to study or undertake subject specific tutorial sessions with their teachers. A BBQ will be available from 5:45pm to fuel their brains for the two hour study session.

In many of our publications this year, such as the newsletter, we will include photos of the students in the many activities they undertake. Parents are asked to contact the College Office if they DO NOT want images of their son published in documents.

Parents should visit the College website for up to date information, particularly events and excursions. Also a reminder to parents who wish to apply for leave for their son to go to: http:// www.maristpagewood.catholic.edu.au/ POLICIES/ Student_application_for_leave.pdf to fill out the appropriate form and return to the school in advance of the required leave.

UNIFORM NEWS FROM LOWES Lowes have temporarily relocated to lower level of Eastgardens (near Myer). Reminder to parents that blazers will be discounted if purchased before Sunday 17th February.

NEWSLETTER The College newsletter is published fortnightly on Wednesdays. It will appear on the College website and will be emailed to those parents who have supplied email addresses. A big welcome back to all involved in the sporting life at Marist College Pagewood. It promises to be an exciting time for the College in 2013 as we look forward to building on the successes of last year. Students will be given every opportunity to contribute to the Colleges’ sporting profile, and are encouraged to have a go at as many activities as possible as who knows how much talent is out there yet to be discovered! MCC Sport Update Players and coaches are reminded that MCC competition resumes this week. While our Touch, Basketball and

Under 16 Cricket teams will be playing their final round games against Ashfield, our Squash and Under 14 Cricket teams will be playing their semi-finals. Signing off on 2012 there were a number of teams walking the semi-final tightrope with their fates to be decided in this weeks’ games. As a result it is very important that players attend training and give their all in this final competition game. We wish them the best of luck. Times and venues for teams who make it through to the semi-finals will be placed up on the website as soon as they are known, and a reminder that current ladders can be viewed here too. Fixtures for games against Ashfield are as follows.

College Swimming Carnival A final reminder that the College Swimming Carnival will take place this Friday 8th February at the Des Renford Aquatic Centre, Maroubra. A letter outlining the main details of the Carnival was distributed to the boys during homeroom on Monday. Students are asked to be at the pool for roll call by 8.15am, and will be dismissed no later than 1.30pm from the venue. Year 7 students will have the opportunity to catch the bus to the pool, leaving school at 8.00am and returning at the conclusion of the Carnival. House shirts are to be worn, and parents are more than welcome to attend. Following the Carnival a swim team will be chosen to train for, and ultimately compete in, the MCC Swimming Carnival which this year takes place on Thursday 21st March at Homebush. It is imperative that all boys selected for this team, unless I am otherwise notified, attend trainings on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings at Heffron Pool from 7.00am to 8.00am. Breakfast will be provided back at school.

REMEMBER Sunscreen and Water!
