BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Kenneth W. Winters (b. June 27, 1934) was president of Campbellsville University from 1988-1996. A native of Crittenden County, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree at Murray State University in 1957, a Master’s from Indiana University in 1964, and in 1970, a doctorate in Higher Education Administration and Technology Education from the University of Northern Colorado. Winters bridged a transitional period of Campbellsville College’s history. It was during his presidency that the college changed its name to Campbellsville University. The transition began with the relocation of the Carver School of Social Work program to Campbellsville from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY. The campus was also transformed by an extensive capital improvements program, which included the building of the Student Activity Center, Winters Dining Hall, a new president’s residence, a carillon clock tower and courtyard, and two student residence halls and the renovation of Carter Hall and the Gosser Fine Arts Center. During his career he has worked as a construction planner, estimator, purchasing/sales agent, and legislator. Winters completed twelve years of military service in the U.S Army and U.S Army Reserve. He has served on many professional organizations including, Council of Independent Kentucky Colleges and Universities (1992-1993), National Association of Industrial Technology (1976-1981), Kentucky Industrial Education Association (1968-1976). He’s a member of the National Rifle
Association, Experimental Aircraft Association, Council on Postsecondary Education, and Editorial Board of Technology Today magazine. He served as a Republican member of Kentucky Senate from Senate District One, between 2005 and 2013. He resides in Murray, KY with his wife, Shirley. They have one daughter, Lisa Ray. The collection consists of material relating to Campbellsville University collected by former president Kenneth Winters. It contains records of buildings, letters, contracts, blue prints, minutes, membership lists, organization correspondence, budget reports, financial plans, surveys, presidential medallion, photographs, and fundraisers.

Series 1
Accreditation, 1971-1998 Boxes 1-3, 15 Materials in this series relate to several accreditations of the college and its academic programs. Investigations by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) for accrediting Campbellsville College and then Campbellsville University were conducted during Dr. Winters’ administration. The academic accreditations relate to the Social Work Program, Education Program, a degree program, and the Music Program. The Social Work Program contains a book on the commission on accreditation process and manual. The SACS contains Institutional profiles, college self-studies, Reaffirmation Committee Report, Respond to the Board of Examiner’s Report, Tropical Rain Forests Literature Unit, and letters. Education contains a Proposal for Developing a Master’s Degree, and Assessment of the Master’s Program, a Self-Study of Teacher Education Programs, Teacher Education Handbook, and Prison Education. The Self-Studies contains Department Office, Business & Economics, Christian Studies, Fine Arts, Humanities, and Social Science. Board of Advisors, 1991-1999 Boxes 4-5 The Board of Advisors (now the Board of Advancement) promoted Campbellsville College and then University through fund raising events and sponsoring recognition awards, such as the Tenured Faculty Award. Records in this series include minutes, agendas, schedules, membership lists, bylaws, functions, nomination for membership forms, and reports of the president

Board of Trustees, 1969-1998 Box 5-7 This series contains material related to president’s relation to the governing body of the school. They are responsible for the final decisions dealing with major policy issues, hiring and firing chief personnel, such as the president. These records include minutes, agendas, schedules, membership lists, reports of the president, letters, and manual.

Buildings, 1969-1998 Box 5-8, 17-19 During the Winters administration, many buildings were constructed or renovated. The Student Activity Center (renovation of the old gymnasium), Winters Dining Hall, a new president’s residence, a carillon clock tower and courtyard, and two student residence halls were constructed and Carter Hall and the Gosser Fine Arts Center were renovated. Records in this series include floor plans, cost estimates, project schedules, bidding procedures, construction specifications and contracts, letters, company receipts, invoices, pledges and donations, committee minutes, and project manuals.

Carver School of Social Work, 1989-1997 Boxes 9, 20 This series contains information relating to the Carver School of Social Work Program. Dr. Winters negotiated the transfer of the school here from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, KY. The material includes a student handbook, mission and goals, newspapers, eligibility and evaluative criteria, transition agreement and Bill of Sale, Carver School Library holdings, Library shelf listings, enrollment, alumni list, and a Master’s degree guidelines.

Faculty, 1991-1994 Boxes 9-10 This series contains material related to the president’s relation with the faculty. This includes a fact book, Professional Development Committee minutes, Teacher Education Committee minutes, Faculty Forums, directories, course loads, and a draft of the faculty handbook.

Financial Development, 1960-1998 Boxes 10-12 This series contains material that relates to financial development and business affairs. Dr. Winters played an active role fundraising projects and other financial matters. This includes proposals for substantive change documents, internal organization charts, investment policies, survey reports, Vision 2000 booklets, letters, recommendations, scholarships, financial statements, strategic planning documents, and fund raising

Artifacts, 1997 Boxes 21-22 Objects in this series belonged to Dr. Winters. This includes a Character Counts Award and Dr. Kenneth Winter’s Presidential Medallion.
