Visiting Us

The Berkeley Marina is one of the largest and oldest yacht harbors in the East Bay. Originally constructed in 1935, the Marina encloses 52 acres of water and has 975 berths that accommodate crafts from 16’ to 110’. An entrance breakwater eliminates surge and rough water. Berths have storage lockers, water, electrical outlets, night lighting, parking, restrooms, showers, and locked gates. There is a launch ramp, a boat yard, a fuel dock, facilities for small boat sailing, and launch sites for windsurfing and paddle craft. There are also sailing schools, non-profit sailing cooperatives, and a yacht club. Recreation opportunities include Adventure Playground, Shorebird Nature Center, an off-leash dog area, kite flying, and a 3,000-foot long pier for fishing or just walking out onto the Bay. The Bay Trail connects the Marina to the rest of the Bay Area with walking and bicycling paths. To contact the Berkeley Marina Harbor Offices call (510) 981-6740, fax them at (510) 981-6745 or email [email protected]. Marine biology and boating classes are offered in the summer for individual school-aged children. The visitor center is an environmentally sensitive demonstration building made from straw bale and the office space is used as a educational resource. Inside we have a fresh water aquarium and a 50-gallon saltwater aquarium with fish and animals from the bay. Different exhibits depict fish, birds, marine mammals and problems with plastics in the marine environment. Please call for more information about our tours. Days Time Tu-Sat 9:00 am–5:00 pm

Bay Interpretive Training Program (Bay It)

If you get excited investigating the beach, riding a boat on the bay, peering under docks and rocks for animal life, or bird watching from the pier, the Berkeley Marina Volunteer Program could be for you! This hands-on training program is great for people exploring a career in outdoor education or looking for worthwhile retirement activities. Training covers such topics as history of the bay, marine habitats, plant and animal life and how to teach children creatively and have fun. For more information, call the Nature Center at 981-6720.

Marina Environmental Education Programs

The unique location of the Marina is used to teach marine environmental education classes to youth all over the Bay Area. Teachers interested in bringing classes to our programs must apply though a lottery process. The lottery happens in September and teachers are chosen for programs through June. The Marina Experience Environmental Education Program has three parts: animal programs, low tide programs, and boat trips. Each program requires a mandatory teacher’s in-service training workshop where teachers receive a packet of informational lesson plans for “pre” and “post trip lessons” geared to their class’s grade level. These lessons were written by our staff, and correlate with the California State Science Framework and include 47 large animal identification cards and pictures.

ways. Staff at the Nature Center will meet with your groups, show you a video on plastic pollution, give safety talks, provide you with bags and gloves and make a map to the best location. Cleanups are great for community service credit and really help change the way we think about what we buy and how we dispose of things. Call for more information and schedule a time.
