FROM OUR PRESIDENT reetings CNC Members!

Well, we got off to a disappointing start this year with a fierce snow storm (you know the one) that resulted in CNC cancelling its Regional Specialty and Awards banquet. But we can look forward to a great schedule of activities for the rest of the year, including a rescheduling of the Regional Specialty for the last weekend of October in Westminster, MD, chaired by Don Sharkey. The Pancake Walk organized by Trish Fornadley is set for March 5 (rain/snow date March 6)--a great way to eat a pancake breakfast with local maple syrup (seconds encouraged) with no guilt as you hike off the calories with your Newf right after breakfast. Julia Sharkey, our Working Dog Chair, has planned for an informal Draft Workshop with Christie Smith in March and a Water Workshop in June instructed by Benita Edds of SENC. Water tests will take place August 19-21, chaired by Scott Rainey; and Draft tests November 4 – 6 chaired by Alice Harwell. Dave Rothschild is planning for Spring Fun Day and Chuck and Cookie Basham will be hosting Fall Fun Day. Dotty Hudson assisted by Cheyenne Hudson will plan, organize and coordinate the very popular Colonial Williamsburg weekend the first Saturday of December.

This year’s Grooming Seminar will be held by Maria Caintic at Donna McConn’s kennel in Amissville, VA. And, Education Chair Brenda McKeel is exploring the possibility of having a whole day seminar on our dogs’ health featuring expert Newf veterinarians. I encourage members, especially newcomers, to volunteer for, or come out and watch, working dog events and dog shows to see our magnificent Newfoundlands in action—doing what they were bred to do in the water and on land, and competing in conformation and obedience in the show rings.

Thanks to Paula McPherson, for taking on the important Membership Chair position in December 2015 and to Margaret Marcus for serving in 2015 and to both for the very smooth transition. Margaret is responsible for updating the membership procedures by putting our forms and directory on the website for easy access, which also results in cost-savings to our Club. I am very pleased to announce that during the first 2016 Board of Directors meeting we voted to move forward to create a CNC Rescue 501c3 this year. Thanks to Donna 2

McConn, our Rescue Chair, who has worked diligently to research, prepare the paperwork, liaison with Newfoundland Club of America, and present all the pertinent information to the Board. Her work will result in benefits to Newfoundland dog rescue and to our Club members who support rescue so generously. As a 501c3 organization CNC rescue will: • Receive discounts from veterinary hospitals and pet retailers; • Be eligible to purchase wholesale; • Be eligible to participate in fund-raising programs with Petco and PetSmart; • Be eligible for public and private grants; • No longer have to pay sales taxes for purchases; • Have the ability to pull Newfs from all shelters (many require 501c3 status). • And donations from you to CNC Rescue will be tax deductible. Wags and Drool, Judith Marshall, CNC President

OF BATTLEFIELDS AND WINTER STORMS

T

he winter months can be a bit boring in Williamsburg without CNC events happening. Unfortunately, the Regional Specialty was cancelled, meaning that Candyman and I had to develop our own plan for fun until Club events start back up in the Spring. We planned a trip to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania the second weekend in February as a result. Mind you, finding the ideal time can get a bit tricky since the Northeast has been getting some rather substantial weather the past few years. It is with this in mind that Candyman and I tentatively planned a two day trip to Gettysburg from February 7 to 9, 2016. The weather report kept changing for those days right up until the time we were scheduled to leave but we decided to go anyway, since only flurries were expected in Gettysburg. Candyman went to the groomer the day before, so he was nice and ready. Saturday was a sleepless night, as I was excited to leave for the trip. Candyman and I were planning on hitting Antietam, another Civil War Battlefield, on the way to Gettysburg. This later proved to be a pleasant way to kill time, as I was not able to sleep the night before the trip. We ended up packing the car and leaving on the trip at about 4:00AM. This got us into Sharpsburg (the town where the Battle of Antietam was held) about 9:00. Candyman and I had a fun time

AKA THE CANDYMAN CAN touring the battlefield and taking a nice walk in the snow that was still present from the blizzard a few weeks prior. I was also able to kill off a roll of film of trips that was in one of my cameras. Candyman and I left Antietam battlefield around 10:00 which put us in Gettysburg for lunch. We ended up at one of my favorite cigar shops in town after eating. This turned out to be a rather enjoyable experience since the owners of the shop are BIG dog people and invited Candyman in the store while I smoked cigars. Candyman rapidly acclimated to the store environment in spite of being naturally shy. This was in no small part to him getting fed and loved on by the patrons. We would later go back to this store (The Union Cigar Club) later in the evening for a Super Bowl party. Monday saw us tour the battlefield and take a copious amount of pictures. We were also able to do something VERY surprising. Candyman and I were able to drive around the old Eisenhower Place without a tour. Apparently the gates are left open in the off season so we were able to go in and take pictures, although we did not get a chance to go in the house. This turned out to be a very special part of the trip. Later, we went back to the Union Cigar Shop and enjoyed everybody’s company some more. We woke up on Tuesday morning to heavy snow, which was not in the weather forecast before we left. We decided to spend an extra 3

day, which turned out to be both fun and wise. The Battlefield was closed to traffic, which meant that Candyman and I could park and take a walk on it in the snow. This turned out to be very fun for both of us, since I was able to let Candyman off leash. The day ended too soon and we had to return to Williamsburg on Wednesday morning. The roads were clear by this time, so we had an uneventful trip back home. The only place with some weather related congestion was between Frederick, Maryland and Washington, DC. At this point, I would like to thank the Union Cigar Club in Gettysburg for making our Winter trip much more enjoyable. Candyman really enjoyed being an unofficial Shop Dog. Submitted by Brad Cole.

2015 CNC RESCUE REPORT

R

escue started off with 4 dogs this year from 2014. All were adopted in the early part of 2015. This year was very costly for Rescue. The majority of the dogs had health issues. Rescue handled a total of 18 Newfs for 2015. • 11 dogs were taken into CNC Rescue’s program. • 4 dogs were adopted privately. • 1 owner decided to keep her dog. • 1 owner got assistance from the OAR Fund. • 1 owners dog was adopted by a local dog groomer. The following health issues occurred this year: • Reaction from anesthesia in a 10 year old – seen by a cardiologist • Incontinence issues • Torn cruciate - surgery • Bloat – emergency surgery • Pancreatitis – needed ultrasound and special diet • Potential cancer – ongoing case • Entropion – surgery • Cataract – seen by specialist • Severe skin issues with infections • Neurological spinal issue – ongoing case

Linus This year was a first for doing a campaign to raise money for Rescue. Caleb and Maisy are a

pair that came into Rescue because their owner died. Caleb bloated while being fostered and since he was in good health we decided to do the surgery. Maisy had a torn cruciate. Our goal was to raise $7,500 to cover both surgeries. We raised $8,500 but then Maisy’s surgery was more due to extensive damage. The final cost for both surgeries was $8,700. Barefoot who was in Rescue for over a year passed away in June. He came to us as a give up because of financial reasons and was in poor health. He had severe skin issues and incontinence most likely due to old age. Many loved him. The top reasons why most Newfs are placed up for adoption: • Divorce • Economy-lost of job/home • Health or death of owners • Dog was too much for family Private adoptions are another way we place dogs. In private adoptions, CNC does not take on the liability of the dog, but assists in finding the correct home for the dog. We provide education of both the family giving up their Newf and the future family in an adoption. We assist with owner with letting them know what they need to do a proper adoption such as a contract, medical history and getting the Newf ready for an adoption. Rescue will send referrals to those interested in a Newf who appears to fit the needs of the dog. Many of the adopters are families that have applied with our Rescue. Private adoptions are done for the following reasons: • The owner wanted to know 10

whom the dog was going too. • No fosters available at time, as we were full. • Newf was healthy and ready to go to new home, saving space and costs for those Newfs who really needed our assistance. We held three events this year to promote Rescue and the club. • Reston Pet Fiesta in Reston, Virginia • Dog Days of Warrenton – Warrenton, Virginia • Home for the Holidays – Reston, Virginia Even though a large part of our Rescue service is collecting applications, placing of Newfs in-need with a family that matches their needs, accounting, networking and the general management of the program, there are many other activities that are performed with the assistance of club members: • Fostering dogs • Transporting dogs • Behavioral counseling • Counseling on how to find a good breeder • Medical issues on Newfs • General questions on the breed • Home checks for adopting families

Bosco

• Assessment on Newfs that are to come into the Rescue service. • Advising of Newfs in-need in their areas • Accepting donations/memorials and writing hand written thank you notes Each dog that comes into Rescue is placed into a foster home. If we cannot find a foster home we ask if the owner can keep the dog until one comes available. If an emer-

gency or special need the dog is taken to the Rescue chair’s kennel.

THANKS TO ALL OF OUR VOLUNTEERS IN RESCUE

broken can only be put in certain foster homes.

Rescue cannot operate without our volunteers. 2015 was a tough year because we had so many ill and neglected Newfs come into Rescue. Rescue begins with a call about a Newf or Newfs. Sometimes we send a volunteer to make sure the dog is a Newf. Photos don’t always tell us. Next our volunteers transport the dogs to a veterinarian or to a foster home. As we try to match our Rescues to the right forever home, we also try to match them to our foster home. Dogs that are ill, not trained, or not house-

We are always in need of foster homes. This is the most difficult piece of Rescue. Without homes for our dogs to go into we have to board them or simply not take them in. Please consider opening up your home for a Rescue. It is an awarding experience. Yes, we do get many “failed fosters” but

We have volunteers that are always ready to go when needed for a rescue. A special big Newf THANK YOU to: Anne and Bob Blaicher Cathy and David Dodds Dave Rothschild Sandy and David Tancreti Kerry Iliff just joined as a Rescue volunteer to foster. She has fostered 2 thus far. Kerry has a background working for veterinarians and she just accepted new employment with a veterinarian in Leesburg, Virginia. Kerry is going to help us with securing accounts with veterinarians in our areas. Thank you

we don’t mind that! Even if you can only foster certain dogs (male, female, old, young, etc.) you can help. Many “Thanks” to all that have volunteered this past year. Without your help Rescue could not be done. Wags and Hugs, Donna McConn, Rescue Chair Kerry for being part of our team! We have more volunteers that have fostered, transported, evaluated and conducted home visits for applicants. We also have volunteers that assist at Rescue events such as the Reston Pet Fiesta. Thank you! If you are ready to become a volunteer please contact Donna at [email protected] If you cannot volunteer your time please consider donating to Rescue. Our Rescue operates off of donations. Your generous donations help Rescue make sure our Newfs go to their new homes in good health. Donna McConn Rescue Chair

CNC DRAFT TEST - NOVEMBER 13-15 2015 Judges: Todd Bennett and Sue Mendleson The Colonial Newfoundland Club held its first three-day draft test, including its first Advanced Draft Test, at historic Gunston Hall estate on November 13-15, 2015. Gunston Hall was the estate of George Mason, a founding father and the author of the Virginia Declaration of Rights. The Advanced Draft Test and Draft Tests were situated on the estate grounds. The mile-long distance freight haul circled the mansion and its outbuildings, proceeding along the path around the formal boxwood gardens and across the viewing mounds, overlooking the lower fields with the Potomac River in the background. Other than it being a bit blustery, the sun shined and the weather was favorable for Newfoundlands. The Advanced Draft Test was held Friday afternoon. Christie Smith, Beacon, and Sonar performed admirably. Each dog nearly qualified, but alas, Friday the Thirteenth prevailed, albeit just barely! Saturday and Sunday backto-back standard Draft Tests were conducted. Out of nine exhibitors, one new Draft Dog (DD) title and four Team Draft Dog (TDD) requal titles were earned Saturday. On Sunday, our eight exhibitors earned two new Draft Dog (DD) titles, two Draft Dog (DD) requal titles, and two Team Draft Dog (TDD) requal titles.

This year’s CNC Advanced and Standard Draft Tests included participants hailing from seven different states: Maine, Maryland, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia. On behalf of the CNC Draft Test Committee, I would like to thank our judges, Todd Bennett and Sue Mendleson, for a job well done. Kudos and thanks to all of our stewards for helping make this test a success. Special thanks are in order to Julia Sharkey (Chief Steward), Don Sharkey (Grounds), Christie Smith who provided the obstacles and assisted me in setting up the advanced course, and to Teresa Rainey (Test Secretary). Bradford Cole and Don Sharkey captured the action in photos. Much gratitude to Virginia Kelly for donating two carts which were auctioned off to support the event and to Cindy and John Flowers for handling the fundraising and for mentoring the first-time Secretary and Chair. Thank you to all of our exhibitors for coming to our test and congratulations to those earning titles. Scott Rainey, Chairman

Rescue – Donna McConn • Four new Rescues were taken in this month (1 or them was brought back in). • Buttercup/Briggs was once again taken back into Rescue. • Bosco and Cooper are 7-year old intact males who were given up by their owners. Jenni Arnett who is a club member notified us about these dogs. The owner no longer wanted them and was going to euthanize them. Bosco had severe skin infections, worms and something wrong with back end. He was totally matted and had to be shaved. Cooper had some skin issues and mats on the underside. Bosco is now being fostered. Cooper has been neutered. Bosco has not been neutered yet due to the numerous infections and poor health. The vet recommended that Bosco should be seen with a specialist. It appears his abnormal gait might be neurological. Bosco can be seen on the 17th which is the day of our meeting. We also have a potential adopter for him already! ➢ Need approval to allow him to be seen that day for an appt. fee of $150 plus x-rays. Prior approval by CNC Board by email for Bosco given by email on November 13, 2015. ➢ Need to ratify vote. ➢ Get a copy of X-rays (DMC) ➢ BoD considers chiropractor and acupuncture. ➢ Motion to ratify our email for approval for Bosco to see the specialist (KP), Second (DR). Without objection, the motion passed. ➢ Motion for fund for Bosco to have one visit with acupuncturist/ chiropractor (KP), Second (JM).

Without objection, the motion passed. • Linus who is 5 years old was given up because his owner has an ill child that needed a lot of care. She said that Linus was not getting the attention he needed. He is overweight and could possibly have an injury on his back leg. We need approval to have him X-rayed if needed to determine what is wrong with the leg. Need information to follow up with breeder. Exam by two separate vets, not cruciate. ➢ Motion to approve to X-rays on Linus to determine leg injury (KP), Second (DR). Without objection, the motion passed. Updates on fosters/adoptions • Sasha is still having accidents but at this point it is probably best to wait until she is in her new home to see if it is stress. We do have someone interested in her. They had their home visit completed this week and will adopt her after Thanksgiving. She is due for a recheck on her eye but the new home can bring her to our vet. • Bear (Little Bear) had the surgery for entropion. She had some complications afterwards. While at the Dodd’s prior to surgery she had some loose stools but they thought it was stress. After the surgery she was vomiting and continued to have loose stools. She was taken to the local vet for more tests. Tests showed pancreatitis. She is on prescription food and medications. She is now back at the Dodd’s home to get the care she needs. The first foster would not be able to handle the medical needs. It is going to be assumed that Little Bear will not be adoptable and should remain at the Dodd’s under foster care.

• An ultrasound was recommended for Little Bear. The test will be between $300 - $400. We need to set this up for next week. Worst case is she has a mass. Best case they don’t find anything and we work to get her pancreatitis under control with proper diet. • Test showed enlarged lymph nodes, thickened walls and nodules in her liver. The radiologist and veterinarian stated it might be cancer but the only way to determine is to do a biopsy, which would be surgical. The other option was to treat with steroids, B12 injections and continue on meds for pancreatitis and prescription diet. • Needs another blood panel • Prior approval by CNC Board by email for ultrasound for Little Bear given by email on November 5, 2015. • Need to ratify vote ➢ Motion to approve the funds for an ultrasound for Little Bear (KP), Second (JM). Without objection, the motion passed. Rescue Activities– Donna Mc Conn, Dave Rothschild • Home for the Holidays event in Reston on November 7, 2015.

IN MEMORIAM BUFFALO

April 1, 2007- January 4, 2016

You were so much more than a dog. You were my best friend, partner in crime, road trip companion, shoulder to cry on, and a permanent member of the family. I remember picking you up at Bear N’ Mind like it was yesterday. We were told “that Blue Boy is going to be a handful” while watching you romp all over your littermates. I never questioned the decision to bring you home and thank god every day that you wound up with us. I do believe it was destiny. The past 9 years were not always the easiest, and had it not been for your loyalty and compassion, they would have been a whole lot harder. When times got tough I could always count on your gentle soul and kindness to help me through it. In June, when we welcomed our son to the world, you greeted him with open arms. Some folks who didn’t know you would say “aren’t you worried about having a newborn around that big dog?” Those that knew you well would say “Buffalo

will make an amazing big brother”. I probably made some mistakes along the way… In fact, I guarantee it. You never complained for a minute. We moved a few times before settling into our forever home. You took it in stride and made our transitions that much easier. In fact almost everything changed over the past 9 years… Really the only constant was the love you showed towards your family. You enriched the lives of so many members of the family, friends, neighbors, and complete strangers. You will always be remembered and never will be forgotten. If all dogs go to heaven; than there must be a special place up there for dogs like you. You are forever in the hearts Zach, Kara, Colton, Julie, Matt, The Karr Family, The Korzh Family, The Hughes Family, your posse at the Gables, The kind people at Montgomery Animal Hospital, and too many more to name. Love, Dad (Zachary Karr)
