our mission:

To enrich the quality of life in West Marin by providing diverse cultural, educational, and community services in a well-maintained environmentally friendly facility.

Cover art: Sally Fairfax “My parents gave me a Baby Brownie camera when I was five and I have been taking pictures seriously ever since. Thirty years later, I began crafting glass. I present them together because I believe that glass suggests the fragility of the poles in ways that photos alone cannot. Glass is superficially similar to ice: it flows and, in some ways, reacts to heat like ice. And while glass can suggest some of the colors one sees, from grey and purple to shockingly turquoise, it is the variety of whites that flow together and react with the blues that I find most evocative. Here I try to express what has compelled me to return repeatedly to the far north and south, and to convey both the wild beauty and the fragility of those vanishing worlds.” www.dancepalace.org

Thursday, Oct. 29, 1:00 to 2:30 PM, Free OLLI - DIXIE VOICES: THE WORLD OF THE ANTEBELLUM SOUTH Americans have long pondered the question of why Southerners—mostly nonslaveholders—were willing to break up the national compact and risk lives and fortunes in defense of their traditional way of life. In this course we will delve into the mind of the Old South in an effort to resolve that puzzle. Each week we will explore the career and philosophical outlook of a key Southern thinker. We will examine the writings of several southern women, and see how they balanced their sectional loyalties with an often uneasy relationship with the “peculiar institution”. Throughout the course, we will be investigating the omnipresent significance of racial consciousness in shaping the world view of “Dixieland”. This course is taught by Mick Chantler, MA. Cost for class is $120 plus Basic Membership $35. 40 years have gone by since her recording of “Midnight at the Oasis,” a chart-topping song about one very romantic evening. The Way Past Midnight show is “two very full sets of music.” In this show, Muldaur unspools anecdotes and photo projections from her friendships with Bob Dylan, Taj Mahal, John Sebastian and Janis Joplin. Promoters call it a multimedia show, but she thinks of it as a visual scrapbook of her musical journey.
