New weight loss surgery center saving lives one pound at a time Neil McSheffrey describes himself as being “insanely overweight” a year ago. Today he is 124 pounds and nine prescriptions lighter. It’s not an elective procedure like liposuction that turned things around for Neil, but a life saving procedure called bariatric surgery. Bariatric procedures include gastric bypass, adjustable gastric band, or vertical sleeve gastrectomy.

With his wife and family supporting him, Neil had bariatric surgery. He describes how his stomach shrunk from 40 ounces, the size of a football, to two ounces, the size of his thumb. “I had no appetite at all and had to be reminded to eat,” he says. “Today I walk 4-6 miles on the treadmill, six days a week and really enjoy that hour.” For many people suffering with obesity, bariatric surgery is the best treatment option. It is for this reason that LRGHealthcare has developed the new Weight Institute of New Hampshire (WINH).

“My daughter-in-law is a dietitian at LRGHealthcare and she told me how bariatric surgery reverses diabetes and many other life threatening medical problems that I had,” says Neil.

“Weight loss surgery is not for everyone,” says Dr. Raza Shariff, fellowship trained bariatric surgeon at WINH. “But for those who need to lose a larger percentage of excess body weight it can be the most effective treatment to reduce or eliminate the health risks associated with being overweight or obese.”

Some of those health risks include diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, stroke, heart disease, sleep apnea, gallbladder disease, osteoarthritis, and some cancers.

Before his surgery, Neil’s nine prescriptions were for his high blood pressure, acid reflux, high cholesterol, and gout. The only medication he takes today is a chewable vitamin.

Assisting our community in achieving better health and wellness is a core mission of LRGHealthcare, and WINH does just that.

“I save a fortune in prescriptions every month,” says Neil. “I feel terrific and my wife thinks I have too much energy!” Like many of us, Neil spent years battling his weight with yo-yo diets. He recalls going on a diet and losing 40 pounds before his son’s wedding. “I lost weight, made it to the wedding photo, and then put it all back on,” says Neil.

In addition to family support, professional support is needed to succeed in meeting weight loss goals safely and for the long term. Dr. Shariff, physicians, nurses, dieticians, and mental health, education, and fitness professionals, supervise all WINH programs. “We work closely with each participant to develop a personal connection,” says Dr. Shariff. “This is a life changing event and our relationship is important as we work toward changing the way people eat, move, and think about food and weight.” WINH is designed to provide the best and safest results from bariatric surgery. The program includes individual appointments with a dietitian as well as with an exercise specialist to create personalized eating and exercise plans. It also includes lifestyle classes to provide you with tools and strategies to change behaviors. There is ongoing support from WINH staff and from support groups. “You’ve been on your own long enough,” says Dr. Shariff to participants.

Let’s tackle this together, once and for all And WIN. Join Dr. Shariff at an upcoming informational session at Lakes Region General Hospital. Call 527-2946 to register.

Breakthrough Robotic Arm Technology!

You don’t need to go to Boston for knee or hip surgery -

the magic is happening here It’s the type of injury that could happen to anyone. Linda Canzano was walking up the stairs in her home when she stumbled and twisted her knee. That small misstep changed Linda’s life for the next five years. From steroid shots to arthroscopic surgery for her arthritis and bone spurs, nothing relieved the pain. “I’ve been dealing with it ever since,” says Linda, “until six weeks ago when I met Dr. Hogan.” Dr. Jeremy Hogan is an orthopaedic surgeon at Advanced Orthopaedic Specialists, a department of Lakes Region General Hospital. “He told me that I was a good candidate for the new robotic MAKO knee surgery,” says Linda. Using a robotic arm to assist him, Dr. Hogan performed the MAKOplasty® partial knee resurfacing procedure on Linda. MAKOplasty® is a ground-breaking orthopaedic treatment option for people like Linda who have early to mid-stage osteoarthritis of the knee and for people diagnosed with degenerative joint disease of the hip. This breakthrough robotic arm technology allows surgeons to make a smaller incision and perform more precise surgery. By lessening the impact on healthy bone, tissue, and ligaments, MAKOplasty® allows for more specific implant positioning resulting in a more natural feeling of the knee or hip. 2011 Focus FALL spring 2013 86 || Focus

“Dr. Hogan is a magician,” says Linda. “I was limping and in so much pain all the time until he cleaned everything up. I can’t believe how much better my knee is already, now my pain is only recovery pain.” “I am thrilled with everyone from my doctor to the staff at LRGH. It has been an amazing experience.” Advanced Orthopaedic Specialists in Gilford, Franklin, and Meredith, and Dr. Arnold Miller at the Laconia Clinic are the first and only orthopaedic team north of Boston to earn MAKOplasty® certification and provide this revolutionary robotic procedure. “You definitely don’t need to go to Boston for medical help,” says Linda. “The hospital and physicians in the Laconia area can do it all.” To learn more about MAKOplasty® attend an upcoming community information session, see next page.
