What is a Council of Europe cultural route? According to Resolution CM/Res(2010)53: “a cultural, educational heritage and tourism co-operation project aiming at the development and promotion of an itinerary or a series of itineraries based on a historic route, a cultural concept, figure or phenomenon with a transnational importance and significance for the understanding and respect of common European values.”

26 CULTURAL ROUTES CROSSING THE WHOLE OF EUROPE The Council of Europe’s cultural routes programme now includes 26 certified routes, from the Saint James Ways to the Route of the Olive tree, as well as the Via Regia and the Via Francigena. They share the objective of illustrating European cultures, traditions and heritage, promoting intercultural dialogue and respectful, sustainable cultural tourism.

The European Institute of Cultural Routes in Luxembourg • “technical agency” of the Council of Europe for the programme • funded by the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg • directed by the EPA Executive Secretary • evaluates certified routes every three years

• assesses new projects for certification, provides information, documentation and training (2011-2012, 25 evaluations of existing routes and new projects, 2012-2013, 10 evaluations, around 20 new projects are receiving advice and assistance)
