Windows XP and UvA wireless manual for end-users

Attention: The IC advises you to update your wlan driver before installing SecureW2. That driver is often outdated and therefore not fit for use with SecureW2. It's also important to not use any wlan manager besides SecureW2.

UNIVERSITY OF AMSTERDAM Informatiseringscentrum Introduction Eduroam is available at many locations around the UvA. Eduroam is a wireless connection to the UvA-net which allows you to surf the Internet on your laptop, read your e-mails and access other UvA-net functions. Eduroam is available to UvA staff and students, as well as guests from other educational institutes. This manual will explain how to connect to eduroam. Laptop requirements Your laptop must have the correct hardware and software in order to be able to connect to eduroam. The requirements are a modern wireless network card, the proper Windows XP updates and the Secure W2 program. Wireless network card The majority of modern laptops include a wireless network card. The Informatiseringscentrum always supplies laptops with the correct wireless network card installed. If you wish to purchase your own wireless network card, make sure it is WiFi compatible and that it supports the IEEE 802.1x and WPA2 / AES standards. Make sure you discuss these requirements with your supplier if you buy your own card. This website: http://www.cisco.com/download/ lists the wireless network cards that meet our system’s requirements. If you are unsure, you can always contact the Informatiseringscentrum. Eduroam will only function correctly if you have installed the latest drivers for your card. For further information, go to our website or talk directly to the company you bought your card from. Windows updates Windows XP must be equipped with a minimum of Service Pack 2 and update kb893357. If you have Service Pack 3 installed, you do not need to install update kb893357. To check which service pack you have installed, go to your desktop and right-click My Computer. A menu will appear. Choose the bottommost option – Properties.

Check Show icon in notification area when connected. Next open the Wireless Networks tab.

Important: Pay careful attention to the check mark before Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings. In some cases your computer may be operating software supplied by the producer of your wireless network card (for example SiteCom Wireless Lan Utility). If this is the case, this option will not be checked. Windows must be able to control the wireless connection itself in order to access eduroam. Therefore, delete or deactivate the operating software your card producer supplied. Should you have any questions about this process, please contact the company that manufactured your wireless network card. As you can see in the window above, the networks uva and eduroam under Preferred networks are already visible. Select one of the networks and click on Properties. If UvA and eduroam are not listed, click on Add and, in the Association tab, fill in as Network name (SSID) : eduroam. Choose WPA2 in the Network Authentication field. Select AES at Data Encryption.

3) How can I verify the IP address? The IP address is automatically obtained via DHCP. Go to Start->run->open then type command and type ipconfig in the DOS box. The IP address should start with 145.18.x.x. If the IP address is incorrect, try one of the following suggestions: Check TCP/IP settings against the instructions above. Reboot your laptop or try ipconfig / renew (in command mode: StartRun) Install the most recent driver for the wireless network adapter (See manufacturer's website). Make sure your personal firewall permits DHCP traffic. If needed, adjust your personal firewall configuration. Perhaps you have found that the DHCP service is off. Go to the Control panel via Start->Settings->Control panel and double click on Administrative tools. Next, double click on Services. Make sure the status of the DHCP is ‘started’.
