As President and CEO, Tom Stalf leads the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, Zoombezi Bay, Safari Golf Club and the Wilds conservation center with a single focus – inspire people to make a difference for wildlife and wild places. Annually more than 2.4 million people visit the Columbus Zoo and its other entities making it one of the most successful zoological institutions in the country and a significant economic engine in central Ohio. Tom brings to his leadership role more than 20 years experience gained by first working as zookeeper and then advancing quickly through every aspect of zoo management – from animal care to exhibit design to financial management to strategic visioning. He became the youngest zoo director in the country when tapped to manage Niabi Zoo in Illinois in 1995 and guided that zoo to gain national accreditation for the first time.

A tireless champion for wildlife, Tom uses his gift of storytelling and love of education to help inspire people to join the Zoo’s mission of protecting animals globally and locally. He has traveled with Jack Hanna for education programs, zoo promotions and national television appearances for more than 15 years, and he does regular speaking engagements and television appearances, as well as speaks on behalf of state and federal legislation that affects wildlife. Tom places a high priority on animal welfare and conservation, and he has traveled to several countries where the Zoo supports programs that help people help protect wildlife including a program helping save mountain gorillas in Rwanda, Africa. Globally, the Zoo has more than 70 conservation projects in 30 countries that are supported by $1 million raised through public donations and fundraisers each year. Tom joined Columbus Zoo and Aquarium in May of 2010 as the Senior Vice President of Operations and one year later was promoted to Chief Operations Officer. The Board of Directors appointed him President and CEO in February 2013. He is a professional member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and has served as an AZA accreditation mentor and is currently a member of the Government Affairs committee. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Western Illinois University.

11-DAY WILDLIFE & EDUCATIONAL EXPEDITION TO

THE BRAZILIAN AMAZON & PANTANAL DAY 1 – SATURDAY, JULY 9 -ARRIVE MANAUS, BRAZIL Following our arrival in the Manaus International Airport we transfer across the northern part of the city and then, for about 15 minutes, by boat, up the Tarumã River, a left-bank tributary of the Rio Negro, to our accommodations, for the next three nights, at EcoPark Lodge. Despite its proximity to the city, the lodge is located in a biologically diverse segment of the Amazon rain forest. Due to its habituated monkey population, pristine forest environment, air conditioned bedrooms and excellent buffet meals, Brazil’s most prominent PhD conservation biologists, many of whom are also leaders in high-end ecotourism services, prefer EcoPark to the other lodges near Manaus. DAY 2 – SUNDAY, JULY 10 - ECOPARK LODGE We awake to the exotic sounds of the dawn chorus and have the option of joining our naturalist guide for an early morning bird walk. After breakfast we begin our exploration of the Amazon rainforest on a trail walk in the mature forest behind the lodge. In addition to Golden-faced Saki Monkeys, which, although fairly common near the lodge, are difficult to find elsewhere, we should be able to see Common Woolly Monkeys as well as dozens of species of birds, frogs, butterflies and other wildlife. In the afternoon we depart, by boat, for the mouth of the Rio Negro River. Here the dark, tannic acid waters of the Rio Negro mix with the sediment-laden Amazon River providing a rich environment for aquatic life. We also explore a black water lake, one of the most unusual and exciting habitats of the Amazon Basin. Their still, mirror-like waters are often crowned by giant Victoria water lilies whose leaves may exceed seven feet in diameter and are capable of supporting the weight of a small child. As the sun sets, we return to EcoPark Lodge, have dinner and enjoy an evening of local music, relax in a hammock, or join our guide for a night hike in search of nocturnal wildlife. B/L/D DAY 3 – MONDAY, JULY 11 - ECOPARK LODGE In the morning we take a fast boat ride up river to a location frequented by pink river dolphins (Inia geoffrensis) which have become habituated to boats, so we will be able to see them at very close range. These unique animals are specially adapted to their riverine environment and differ from their marine cousins in that they have un-fused neck vertebrae, enabling them to turn their heads 90 degrees. This flexibility gives them the ability to navigate through flooded forests. Arapaima, the Western Hemisphere’s largest freshwater fish, are abundant and we will have an opportunity to "fish" for them, harmlessly, by putting a small, dead fish on a hook-less line. Arapaima can grow to two meters in length (6’ 7”) and weigh more than 400 pounds. It is very exciting to experience a huge Arapaima thrash and twirl as it wrenches the bait fish off our line. Following lunch at the lodge, we may swim in a natural pool or relax in a hammock before departing on an afternoon nature walk. Our naturalist guides have a profound knowledge of the rainforest’s plants and animals and will explain the ecological niche each organism fills in this complex ecosystem. B/L/D

DAY 4 – TUESDAY, JULY 12 -ECOPARK LODGE / MANAUS / CUIABA / SOUTHWILD PANTANAL LODGE Following breakfast we return to Manaus for a tour of the famous Opera House, built during the Amazon rubber boom era, before transferring to the airport and checking in for our flight to Cuiaba. Upon arrival in Cuiaba we meet our local naturalist guide and drive, for about 1 ½ hours over asphalt roads and then for another 2 ½ hours into the Pantanal on a raised dirt road known, rather grandiosely, as the “Transpantaneira”, the region’s most famous wildlife viewing highway. Our accommodations for the night are in the SouthWild Pantanal Lodge. In addition to being an excellent location from which to observe habituated Jabiru Storks, Hyacinth Macaws and some of the other 400+ species of birds which have been recorded from this location, it is one of the best sites for predictably seeing wild giant otters. These unique and charismatic animals will often come close to the boat, craning their necks and snorting loudly. After a buffet dinner, we may join our guide for a spotlighting night drive in search of nocturnal wildlife, which often includes sightings of a Brazilian Tapir or Ocelot. B/D DAY 5 – WEDNESDAY, JULY 13 – SOUTHWILD PANTANAL LODGE/ SOUTHWILD JAGUAR SUITES In the morning we travel over the Transpantaneira for about 2 ½ hours to the end of this 145 km-long highway. From here we transfer, by boat, 16 km upstream on the Cuiabá River to the SouthWild Jaguar Suites, a floating, air conditioned hotel. Constructed on the west bank of the Cuiabá River, the Jaguar Suites “flotel” is located in the epicenter of the world’s highest recorded density of jaguars (20 cats per 40 square miles). The surrounding 540 square miles of forest and natural savannahs are a state park and a private jaguar preserve. Many of the 36 individual jaguars regularly seen during the June to November season are habituated to human observers in motorboats, making this sanctuary the first and only guaranteed jaguar viewing location in the world. The unique Jaguar Suites lodge is in world’s best location from which, on a three day visit, you have a 99.9% chance of seeing wild, free-ranging jaguars and giant otters. After checking into our spacious, comfortable, air-conditioned accommodations, a buffet lunch and perhaps a short nap, we join our naturalist guide for an extended boat excursion in search of these and other elusive animals. In the evening we join famed international conservation biologist and National Geographic cover story author, Dr. Charles Munn, for a lecture / discussion regarding the Pantanal and the Jaguar research being conducted here. In 1994, when Munn was a senior field scientist for the Bronx Zoo (WCS), TIME Magazine selected him, along with Bill Gates and Condoleeza Rice, as one of the 100 most promising 100 young future leaders. Sprawling over a 75,000 sq. mile area (twice the size of the state of Ohio) the Pantanal is the world's largest wetland. Eighty percent of the Pantanal’s floodplains are submerged during the rainy season and these nurture a biologically diverse variety of aquatic plants and animals. Marsh Deer, Giant River Otter Hyacinth Macaw, Solitary Eagle, Maned Wolf, Bush Dog, South American Tapir, Giant Anteater and Yacare Caiman are endangered or threatened animals found here. This vast wilderness provides a habitat for some 6,000 -10,000 Jaguars, the densest and healthiest population on Earth. Yellow Anaconda, Golden Tegu, Red-footed Tortoise and Green Iguana are some of the reptiles commonly seen. Of the 400 species of birds that occur on the Pantanal floodplain, 83 are more than a pound in weight, giving this region the longest list of “large birds” in the world. During this expedition we will be able to see many of these birds right next to our bus and boat.

DAYS 6 and 7 - THURSDAY & FRIDAY - JULY 14 & 15 – SOUTHWILD JAGUAR SUITES Morning and afternoon boat outings take us into this vast wetland in search of jaguar, giant otter, tapir, capybara, manned wolf, anaconda, caiman and other wildlife. Following dinner Dr. Charles Munn provides lecture/ discussions and informative programs regarding the natural history of these animals and the geography, biology and conservation programs of the Amazon and Pantanal. Our meals and accommodations are in the SouthWild Jaguar Suites. B/L/D DAY 8 – SATURDAY, JULY 16 - SOUTHWILD JAGUAR SUITES / POUSADA PIQUIRI /BAIA DAS PEDRAS In the morning there is an opportunity for a boat ride in search of wildlife before we transfer to Pousada Piquiri and board our small aircraft charter flight to Fazenda Baia Das Pedras. The name of this 15 thousand hectare ranch, “Bay of Rocks” or Baía das Pedras was inspired by its rock and gravel bottom lakes. It is one of the Pantanal’s most important wildlife conservation sanctuaries. Our accommodation for the next three nights are in the Hotel Fazenda Baia Das Pedras. B/L/D DAYS 9 & 10 – SUNDAY, JULY 17 & 18 – BAIA DAS PEDRAS We have two full days to explore the Fazenda Baia Das Pedras ranch on guided nature walks, 4x4 game drives, from horseback, and by boat. Marsh and pampas deer, giant anteaters, capybara, caimans, howler monkeys, tapir and peccary are a few of the larger animals we should be able to find. Toucans, jabiru stork, hyacinth, yellow and scarlet macaws and rhea are a few of the more spectacular birds we can expect to see. The Pantanal tapir and giant armadillo programs, directed by Patricia Medici and supported by the Columbus Zoo, are two of the ranch’s important conservation initiatives. The long term objectives of these programs are to collect ecological demographic, epidemiological and genetic data and asses the viability of these endangered animals in the Brazilian Pantanal. B/L/D DAY 11 - TUESDAY, JULY 19 – BAIA DAS PEDRAS / CAMPO GRANDE / SAO PAULO / COLUMBUS, OHIO Early risers have the option of participating in a before breakfast dawn walk to listen and watch as the Pantanal wakes up. After breakfast we take the small aircraft charter flight to Campo Grande in time to check in for our scheduled flights to Sao Paulo and the U.S. B DAY 12 - WEDNESDAY, JULY 20 - ARRIVE U.S. As our aircraft lands in the U.S. we arrive home with many fond memories of our wildlife expedition to the Brazilian Amazon rainforest and Pantanal.
