Who’s Who in the Company Scott Spence (Artistic Director / Director) is now in his 24th season at Beck Center! Since 1990, he has produced over 200 productions, directing over 75 himself. The list of favorites grows every season, and includes Parade, A Man of No Importance, Sweeney Todd, Hair, Picasso at the Lapin Agile, The Farnsworth Invention, Reefer Madness, The Fix, Zombie Prom, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, Evil Dead The Musical, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, and the box office smash hits The Producers and Altar Boyz. Last season Scott added to those favorites with productions of She Loves Me and The New Mel Brooks Musical Young Frankenstein. He is very proud of the awards and acclamations Beck Center has received over the past decade, and is especially grateful for having won the Northern Ohio Live Award for Achievement in Theatre in 2006. Outside of these walls, Scott’s directorial assignments have included a remounting of Beck Center’s hit production of Altar Boyz at PlayhouseSquare’s beautiful Hanna Theatre, Das Barbecü at Opera Cleveland, The Last Night of Ballyhoo at Case Western Reserve University’s Eldred Theatre, Oh Dad Poor Dad....at Cleveland State University Summer Stages and Noises Off at both Weathervane Playhouse in Akron and Berea Summer Theatre. An adjunct faculty member at Cleveland State University, Scott has also had the privilege to direct Satre’s No Exit and Strindberg’s Miss Julie. Occasionally on the other side of the footlights, Scott has appeared in Dick Deadeye (Berea Summer Theatre), Man of La Mancha (Jewish Community Center), The Secret Rapture (Dobama) and closer to home at Beck Center in Big River, The Boys Next Door and Laughter on the 23rd Floor. He also had the privilege of joining the cast of Passion, directed by Victoria Bussert, in his only onstage stint in the Studio Theater. Scott holds an MFA in Directing from Western Illinois University and is a trained stage fight choreographer, having studied extensively with the SAFD. As always, he dedicates all the work he does to his two extraordinarily talented leading ladies, Rachel and Carleigh. You both amaze me every day.

Larry Goodpaster (CoMusical Director) is pleased to work on Green Day’s American Idiot with Bryan Bird this summer. An award-winning pianist in high school, Larry went on to follow quite a different path by obtaining degrees in biology, chemistry, veterinary medicine, and business over the next 20 years. Upon receiving his MBA in 1997, Larry decided to return to musical theater in his recreational time. Larry’s love and passion for the arts soon became an obsession. Beginning in January 2008, he spent his days at Beck Center as a volunteer business consultant with Cindy Einhouse, President and CEO. In the fall 2009, Larry was hired as the director of business operations. He is currently the Director of Finance and Administration at Beck Center. Sharing both his artistic talent and business acumen with Beck Center has finally allowed his circuitous career path to come together. Larry would like to thank our audiences and donors for supporting our theater and education programming so generously. Bryan Bird (Co-Musical Director) is no stranger to Beck Center, having music directed Forever Plaid previously this season, and Jerry Springer: The Opera in 2011. He can usually be found offstage right as the second keyboard player to Larry Goodpaster. Bryan has also music directed City of Angels at Hudson Players, and six shows at Olde Towne Hall Theatre, most recently The Musical of Musicals: The Musical. On-stage productions include Company (Paul) at The Cassidy Theatre, and The Cardigans and The Taffetas (Chuck) at Olde Town Hall Theatre. In addition to working in other theaters across Northeast Ohio, he leads the pit for Magnificat High School’s annual musical. By day, Bryan is a graphic artist for a music publisher and the organist for Medina Presbyterian Church. He also moonlights as27a

roller coaster enthusiast. Thanks go to Scott and Larry for the opportunity to rock out this summer, and to Mike and Jason for their immeasurable help during rehearsals. Bryan sends his love to his parents, Bill and Janet, for being supportive, and to his friends for being awesome.

Martín Céspedes** (Choreographer) most recently conceived and staged the Cleveland Foundation 101st annual meeting at Severance Hall (Sir Ken Robinson keynote speaker), and As You like It for Great Lakes Theater, Idaho Shakespeare, and Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival, directed by Edward Morgan. Performance credits include Broadway National Tours of Man of La Mancha with Jack Jones and Ron Holgate, The King and I with Hayley Mills, Marie Osmond, Maureen McGovern and Faith Prince, South Pacific with Robert Goulet, West Side Story with Bebe Neuwirth, and the lavish PBS production of Le Cid with Placido Domingo and the Washington National Opera, broadcast live from Kennedy Center. He is an alumnus of the Jacque d’Amboise National Dance Institute while attending PS 161. Martín is honored to have worked alongside the late legendary producer John Kenley on his final theatrical season. Becky Adams (Stage Manager) is back at Beck Center after most recently stage managing The Young Man from Atlanta, and assistant stage managing Mary Poppins. Her Beck Center stage managing credits include [title of show], Seminar, 33 Variations, Monty Python’s SPAMALOT, The House of Blue Leaves, and The Little Dog Laughed. Becky earned a BA in Theatre from Baldwin Wallace University. Since graduation, she has worked on Slowgirl, God of Carnage and The Mighty Scarabs at Dobama Theatre. Currently he is writing the book and lyrics for a new musical about Mileva Maric Einstein for his Senior Capstone. Riley Ewing (Will) is currently a Music Theater major at Baldwin Wallace Univeristy where he has appeared in A Chorus Line (Roy/Bobby Swing). This is his Beck Center debut. Tekla Gaughan (Ensemble/ The Extraordinary Girl U/S) is very excited to make her debut on the Mackey Main Stage at Beck Center for the Arts, especially with such a kickass musical. He has played in bands around Cleveland for most of that time. Jason started performing at RB Chamberlin High School where he played drums in the grand champion show choir Great Expectations from 1995-1999. During that time he performed with his original punk band Hypnic Jerx. Jason joined local glam rockers Vanity Crash in December of 2003 and is still rocking with them on a regular basis. In 2006, he spent time in Los Angeles performing with the pop/ rock act The Crush. Jason has been keeping the beat on Cleveland theater stages in Hedwig and the Angry Inch in 2009, and Beck Center’s Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson in 2011. He is currently playing in the Cleveland punk sensations, Balloon Knot.

His performance as Patsy garnered him two “Best Actor in a Musical” awards from the News-Herald and BroadwayWorld Cleveland. As a rock musical enthusiast, Pat has recently appeared in High Fidelity (Dick) at Blank Canvas Theatre, TITUS: A Grand and Gory Rock Musical (Bassianus/Demetrius) at Cleveland Public Theatre, Next to Normal (Henry) at Lakeland Civic Theatre, and Bat Boy: The Musical (Bat Boy/Edgar) at the University of Toledo. DeVon Settles (Favorite Son/Ensemble) returns to Beck Center after previously appearing in Porgy and Bess (Sportin’ Life). Recent credits includes the national tour of RENT (Mr. Jefferson, Collins/Benny U/S), The Wiz (Title Role), Leap of Faith (Angel of Mercy), and Romeo and Juliet (Prince) at Karamu House, and HAIR (Hud) at Blank Canvas Theatre. DeVon also appeared in the pilot for Elementary on CBS. Danny Simpson (Ensemble/Tunny U/S) recently graduated from John Carroll University, and he is very honored to be a part of such an amazing group of people for his Beck Center debut. Favorite sound designs at Beck Center include 33 Variations, Wings, Evil Dead: The Musical, History Boys, Equus, Beauty and the Beast, and Of Mice and Men. Richard is an AV Systems Designer for Westlake Reed Leskosky and has worked at numerous theatres, schools, and attractions in Cleveland and throughout the United States as a designer and educator including Ashland University, Baldwin Wallace University, Cain Park, CarnegieMellon University, Chagrin Falls Performing Arts Academy, Cleveland Play House, Cleveland Public Theatre, Cleveland State University, Dobama Theatre, Great Lakes Theater, Idaho Shakespeare Festival, Jewish Community Center of Cleveland, Oberlin College, PlayhouseSquare Center, and Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines. He has also worked as a consultant to award-winning software companies that create products for live event production including Stage Research and Richmond Sound Design. Adam Zeek (Co-Projection Designer) is an alumnus of University of Cincinnati CollegeConservatory of Music. He spent four years with Royal Caribbean International. In his time there, Adam served as lighting technician on several ships and as the head sound and lighting technician on The Brilliance of the Seas. He helped to manage and coordinate the multimillion dollar revitalization of The Brilliance of the Seas, including the install of the revolutionary Centrum WOW. Previous work includes lighting designer for Theatre on the Hill at McDaniel College, master electrician at Gateway Playhouse in Bellport, NY, assistant lighting designer at Cincinnati Ballet, and lighting designer for the Coliseum Nightclub. Green Day (Music) is made up of vocalist/ guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong, bassist Mike Dirnt, and drummer Tré Cool. They grew-up from working-class backgrounds, and came of age in the underground punk scene in Berkeley. Even though they had released 1039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours and Kerplunk, they announced their arrival with 34 Dookie, which earned the band its first Grammy

Award. They continued to top the charts with their subsequent studio albums while entertaining millions of fans. It was their landmark 2004 album American Idiot that launched Green Day into the stratosphere. American Idiot debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard chart, and earned two Grammy Awards.
