1. Introduction This guide explains how to generate custom XML file containing Microsoft Software Licenses information from the MVLS portal so that it can be imported then in Asset Intelligence Catalog through the “Import Software Licenses” wizard of Configuration Manager 2007.

This guide will describes each operation required on SCCM Site Servers and on a workstation. Following operation have been validated on System Center Configuration Manager 2007 Service Pack 1 R2 English version with the International Client Pack 2 installed (version 4.00.6221.1000) and on Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010 (version 14.0.4536.1000 64-bit).

2. Generate Microsoft Software Licenses custom XML file The first step will be to generate the custom XML file containing Microsoft Software Licenses Information.

Prerequisites - User Account with access to Software Licenses Information on MVLS web site - Desktop computer with access to Internet and with Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010 (especially Excel Professional Plus 2010). - Required Site Systems for Asset Intelligence module already installed and configured.

5. At the top right of the Window, click on “Sign In” button, and then enter your credentials. This user account must be allowed to access Microsoft License information on the MVLS web site and must be a Windows Live ID passport.

7. The “License Summary” table is shown, with detailed information about Products, License Product Family, License Version, Effective Quantity, Quantity Unresolved, Quantity Active and SA Quantity. On the top left corner of this table, you will able to select the entire table, just clicking on the table border (one click select the table, a second click deselect it). An information message indicates you if you are selecting or deselecting the table.

11. In the “Create PivotTable” dialog box, select the “Select a table or range” option and then click on the “ ” button to select required cells range. Go to the “License Data” worksheet and select all columns and lines containing Microsoft License Information data, including columns header. Then click again on the “ ” button. Check that the “Existing Worksheet” option is selected in the “Choose where you want the PivotTable report to be placed” section and click on the “OK” button on the “Create PivotTable” dialog box. PivotTable is inserted in the “License Summary” worksheet.

Import Microsoft Software Licenses Data into Asset Intelligence Catalog Once you have created your Microsoft Software Licenses Custom XML file, you’re able to import it in Configuration Manager 2007 and especially in Asset Intelligence Catalog. To perform this action you need access on your Configuration Manager 2007 Primary Site server, with required security rights to manage Asset Intelligence and import data in ConfigMgr Database.

Prerequisites - User Account with access to ConfigMgr Admin console and Asset Intelligence module - A Microsoft Software Licenses custom xml file copied on a shared folder on which the SCCM Primary Site server has full control.

1. Open the ConfigMgr Admin Console on your Primary SCCM Site server and navigate to the “Asset Intelligence” node

Verify that the licensing information has been successfully imported Once you have imported your Microsoft Software Licenses data in Asset Intelligence Catalog you have to check that these data are available in Configuration Manager Database and can be queried for exploitation operation. To perform this action you need access on your Configuration Manager 2007 Primary Site server, with required security rights to manage Asset Intelligence and import data in ConfigMgr Database.

Prerequisites - User Account with access to ConfigMgr Admin console and Asset Intelligence module (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc431400.aspx) - Microsoft Software Licenses data already imported in Asset Intelligence Catalog. - A functional Reporting Point site system

These data could be queried through the Reporting functionality of Configuration Manager and especially through Asset Intelligence Reports.

1. Open the ConfigMgr Admin Console on your Primary SCCM Site server and navigate to the “Asset Intelligence” node, and then select the “Asset Intelligence Reports”.

In the previous Report you will find some information that must be explained. You will find just below some description about columns definition.

License Summary The License Summary shows the estimated Volume License entitlements per each Microsoft product family and version across all active and inactive Licensing IDs in your permission set. The License Summary is a real-time calculation that: - Applies all upgrade and maintenance-type licenses to full licenses acquired per Volume License programs, including Enterprise, Select, Select Plus, Open Value, and Open License programs. - Uses licensing rules and product release dates to produce the most favorable License Summary for the customer.

Effective Quantity The effective quantity is the number of license entitlements per product and version after upgrades have been applied. The effective quantity value allows you to determine whether your organization has license shortfalls and/or surpluses by product and version.

Unresolved Quantity An unresolved quantity appears when the number of upgrade licenses is greater than the underlying qualifying full licenses. An unresolved quantity can occur when information concerning licensing entitlements is incomplete. Active SA (Software Assurance) Quantity The active SA quantity is the number of licenses covered by Software Assurance (version upgrade protection) across all Microsoft Volume License programs, including Enterprise, Select, Select Plus, Open Value, and Open License programs.
