2013: Another Record Breaking Year Letter from Jun Tay, President

As I look back on our accomplishments and challenges in 2013, one thing becomes clear: though some parts of the economy are improving, those improvements have not yet reached those living in poverty, and the demand for our services remains at record levels. This year, more families than ever came to us for help, and we rose to meet that need. In 2013 we saw a record 20, 677 families come through our doors, and distributed a record 1,067,889 pounds of food to serve those families. Each of those families has a different story, but the undercurrent is the same: without our help, they would go to bed hungry. Five days a week, we interact with clients onsite or with our Mobile Food Bank, and we hear the same thing over and over again from them: gratitude. In 2013, we saw 63,065 people come through our doors, humbled and grateful for our assistance. They are grateful to receive fresh, healthy foods, and they are grateful to be treated with dignity, respect and compassion in all of their interactions with our staff and volunteers. Families come in many shapes and sizes, and our clients are no exception. We see all types: single parents, married parents, multi-generational families, couples, and seniors. Our Baby Pantry saw its highest numbers ever, and served 9440 children: these families received toddler friendly foods and formula, and in partnership with Westside Baby also received diapers, clothes and car seats. We’ve also seen a steady increase in the number of seniors who rely on us for help, and served a record 17,098 individuals age 55 and older in 2013. At the end of the day, we cannot do any of this work without the support of people like you, and like our clients we are humbled and grateful for that support. Every month, more than 200 volunteers give us their time to make sure that food gets to those who need it, and every day we rely on the financial contributions of donors, sponsors, partners, and agencies who contribute to our mission. With that support, we are prepared to meet the demands of 2014, and to continue nourishing our community in every way possible. Sincerely,

Jun Tay President

Our Clients’ Cultural Diversity Did You Know?

Our Clients WCFB provides intake services and written materials in Arabic, Cambodian, Chinese, English, Russian, Spanish and Vietnamese. As part of a highly diverse community, we work with our volunteers and staff to learn about cultures and engage with clients to learn more.

By engaging our clients in their own languages we learn more about culturally relevant foods (such as Halal meats) and how we can meet nutritional needs in a culturally appropriate manner. This is an area on which we work particularly hard and are proud of – it is our desire to be part of our community and not merely a service provider. By placing emphasis on languages and cultural understanding we know we are providing the best service possible to a changing community.

Programs & Client Story White Center Food Bank

2013: Programs A core belief of the WCFB is that making our services accessible to our clients is one of the most important things we can do. To meet those needs, we are not only open during the day four days a week, but we also offer evening and Saturday hours. For seniors who have difficulty getting to us, we offer a Mobile Food Bank that sets up at local senior housing; for those with disabilities that keep them homebound, we offer Home Delivery. We also recognize that different people have different needs, and we strive to meet those needs. We offer special foods for babies and toddlers, low sodium and high fiber foods are given to seniors, and culturally appropriate foods are distributed to honor our community’s diverse traditions: we offer Halal meat, rice, beans, tortillas, and more. Healthy Foods are the core of what we do, and we have several programs to make sure that we offer high quality fruits, vegetables and proteins to our clients. In addition to the foods that we gratefully receive in the donation stream, we have a Healthy Foods Purchase Program to buy milk, eggs, and meat, as we believe that proteins are an important cornerstone of a healthy diet. Additionally, we provide a $5 Healthy Food Gift Certificate (redeemable at local groceries for eight pounds of fresh produce) monthly. We partner with City Fruit, Food Lifeline’s Grocery Rescue, and local grocery stores to bring in fresh fruits and vegetables. Self-Reliance is a key value at White Center Food Bank, and so we also teach our clients about nutrition by offering cooking demonstrations with nutrition lessons led by a nutritionist once a week at the food bank during distribution hours. Additionally, we have a flourishing Garden Program: our onsite gardener

not only grows fruits and vegetables for distribution, but teaches our clients how to grow food either in containers or in one of the P-patch garden plots run by the food bank at local parks.

Client Story A father, his two children, and his wife appeared at our door after food distribution hours. They had never been to our building before and they weren’t sure what to expect, and it was clear when they walked in that they were nervous and uncomfortable. Our front desk receptionist greeted them with a “How may I help you?” and the father looked at the ground, with his family behind him. “We need some help....” he started, before his voice trailed off. Our receptionist smiled and said “No problem!” and told him about our hours of food distribution, and he listened silently. “Is there any way...is there anything that I can get now?” he whispered. “I never thought I’d be here, but....I can’t feed my family.” It was our privilege to assist him: not only were we able to give him an Emergency Feeding Program bag to get him through the day until our next food distribution, we were able to sign up his family for regular distribution (50-75 pounds per visit, two visits per month). We were able to look him in the eye and promise that we could help, and we could also promise healthy proteins like milk, eggs, and meat, but also fresh fruits and vegetables. We watched that father’s posture change: as he turned to face his family again, he had a smile on his face. “Anybody want a snack?” he asked, and his daughter tore into the bag we’d offered. He watched her get the food from the bag, and turned back to us. His voice was hoarse with emotion. “Thank you,” he said. “Thank you so much.” Our receptionist smiled at him. “We’re glad to help.”
