What You Do To Annoy Your Dog by Amy D. Shojai, Certified Animal Behavior Consultant

hile aggravating dog habits make owners show their teeth, clueless humans also raise the dog’s blood pressure. Here are seven common things you do to make your dog howl.

W

Misunderstanding His Bark: Dogs use barks to communicate alarm, excitement and boredom–and owners annoy dogs by ignoring these important warnings. – Shouting “Shut up!” can increase barks if your dog thinks you’re joining the barkathon. – Ignoring some barks — squirrel alert! — could encourage a dog to stay quiet when a burglar drops by. – Lonely dogs relieve boredom by talking to themselves with barks or howls. Instead of yelling when your dog sounds off, say “Good bark,” so he knows you heard him. That will also reassure him that you plan to address the scary squirrel issue that he so kindly pointed out. You might also try create a three-bark limit before asking him to hush with a treat or toy that keeps his mouth busy and quiet. (Puzzle toys stuffed with treats are particularly good at keeping bored dogs entertained.) Being Inconsistent With Potty Training: Accidents in the house are common owner complaints, but dogs don’t think we play fair. Yelling at your dog to stop mid pee or punishing the dog minutes or hours after she’s done the dirty deed is confusing. She knows you’re unhappy but won’t know what to do instead. Particularly confusing is if you do something crazy like rubbing your dog’s nose in her mistake. Anger over potty problems teaches your dog to hide deposits better and avoid “going” in front of you, which makes it even harder to explain proper potty manners. Instead, take your dog to the right spot after meals, naps or playtime, and reward her production so she understands that pooping outside on the street is what you want. Incarcerating Him Outside: Though dogs enjoy spending time outside, they want to be part of the family. Leaving Fido PAW PRINTS | February 2012

alone too much hurts his feelings, so he’ll dig, climb or jump fences to find company. You may think tethering or chaining is a solution, but such tactics can increase aggression–tethered dogs can’t get away from scary or threatening situations and use their teeth instead. If you think your dog is feeling too fenced in, boost the time you spend with him and work to make him feel like part of the family. Forcing a Car Ride: Dogs either love cars or hate them, based on what happens during or after the ride. Work to associate the car with fun, positive experiences rather than just trips to the vet. Go for rides to the dog park or stop at the drive-through for a tasty treat. Leaving Him Behind: Separation anxiety affects some dogs so much that they throw fits if left alone. Dogs will destroy objects or even injure themselves trying to soothe their angst or escape to follow you. One way to handle this is by helping them get accustomed to your coming and going. Stage situations where you leave and quickly come back over and over again to dilute the power of your absence. Puzzle toys also keep the dog’s mind (and teeth) occupied during the critical first 20 minutes or so after you’ve left. Making Him Go Out in Bad Weather: Sure, some breeds adore romping in snow, but those same dogs may hate going out in the rain. Whatever the case, each dog, regardless of breed, will have its own preferences about going out in bad weather. But you can diminish the discomfort. Invest in a raincoat or jacket for your dog to protect him from the elements. Consider creating an indoor-potty zone for tiny dogs who get chilled easily outside. Sleeping Late: Dogs can’t imagine why owners sleep late on weekends when the best sniffing and walking time is the break of dawn. Cold-nose pokes and raising a ruckus points out empty bowls and full bladders. Dogs believe their job description includes keeping owners on the proper schedule. Understand that and try to stick to a regular timetable.

Volunteer of the Month... CARLOTTA LONSDALE Carlotta is a dream volunteer who walks the small dogs Monday through Friday. MaxFund can only dream to have volunteers like Carlotta—people like the postmen who come in the cold, warmth, spring, summer, fall and winter—rain or shine. She has been at MaxFund since 2007 and has made a huge impact for the little dogs! She makes sure that each and every small dog gets out for a walk before noon. Everyone deserves their time in the sun.

FROM THE WORLD OF GUS No no! Bad boy! I hate to hear those words. Why then, you ask, do they have to use those words on me so often? I get reprimanded more than all the other pets together. Am I really just a bad boy? First, let’s deal with the cat part of our family, because they are different from all other creatures that I have encountered. Cats are not stupid; they know what they are “supposed to do.” But cats reserve for themselves the right to decide for themselves what is right or wrong. Cats agree 100% with the philosophy of the ancient Greek Epicureans: always avoid what is painful, and do what brings pleasure. For ancient Greeks that philosophy resulted from hundreds of years of reasoning and debate. For cats it is because it is. For dogs it is more complicated. For instance my constant companion, Gypsy, a sweet obedient Setter/Lab cross, is a very bad dog if she can bolt through a door or slip a leash. She will run. She will run for hours until she is exhausted. She will cross the road and chase things. Very bad. She will act ashamed when she comes back and go back to her normal very good behavior. But, you know, next week or next month, if Gypsy gets a chance to run, nothing can stop her. For me there is no one thing. I just can’t help pushing the envelope on everything, finding what I can get away with before thunderbolts start being hurled from Mount Olympus. In the end we all know, no matter how we misbehaved, that it won’t be long before we get back into the arms of the family, and can enjoy our full complement of love.

Carlotta is very friendly, outgoing, and always cheerful. She is willing to hold a dog for pictures if asked. When someone suggested nominating her for volunteer of the month, she didn’t want it, because her focus is not on recognition. Her focus is strictly on the animals. But she is too great of a volunteer not to honor! Thank you, Carlotta, for all you have done! The small dogs thank you too!

Is Gus in trouble again?

A CAT’S UNIVERSE by Snoopy & Gizmo

WOW! 2012!! Time sure flies when you are having fun and we always try to do that. Gizmo and I were watching TV the other day and everyone was talking about making “New Year’s Resolutions”. Some people were planning to lose weight. Some said they were going to eat better or exercise more. We are not sure why it is so important to make a resolution, but not wanting to be left out, we decided our resolution would be to just have even more fun. That might mean sleeping longer on cold days, playing more or coaxing our people to sit down longer so we could get in their lap or curl up beside them for extra loving. Now the “extra love” part is something we think everyone should consider. They say that petting an animal lowers your blood pressure and makes you healthier. Everyone seems to want to be healthier, so we think people should consider giving an extra hug or kiss or holding someone who is sad, and that might be helpful (we’ve never seen people pet one another so that may not translate). Perhaps people’s lives are just so busy that they forget the little things. Just saying “thank you” can make someone’s day a little nicer. After all you can’t hug or kiss everyone. Please be sure to remind all you friends and family that there are still lots of animals in shelters that are still looking for their New Year wish of a forever family. We wish you all a great New Year! Your Cat Reporter, Snoopy

FOSTER OF THE MONTH Kathleen Hall Kathleen is an angel for MaxFund who has fostered 10 dogs since 2007. After her three dogs passed away in a short time, she wasn’t emotionally ready to commit to having a dog full-time but still wanted a canine connection. So she decided to foster. She started with Friday, whom she had for two years until he died. Then the MaxFund asked her if she would foster a paralyzed Dachshound, and she couldn’t resist. As she says, “How could I say no?” Since then, she has fostered mostly older, big dogs who have health issues or need socializing before they are ready for adoption. According to her, her job is to get the dogs as healthy as possible, remind them what it takes to be a good indoor family member, and assess them for certain behaviors. Will they get along with cats? Other dogs? People in general? How are they with kids? Are they house broken? Do they like men more than women? Sometimes it takes a while to get their health issues under control but she enjoys helping many dogs learn to love and trust a human again. She cuddles with them, plays with them, teaches them manners, and helps them learn to be part of a family again (or for the first time). According to her, that gives her such a warm feeling of satisfaction. While all of her fosters have a special place in her heart, some really stand out. Reno was a Shar Pei who stole her heart. He suffered from skin disease, had allergies, could barely hear and was blind in one eye. In his good eye, the skin kept his eye covered so he couldn’t see from it either and would have to tilt his head at every possible angle hoping to get a peek at the world. His skin issues made him smell extremely bad but he had such a good heart, was sensitive and kind to other animals. He was affectionate once he got to know you. His life was less than ideal, so Kathleen focused on getting him to wag his tail, which made her heart soar when she got this sign of approval from him. His skin condition finally got under control and he was ready to go to a permanent home. Despite his difficult life, he was never moody and was a role model for Kathleen on how to treat the world even when life is challenging.

Sheba is her most recent foster. Sheba was at MaxFund for almost three years and was starting to get institutionalized, so Kathleen took her home. When she first arrived home, she was very confused having so much space to roam and needed a small room to feel secure. After a couple of months, Sheba finally felt comfortable to hang out in the living room with everyone. Now, Sheba spends time wherever Kathleen is in the house. When Kathleen is at work, Sheba sleeps in the living room either on her orthopedic bed or one of the couches where she can watch out the big picture window all day—such a difference from her kennel at MaxFund! Unfortunately, Sheba is roughly 10 years old and needs two surgeries, so any adopter that has called has been scared off. At least Sheba can live with Kathleen until she has her surgeries and gets adopted, or she passes away. WHY DOES SHE FOSTER? Kathleen knows that she could adopt a dog. But then she could give only one a good life and by fostering, she can help many dogs learn to love and trust a human again. They have all been a little shell shocked from being plucked out of their old lives and dropped into the shelter, and Kathleen wants to help them. She discovered she has a knack for loving these wonderful animals while she has them and she gets so much satisfaction from helping them. She knows this is what she is meant to do. She is truly happy when one of her foster kids goes to a new home. She sends them off with a hug and a prayer, and she moves on to the next one she is destined to help. According to Kathleen, she certainly gets more than she gives from fostering these wonderful dogs who just want someone to love. Thank you, Kathleen, for helping these dogs and giving them a loving home until they find their forever, adoptive home or pass away with you. They, and the MaxFund, are so lucky to have you! You, too, can experience the joys of fostering. MaxFund is always in desperate need of foster homes, especially cat foster homes. Please contact the shelter today to find out how you can foster.

MAXFUND’S MAILBAG

you know, Nancy was just wonderful as well. She not only sent home some of the food Navi had been used to she also let her pick out a toy to take home.

Dear MaxFund, Enclosed are a couple of pictures of our adoptees from February. As you can see, they are struggling to adapt to the sunroom environment. If anyone remembers, they had the names Lilly (with one eye) and Katy. They are now Lilly and Sassy. She’s a “sassy lassie.” They have taken over the house.

Thank you again for all that you do to keep animals safe and loved. Melody & Rogelio

Thank all of you for your efforts, Danny & Marilyn Ramsey Bea Hi MaxFund, Just sharing a couple of pictures of our dear rottie girl Bea from this Halloween. She attended her first ever party and was quite the socialite, impressing everyone with her manners, and kisses. Lilly and Sassy

Thanks! Lisa Dear MaxFund,

Kara immediately took to being called Navi, so she is officially Navidad now and she couldn't be happier in her new home. We were amazed at how quickly she settled down and made herself right at home. We couldn't have asked for a better dog! She's enjoying belly rubs and walks in the park and has claimed the couch as her own. We've even had a few successful interactions with the cats. As I'm sure

Navidad Dear MaxFund, Brownie (now known as Champ) who we adopted last June, and Shirley (now known as Joy) who we adopted in 2008, along with their human servants, Larry and Debby, are hoping everyone at the MaxFund is having a happy holiday season. Things are excellent here. Joy and Champ are best friends who are real attention-getters in the neighborhood. One lady even comes out with a biscuit for each of them when she sees them walking by. It’s hard to get them past that house when she’s not home! Continued on page 7

6

Continued from page 6 They were fortunate to have squirrels build a nest in the big ash tree by our deck, and the squirrels will come to the door to look for them in the mornings if they’re not paying attention and ready for a chase. It would have been nice if Champ had chosen to sleep in his own bed burrowed into his own blankets the way Joy does, but we don’t mind him sleeping between us – except when he crowds. He’s a wonderful little character, and we wanted to let the MaxFund know how well he’s doing now since you cared for him for so many months and hope that all the rest of the furries on your website find loving homes also. Thanks for putting us all together! Larry & Debby Krupicka

THANK YOU ARVADA BIZ CONNECTION (ABC)! We wanted to acknowledge a small Meetup Group that featured MaxFund as their local charity for the months of July, August and September of 2011. Their group collected and donated to MF $1000.00 at the end of the quarter! Super! Thank you so much Barbara Ilyes, Virlie Walker, Debbie Sloan, Jackie Meyer, Robin Wiggs and many others in the ABC, that supported MF each week for 3 months. We (Ken Mann, Jan Eckhardt, Chelsea Manschot and a few others from MF) met weekly to network with this group and discuss the mission, the goals, the animals and the shelter, the needs and the various events of MF. Among them, the Molly-Dharma Run, the Lucky Mutt Strut, Puttin’ on the Max, and others. This connection was made when Ken Mann was contacted because of his connection to the Annual Molly-Dharma Run … a motorcycle ride and block party event that is scheduled every year on the 2nd Sunday in June. Please contact, support, and perhaps join the Arvada Biz Connection at http://www.meetup.com/Arvada-Business-Connection/ “The Arvada Business Connection meets Wednesday nights in various Olde Town Arvada establishments (see calendar for specific location). We are a Business and Social gathering for professional people who believe in building long-term relationships. While we are new to Meetup, we have been meeting on a weekly basis for 6+ years. We collect $5 from each participant – 100% goes to a local charity, and we feature a new charity each quarter.”

THANK YOU ABC!

Dear MaxFund, Just giving you an update on Camille the sweet little girl we adopted Friday, her name is now "Lucy Joy". I have no idea where my daughter heard the name, but that's what it is. She is doing very well on potty training, IF the kids pay attention; she actually sits in front of the door letting you know she has to go. We have yet to convince her that she can go out the doggie door all by herself, but I am hoping she tackles her fear of the door soon. She is fitting in very nicely and LOVES to PAW PRINTS | February 2012

sleep in bed with her people. If she is not playing she is sitting in someone’s lap. She made the family trip to Grandma and Grandpa’s for an overnight visit and did very well. Grandma and Grandpa were very impressed with her good behavior. I just wanted to thank you all again for what you do, it is very important and wonderful! Sincerely, Daphne and Family
