Small Axe Forge specializes in decorative metalwork. By Nicole Cohen

For the husband-andwife team of Byron and Kalita Pennington, their metalworking business is all about the challenge. They consider themselves problemsolvers when it comes to fabricating a variety of pieces from light fixtures to furniture, whether it is new, a reproduction or restoration. The Penningtons founded Small Axe Forge in Colorado in 2006, relocating a few years later to Richmond to be closer to family. “We had so much creativity between us that we really wanted to do something with it,” Byron says. “We had gotten sick of working for other people and giving that away, so we felt it was time to go out [on our own].” The couple are both hands-on metalworkers but come at it from different backgrounds that make for a perfect match in running the business: Byron attended classes at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Department of Sculpture, and Kalita went to the VCU School of Business.

While the Penningtons mainly work with metals, they also use a variety of other materials, such as plastic and glass. Small Axe Forge’s work can be seen around Richmond — they’ve created the signs for both Décor and Strawberry Fields Flowers & Finds, the receptionist table inside Art 180, and the gate for Fat Dragon on the Boulevard.

In addition to custom fabrication, they perform residential restoration work and antique repair. Most notably, they fabricated a pair of 8-foot-tall spiraled trellises for a home in Doswell, reproductions of a pair from a seaside town in Italy. One of the more complicated jobs they have taken on was the restoration of a pair

of crystal chandeliers inside the Patrick Henry Hotel in Roanoke. Each 1925 chandelier was made from nearly 9,000 crystals. When they were taken apart and cataloged, the Penningtons discovered more than 2,000 crystals were missing. They searched for matching crystals online, ordered new ones from as far away as Australia, rummaged through a variety of antique stores and called places all along the East Coast. “We ended up being able to put them back together complete,” Byron says. The Penningtons are currently working on the interior metalwork for upcoming restaurant Rancho T at 1 N. Morris St. The restaurant is co-owned by Q Barbeque owner Tuffy Stone and Ed Vasaio of Mamma ’Zu, Edo’s Squid and Dinamo. Byron and Kalita are creating wine racks, shelves, bar stools, a tap tower, coat hooks, an awning and other metallic furnishings for the location.

You may have seen Ken Roeper’s work around Richmond and Washington without realizing it. The owner of Crystal Details, he cleans, repairs and restores vintage light fixtures. He’s worked on fixtures in The Jefferson Hotel, the governor’s mansion, the Virginia State Capitol and U.S. Capitol. Specializing primarily in crystal, he has been in business for 17 years. Roeper provides services from restoration, cleaning, assembly and repairs to installation, rewiring, packing, storing and delivery. Though he has a shop in Shockoe Bottom, he performs most repair and cleaning on-site. He says there is little reason to move a fixture unless it is being relocated, stored or requires extensive repair. “I can tend to be almost full-service on-site, which is something that a lot of my clients like,” he says. “They don’t have to let their [light fixture] go, and they get curious about how I do

what I do. Sometimes they just sit and watch.” Roeper cleans crystal chandeliers by hand. The process begins with an “undressing” in which he removes prisms, slack chains and parts of the frame from the fixture. After performing an initial dry dusting, Roeper uses a crystal cleanser to handwash the prisms. On some fixtures, he wears

white cotton gloves to buff the crystals once they have dried. Finally, he “redresses,” or reassembles, the fixture. Roeper says the worst thing you can do is spray a chandelier, because it can create corrosion and potentially harm the electrical components. Beyond crystal, Roeper works with a variety of vintage lighting, from turn-of-the-century chandeliers made

of iron, wood, brass or copper to Mid-century Modern fixtures. Occasionally, he takes on modern lighting. In 2005, Roeper assisted in the restoration of the State Capitol, during which he removed all of the light fixtures, then cataloged, photographed and stored them until they went to auction a few years later. His work at the U.S. Capitol involved cleaning chandeliers as well as restoring silver and crystal wall sconces for one of the Senate hearing rooms. The wall sconces had to be removed, stored and returned, but he performed the cleaning on-site. The production company for AMC’s Turn series hired Roeper to replace the chandeliers in Petersburg’s Centre Hill Mansion with period pieces reminiscent of 1776. “Sometimes I just have to pinch myself when I realize where I’m actually working,” he says, “because some of these places are just magnificent.”

Concrete Ideas was born from a DIY homeimprovement project. After retiring from 30 years of teaching biology at Virginia Commonwealth University, Stan Webb needed something to do. He had enjoyed making concrete patios and sidewalks at his home, and with wife Noelle’s assistance, he started the business 10 years ago. Today, son Zachary is the shop manager, and daughter Kathleen works there part time. “There’s a lot of science involved in making high-strength concrete,” Webb explains. “I get to use some of my chemistry.” Webb knew his aging knees would not hold up to a career in patio and walkway construction, so he learned how to fabricate concrete countertops instead. In addition to counters, Concrete Ideas makes concrete sinks, tables, furniture, kitchen islands and even jewelry. One of their most popular items, sold through an Etsy shop and at Orange in Carytown, is a pet bowl. Stan got the idea when Zachary came

home from college with a Rottweiler. The dog was always turning over his bowl. Stan solved the problem by making a bowl out of concrete. Webb’s concrete spa lounge chair, designed in an “S” shape to make it appear as if it is floating in air, is as stylish as it is comfortable. “Once you get in it, you don’t want to get out of it,” he says. “You wouldn’t think concrete would be

By using materials such as waste products from blast furnaces and cement substitutes, Webb strives to be as environmentally friendly as possible. He

incorporates recycled materials, water-based sealers and wet grinds to cut down on dust. The company uses recycled glass bottles from local wine bistros and James River Cellars to add textural interest and sparkle to its mixes. The focus on sustainability satisfies LEED credits, attracting builders who are looking to receive recognition for green manufacturing and design. Concrete Ideas’ past work includes the serpentine bar inside Casa Del Barco on the Canal Walk, winetasting bars at Cooper Vineyards in Louisa and Early Mountain Vineyards in Madison, and benches for American Family Fitness. Webb enjoys his second career, and he likes seeing smiles on his clients’ faces when they see what he has created for their homes. He has even had the opportunity to make concrete items for his former students’ homes. “Years and years ago they were working for me for a grade, and now I’m working for them.”

Restoring and refinishing furniture is a skill that has been passed down through generations of Seth Woods’ family. Woodworking was a hobby of his grandfather and his uncle. His father, Charles Woods, inherited that same interest and started Woods Refinishing and Restoration in 1979. Seth began working in the shop at age 15. “Growing up, I always loved spending time with [my father] in the woodshop,” he says. He took over the company when his father died last December. Woods specializes in refinishing and restoring antiques to preserve the original finish, and prides himself on providing high-end finishes such as lacquer and hand-applied, high-gloss French polish. Other services include repairs and building reproduction and custom furniture. Woods’ uncle Bob Woods, an investment

banker who builds furniture as a hobby, arranged an apprenticeship for him about six years ago. Woods studied in San Francisco under Luigi Rossi, an internationally acclaimed furniture restorer, and learned his finishing process

It is a complicated method of French polishing in which thin coats of shellac are applied completely by hand. Woods performs museum-quality restoration on period pieces usually predating the 1850s. If the piece still has its original finish, Woods restores what is

already there by cleaning it up and making repairs that don’t jeopardize the integrity of the piece. “It makes the piece of furniture a lot more attractive,” Woods says. “Sometimes it turns it from being not useful to being a useful piece of furniture.” Woods makes custom reclaimed wood furniture from salvaged yellow pine that has come from historic Shockoe Bottom buildings that have been renovated and from a huge inventory of reclaimed walnut obtained from a federal courthouse library nearly 10 years ago. Recently, Woods had three pieces of his furniture on display in the Charlottesville Design House, including a Chippendale chest of drawers from 1980 that Woods restored, completing work his father had started on 20 years ago but never had the time to finish.
