Who We Are Established as Samsung Sanghoe (Samsung Trading Company)—a small business trading farm produce and consumer goods—back in 1938, we have played a key role in the advancement and globalization of Korea’s economy, both as the mother company of the Samsung Group and as the nation’s first and most prominent general trading company. Our 1996 merger with Samsung Engineering & Construction was an important milestone in our emergence as a global company in both scale and capabilities. Backed by a global network, outstanding business capabilities, and excellent workforce, our Trading & Investment and Engineering & Construction Groups are today serving and satisfying customers around the world. And the synergy that these two groups create is why our global competitiveness continues to grow as we lead the way forward.

Leveraging the know-how and unique

capabilities we have cultivated in the three decades that have passed since we entered the resource development business in 1979, we work around the clock to provide our customers with a stable, reliable supply of energy resources. One example of this is our successful oil field development project in China’s Mahuangshan West block that began commercial production in 2007, culminating a decade of exploration and development. Another is our acquisition of an equity interest in five US oil and gas fields in the Gulf of Mexico in 2008 that collectively produce

As we continue to aggressively pursue resource development

opportunities around the globe, we are also ramping up investment in advanced new and renewable energy solutions such as solar, wind, hydrogen fuel cells, and biofuels. We believe that our expertise in financing, market intelligence, and marketing puts us in a unique position to lead the way to a brighter, cleaner energy future in the years to come.

Ankor Energy, Gulf of Mexico, USA In 2008, we teamed up with Korea National Oil Corporation to take over the operations of five producing oil and gas fields in the Gulf of Mexico with estimated reserves of 65 million barrels from Taylor Energy.

Precision Stainless Steel Production

At Samsung C&T, we are making rapid inroads into the precision stainless steel field. Our

progress is driven by a global network, decades of experience in steel trading, and the operational know-how gained through our management of Romanian stainless steel producer Otelinox over the past decade.

Precision stainless steel is a high-tech, value-added

material used in components for the automotive, infotech, electric, and other major industries. Markets with heavy concentrations of these industries such as China and Eastern Europe are driving steady growth in demand. This promising outlook has prompted us to accelerate our expansion in this field in recent years. In 2002, we commissioned a new mill at Otelinox. Then in 2008, we acquired Myodo Metal, one of Japan’s top-five producers. We are currently building a new state-of-the-art mill in Pinghu, China.

In the coming years, we expect our

successful Otelinox business, the technical leadership of Myodo Metal, and our new mill in the fast-growing Chinese market to generate considerable synergies. In addition to enabling us to meet growing demand in key markets, this global production capability will position us to lead the way as the world’s top supplier of precision stainless steel in the not-so-distant future.

Otelinox, Romania Our successful turnaround of Otelinox following our 1997 acquisition of that struggling stainless steel producer earned that firm the Romanian Chamber of Commerce’s best-managed privatized firm award in 2001 and 2002. 18

Project Organizing

At Samsung C&T, we offer integrated business solutions for the oil and gas, public infrastructure,

communications, transportation equipment, and machinery industries. Our extensive organizing capabilities include project consulting, engineer-procure-construct (EPC) contracting, financing, investment, risk management, off-take, and operation and maintenance services. In today’s tough business environment, project finance is often the biggest challenge. We are experts in arranging buildoperate-transfer (BOT), build-lease-transfer (BLT), and build-own-operate (BOO) projects to help developing countries move forward with the power, port, and other infrastructure projects they need to grow. A prime example of this is a large-scale LNG receiving terminal BOO project in Manzanillo, Mexico that we and consortium partners Korea Gas Corporation and Mitsui & Co. won in 2008. As the consortium initiator, we brought together a compelling combination of LNG project experience, operational expertise, fundraising, and EPC capabilities to give the customer a superior solution that created a win-win deal for all parties.

Other notable oil and gas projects that we have

executed in recent years include major facilities at Ghana’s Tema Oil Refinery and a floating storage and offloading unit in the Middle East. Today, we continue to steadily upgrade and expand our project organizing capabilities to help companies and countries around the world build the industries and infrastructure they need to lead the way in the 21st century.

Tema Oil Refinery, Ghana During the decade running from the early 1990s through the early 2000s, we worked with TOR on a variety of successful modernization, expansion, tankage, and pipeline projects. 20

In the world of business, sometimes you lead the way by following a well-traveled road. Other times, you do it by blazing a whole new trail. At Samsung C&T, we started out as a simple import and export business seven decades ago. Today, we are helping customers around the globe lead the way with creative, integrated business solutions. We are a rising energy and resource developer, exploring and tapping new

products, delivering materials that ensure superior performance and value. And we are a world-class project organizer, providing specialized services and integrated solutions for the infrastructure that will drive tomorrow’s growth. While we have a lot to be proud of, we recognize that there is still a world of opportunities waiting for solutions. And as we move forward to deliver solutions that create greater value for our customers, you can be sure that we will also be leading the way to a more prosperous and abundant future around the globe.

Social Commitment At Samsung C&T, our commitment to the common good and human values guides us as we ceaselessly work to make local communities better places for all to live. Our worldwide presence through our global network enables us to share Korean history and culture through a wide range of projects.

Community Service We are proud to be a leader in promoting community service wherever we do business, fostering a culture of volunteer service that is both active and pervasive. Many of our employees are involved in visiting, serving, and supporting the disabled, the elderly, and the orphaned. We have 40 teams of volunteers that regularly put their construction and maintenance skills to work by fixing roofs, restrooms, water heaters, lighting, and other problems for needy households and organizations. And our “Good Will Account” matching grant program doubles contributions employees make to charities and non-profit service organizations. We are also involved in a wide range of partnerships to help make local communities a better place for all. We coordinate with military bases to provide morale and welfare activities for servicemen and women. We help farming villages make the changes that will enable them survive and thrive. We work with schools to ensure that no child

goes hungry at lunchtime. We partner with Habitat for Humanity International, providing technical specialists as well as financial support and manpower to help build decent homes for those in poverty. And we also stand at the ready to help in the event of man-made and natural disasters, providing both equipment and manpower for recovery and restoration projects. Environmental preservation is another area that is dear to us. Since 1995, we have participated in Korea’s “One Company, One Mountain” and “One Company, One Stream” projects as part of our commitment to environmental sustainability.

In the early 1990s, we reviewed 153 history textbooks from around the world acquired through our global network. This led to the July 1991 publishing of “Warped History and Erroneous Facts”, a volume which highlighted the over 300 inaccuracies found during the project. Another historically significant project we undertook during the 1990s was the restoration of the building that housed the Korean provisional government in Shanghai, China from 1919 to 1945 during the nation’s occupation by the Japanese. Completed in 1993, the project has won praise for fostering a spirit of independence, patriotism, and appreciation of Korea’s rich historical heritage. Over the years, we have also sought
