As part of our collective commitment to advance the next generation of Australian leaders, we have come together to create the premier program for Ph.D. candidates with a research focus in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). STEM Ph.D. program overview We are pleased to pilot, a new Program for Ph.D. students in STEM-related disciplines. The Program supports students with part-time employment while completing their research. Through this Program participants will benefit from:    

For the pilot program, Westpac Group and Go8 are inviting a small group of students from Go8 universities to apply for up to eight Program positions commencing in 2017. Westpac and the Go8 share a commitment that participants in the STEM Ph.D. program should attempt to achieve a timely completion of their Ph.D. This means completion within four years Full Time Equivalent working on the Ph.D., including time spent before the commencement of the Westpac contract. We are pleased to invite you to apply for a Program position in the 2017 Pilot Program. Further details of the Program and how to apply are below.

Program employment model The STEM Ph.D. Program will offer up to eight positions commencing in 2017. Successful applicants will receive an offer of employment as follows:      

Four year fixed-term employment contract at Westpac Group Employment is 0.6 Full Time Equivalent in Sydney1 Full time equivalent salary of $100,000 p.a. plus superannuation and benefits. For a three day part-time position, this equates to an annual base salary of $60,000 p.a. Employment commencement date: 6 February 2017 Employment end date: 5 February 2021 During employment, Program participants will complete two, 24 month rotations in two different Westpac Group Business Units, with the second rotation commencing in February 2019.

Program eligibility To be eligible for a Program position in the pilot Program you must meet the following minimum criteria:    

Between 1 and 2 years Full Time Equivalent candidature – including formal confirmation of candidature – for a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in a STEM discipline at a Group of Eight (Go8) University at the time of application Australian or New Zealand citizen or permanent residence status Available to work in Sydney for 0.6 Full Time Equivalent in a part-time employment position Written confirmation from the participant’s University that they will be able to be a part-time employee of Westpac Group at three days per week concurrent with their Ph.D. candidature. E.g. A letter from the candidate’s Ph.D. Supervisor.

Note: A STEM discipline is one that is within the Scope of STEM as defined by the Office of the Chief Scientist in Appendix 1 of its Position Paper dated July 2013. This includes:    

Natural and physical sciences (astronomy and the earth sciences, physics, chemistry, the materials sciences, biology and biomedical science) Mathematics Engineering Technology

Applicants who are enrolled in a non-STEM discipline but their research topic has a clear STEM focus will be considered.

APPLICATION STEPS You will need to complete the following activities on the application site in order to submit your application: 1. Attach your most recent CV 2. Include a list of any research related publications including peer reviewed conference or journal publications, Honours and Masters theses, and research reports 3. Attach a short summary (200 words or less) of your proposed Ph.D. research 4. Answer five short Program eligibility questions

Key dates Key program dates are outlined below. Please note, the dates are non-flexible.   

 

Applications close on 30 September 2016 Applicants will be notified in early October 2016 if their application was successful to move to interview stage Interviews will be conducted in mid-October 2016, and successful applicants will be notified individually with a date and time for their interview. There will only be one round of interviews, in panel format. Interview dates are not flexible and you must be able to attend an interview during the interview period. Offers will be made to successful applicants in early November 2016 There will be a Program launch event at Westpac Group offices at Barangaroo Sydney on 13 December 2016. Successful Program participants will be required to attend.

A pilot means that during the first year of the Program (2017) we will assess and evolve the Program to ensure full benefits of the Program for participants, Group of Eight Universities and Westpac Group. The Program participants will be instrumental in helping evolve the Program to build a sustainable and beneficial program that achieves the goals of all stakeholders.
