Community Development, Parks & Recreation

June is Recreation & Parks Month The Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association (S.P.R.A.), with the support of national and provincial park/recreation associations, promotes June as Recreation & Parks Month. The designation is made to acknowledge the contributions leisure facilities and parks make to the quality of life with Saskatchewan. Each year recreation services and parks throughout the country utilize June to: celebrate the return of summer programming; gather their communities together; recognize volunteers; get residents involved in fun outdoor physical activities; and gain support for the parks and recreation sectors.

Pioneer Ways & Bygone Days The tour book Pioneer Ways & Bygone Days, based on information from the records of the City of Yorkton Archives, provides a close-up look of the old town centre of Yorkton. It was made possible by a grant from the Saskatchewan Council for Archives & Archivists. Yorkton has a strong corporate history since 1882, having been settled under the leadership of the York Farmers’ Colonization Company of Toronto. Once the railway came to the new Yorkton site in 1891, it prospered quickly. This prosperity is evident in the remaining commercial buildings and the stories of the commercial bygone days. Folks are welcome to take the tour or to buy the book for an “arm-chair” visit. Cost - $10.00 including GST. For sale at: City Hall, Western Development Museum, Tourism Yorkton, and Frameworks.

Ravine Ecological Preserve The Ravine Ecological Preserve consist of a 1.7 mile (2.8 km) hiking trail that works its way through grassland, aquatic and aspen parkland habitat. With the help of many dedicated community volunteers, the park’s mandate is to preserve the natural integrity of the site for passive recreational pursuits and ecological education. Along the trail you will want to experience the boardwalk, which crosses over the water. From the boardwalk you will see several species of waterfowl and shorebirds. The boardwalk is a great hit with the kids. Throughout the aspen forest, song birds, mammals, amphibians and reptiles make their home. Plants such as; saskatoon, chokecherry, hazelnut, twining honeysuckle and wood rose all present themselves to the hiker along the trail. At the arboretum, found in the south west corner, you will find species of ornamental trees and shrubs hardy to the Yorkton area. Take one hour out of your day and stroll along the trail and boardwalk. The park’s diversity of plants and animals will delight you. Remember to take nothing but pictures and leave nothing but footprints behind.
