Your Guide to Issues and Events at A.C.E.

August–September 2015

From Our President . . . Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. (I Corinthians 10:31) Any successful ministry to children includes a commitment to God to give the young ones in our care the very best—daily in the Temple. As you know, dedication and commitment are so very important. Christian education that touches hearts for time and eternity requires more than an academically strong curriculum. It must be immersed in the Word of God and its principles. Over the past forty-five years, God has been faithful to guide A.C.E.® in both these areas with a goal of “Reaching the World for Christ . . . One Child at a Time!®” A.C.E. is also committed to you as school staff. The 2015 Christian Educators’ Convention will be held in thirty-one different locations across the United States. Plan for an in-service day and close your school to allow the entire staff to attend this one-day convention. You will return to your ministry revitalized and challenged to serve our Lord and the children more effectively. O magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt His name together. (Psalm 34:3) As you read this Accelerator, you will find many opportunities for enlarging your students’ desire to serve our Lord. Serve the LORD with gladness . . . . (Psalm 100:2) Lead and prepare them to attend Regional and International Student Conventions, to sponsor a BLESS Center, and to minister at the 2016 Service Adventure in Thailand. It is my earnest prayer for each of us to stand before our God and those He has placed in our lives with a determination to say, Here am I, [Lord]. (Exodus 3:4) A servant of Jesus Christ, for the children’s sake and God’s glory, Esther Howard, D.Litt. President 2 Accelerator

When the Literacy Light Bulb Turns On

Accelerated Christian Education® continues to use proven learning methods that have been around for decades.

Illiteracy is a problem that has plagued educators for generations. According to a United States Education Department study released in 2015, an estimated 32 million adults in the United States could not read. This accounts for one in seven Americans. Around the world nearly 16 percent of people over the age of 15 cannot read, according to statistics published by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency. How is it possible that so many students walk away from schools without the ability to read? The United States spends over $15,000 per student on education, more than any other nation. And yet every year, over 1.2 million students drop out of high school in the United States alone. That’s one student every 26 seconds—or 7,000 students a day. The United States, which had some of the highest graduation rates of any developed country, now ranks 22nd. Despite this massive amount of spending, government schools have failed to prevent many students from being discouraged, giving up on education, and dropping out of school. How did these students slip through the cracks? Were they not taught properly, or did they just not learn to read? While educators search for the answers, Accelerated Christian Education has successfully used the centuriesold phonetic system for the last 45 years to help generations of students learn to read. This system has helped turn on the “light bulb of literacy” in the minds of countless children and adults. The experience of learning to read is different for each student. Some catch on early, while others take longer to grasp the concepts. As an educator, embrace this realization and focus on each individual’s ability. A.C.E. offers several programs to help students read. It is important to start with the ABCs with Ace and Christi Pretest, formerly known as the Reading Readiness Test, and Coordination Development Tests to determine the proper placement for beginning students. CEC Dress Code and Information The Christian Educators’ Convention is prayerfully planned to provide in-service training for the staff of all schools using the Accelerated Christian Education curriculum and program. Those attending come from many different denominational backgrounds. In deference and respect for each one in attendance, an appearance standard that reflects our standard has been designed for CEC. In a spirit of Godly submission, please abide by the following standards. •G entlemen: Dress slacks, dress shirts, ties, and dress shoes (no denim jeans)—suits or sport jackets are appropriate. • Ladies: Dresses or suits and blouses (no pants)—skirts and dresses should come to the bottom of the knee or longer when sitting and blouses or jackets should be at the neckline. With a large group of people, it can be difficult to regulate the room temperature to everyone’s satisfaction. If you tend to get cool, you may want to bring an extra sweater or light jacket. Please get plenty of rest the night before and eat a healthy breakfast before arriving for registration. Babies and children will not be permitted in any session. Go to www.aceministries.com/training and click on Christian Educators’ Convention for more details and to preregister your school online.

Making the Most of CEC

Administrators are required to attend the A.C.E. fall Christian Educators’ Convention annually with their school staff. Failure to do so may result in the revocation of any discount granted.

CEC 2014 Comments Educators attending the 2014 sessions around the country had a lot to say about their experiences. Here are some of the reactions from attendees:

“Every workshop we attended seemed tailored to our exact needs.” “It was a blessing to be around Christian men and women who are of like mind. It was encouraging to pray before each session and to feel the presence of the Holy Spirit through prayer and song.” “I really appreciate that your workshops are centered around spiritual and foundational principles because unless these are in place, nothing can be accomplished effectively.” “We are thankful for the staff here at CEC. God truly spoke to our hearts through each speaker.” “Coming to this convention has been so encouraging. It reminded us of why we have a school.” “The presenters were enthusiastic and upbeat.” “I have been coming to CEC for almost 30 years. I always come away with new information and techniques.”

For over forty-five years, Accelerated Christian Education has provided ministry educational training through the Christian Educators’ Convention (CEC). Throughout its history within the United States, over 300,000 educators have attended CEC to receive practical Learning Center tips, valuable leadership training, and personal growth and enrichment. School and church staff attend CEC year after year, enjoying the Learning Center tips and blessings from the Lord.

Remember, the materials fee is only $10 per person with a maximum of $50 per school. This means it will only cost you $50 whether you bring 5 or 25 people! Develop your team through training them.

Count It All JOY www.aceministries.com

My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. James 1:2, 3 Each child is a precious gift from the Lord, but sometimes character flaws, disabilities, or limitations can cloud our perspective. Weariness can set in, and we can lose sight of the miracle of each life. Galatians 6:9 exhorts us, And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. However, daily challenges often make it difficult to see past the dark places to the future blessings down the road. Our families will face many situations, but we must remember that the answer to each situation is found in God’s Word. His strength and peace can carry us through any trial if we will trust Him for the answers. Just knowing that He is always there with us can give us the power we need to move forward. As our children mature, it is important for us to keep a watchful eye on their development. When caught in the early stages, many physical and academic limitations can be dealt with, lessening the adverse effects on future success. Parents are often the ones who initially notice something unusual in the development of their child. Bringing this to the attention of your doctor will help him in assessing your child’s overall progress. However, it can be harmful for parents to hide the truth from those who need the information to work with their child on a daily basis. If your child has been diagnosed with a limitation or disorder, be open Permission is granted by A.C.E. to copy this page.

about it with your child’s pastor or principal. Your child can then get the encouragement and help necessary for him to succeed. By being aware of his limitations, the staff will be able to adjust their approach and meet your child’s needs better. A key factor that you, as a parent, can do to help your child succeed is to be involved! Be your child’s number one advocate. Be sure to attend school events for parents, and take full advantage of conferences with your child’s supervisor. Make sure you understand the information presented, and ask questions if you are unclear on details of your child’s growth. If your child has needs that you do not feel are being met at school, discuss them with his supervisor. Many problems stem from a lack of communication, so be willing to share your concerns openly. Listen in a nondefensive way to the concerns and suggestions the staff may have regarding your child’s progress. When you return home from a conference, when appropriate and after prayer, speak calmly with your child about the things discussed. Have a loving understanding on a daily basis; show your concern by discussing his day and what he is learning. Love to a child is spelled: t‑i‑m‑e! Take the time to show your child that he is a priority in your life, and you will see the results in his attitude and confidence level. Our ultimate goal as parents is to help our children be the very best they can be. The Lord has a special plan for each child. Let’s work together to help your child realize his fullest potential to the glory of God! August–September 2015 7

Christian Education Takes Root in India A.C.E. School of Tomorrow® is playing an important role in spreading Christian education in India. Most schools in India have non-Christian elements and are heavily influenced by Hinduism. Schools using the A.C.E. curriculum have answered many Christian parents’ prayers and are winning souls for Christ. India has schools that have earned Quality and Model Status. Quality Status was received by a church school started by a missionary couple from the Philippines. The other school received Model Status beginning last school year and now has 34 students! Despite raising educational standards in India, schools using the A.C.E. program find it difficult in gaining certification required by many local universities. However, this has not deterred parents who enroll their children by faith instead of sending them to government schools. These students who choose to pursue university enrollment in their home country are in need of prayer. Through the efforts of people in India and around the world, more schools are forming. One school started with the help of an Educational Assistant who has been serving faithfully. The program recruits volunteers from around the globe to help establish schools. Having completed training, two more schools are preparing to use the A.C.E. program in 2016. Yet there is still a great need in India for more schools using the A.C.E. program.

BLESS reaches out to indigent and underprivileged children in countries around the world. Through a 12- to 15-week program, children are taught to read, solve basic math problems, and are introduced to Jesus Christ through God’s Word. In 2012 the BLESS program was tested in India. Based on this test, the School of Tomorrow staff have developed strategic plans on how to present BLESS to the people of India. Please pray that promotional meetings and other efforts will lead churches and Believers in India to establish more schools using the A.C.E. program. Many lives are being greatly impacted. May the Lord continue to bless the work of A.C.E. His Servants 24/7 Squad: Mission Accomplished REQUIREMENTS 1. Be at least 18 years of age and have previous involvement in International Student Convention (ISC). 2. Ineligible to compete as students at ISC.

A special group of young people are members of His Servants 24/7 Squad. They assist A.C.E. staff in making the International Student Convention (ISC) run smoothly each year. In May they completed their mission by working behind the scenes of the 2015 ISC in Las Cruces, New Mexico. The purpose of the 24/7 Squad is to influence others to live for Christ by assisting the Student Convention leadership in the many tasks associated with coordinating ISC. Squad members arrive at ISC prior to registration and remain until after the Awards Ceremony. These individuals help man booths, run errands, set up events, judge competitions, and serve as mascots, ushers, and even security. “They helped make ISC the best they possibly could for the students participating,” said Mr. John Gilbey, who helped coordinate this year’s 24/7 Squad. “They assisted where necessary and helped in any task.” With zeal they worked long days— sometimes from 6 a.m. to midnight. Whenever a need arose, a 24/7 Squad volunteer was there to help. “They need to be flexible,” Mr. Gilbey said. “Many of the volunteers

say that they never realized how much work was involved with ISC.” One minute they might be unpacking supplies for an event, the next they could be called upon to help set up a computer. “I think they have a greater appreciation for what takes place,” Mr. Gilbey said of work that goes into the annual ISC. In addition to helping make ISC be successful, the volunteers also benefit from the experience. “They enjoy being involved with something bigger than themselves,” Mr. Gilbey said. “It is a life-changing experience. They meet new friends, learn to be leaders, and grow in the Lord.” All volunteers are A.C.E. graduates. Many of the 24/7 Squad members have competed as students at ISC in the past and wanted to return the favor. Some have enjoyed ISC so much that they have come back more than five times to serve on the 24/7 Squad. While the 2015 ISC has come to a close, another group of His Servants 24/7 Squad volunteers will want to answer the call of service for next year’s regional and international student conventions.

Character emphasis Content

CHARACTER COUNTS

Have you ever heard someone say “My car is too old” or “I have nothing to wear”? We want new and we want it now! But what if God has another plan? Maybe He is trying to teach us to be content. The above character strip that comes from Science PACE 1015 illustrates the character trait “content.” In this character strip, we see that Ace doesn’t have money to buy ice cream like the other students. Instead of becoming sad, angry, or finding someone to blame, he finds contentment. The character trait “content” is defined by A.C.E. as: Understanding and accepting that God has provided everything that I need for adjusting to circumstances around me. The Bible has many examples of those who were content. John the Baptist showed contentment by humbly preaching repentance of sin while living in the desert clothed in camel hair and eating wild honey and locusts. Abraham was content to let his nephew Lot have first choice of the land and what appeared, at first, to be a better plot. Job, having lost nearly everything, declared . . . the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD. (Job 1:21) And the apostle Paul, though shipwrecked, beaten, thrown into prison, and persecuted, could still say, Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. (Philippians 4:11) The attitude of contentment is not something that comes naturally. It is found only by faith and

trust in God’s beneficent provision. The sinful world promotes materialism as the means and end-all to living a “successful life.” The desire to acquire the material “treasures” of this world rather than heeding the words of Matthew 6:20 to “lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven” has left many disillusioned and broken. Matthew 6:21 continues, For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. God wants our hearts to be content and filled with the abundant blessings He has given us, as I Timothy 6:6 states, But godliness with contentment is great gain. The Christian has many reasons to be content beyond our earthly needs. Hebrews 13:5 states, Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. His eternal presence and salvation is something we could not attain on our own. Every day our students discern the character traits that we display in the Learning Center. Are we setting forth a Godly role model in both the positive and challenging moments? Students tend to emulate their leaders in action and attitude. Are the students exhibiting a spirit of contentment? Do they live the words of I Timothy 6:8, And having food and raiment let us be therewith content. How content are you with what God has given to you and your school? May we strive each day to reflect upon God’s blessings in our lives and display Godly contentment. August–September 2015 15
