Dehydration 101 Dehydration can occur at any age. Despite the name, dehydration does not simply mean the loss of water. Dehydration is excessive loss of body fluid: water and electrolytes. Methods to Prevent Dehydration Nutrient and electrolyte absorption in the small intestine is a complex process regulated by multiple mechanisms at the cellular and molecular level. The small intestine is the major site of nutrient and electrolyte absorption. Nitric Oxide (NO) metabolism plays a critical role in the regulation of this absorption process. NO alters intestinal muscular contractility and mobility as well as water and electrolyte absorption through modulation of mucosal cGMP and cAMP levels. Rehman, in his article in Experimental Biology and Medicine, substantiates the pivotal role Acacia Gum (fiber) plays in this absorption process. It is stated that acacia gum has the ability to scavenge chemically (cellular) generated NO that has diffused into the intestinal lumen and further has the ability to prohibit the production of additional NO by inhibiting nitric oxide synthase (NOS), the mechanism by which NO is generated in the intestine. Thus, the presence of acacia gum (fiber) will increase the absorption of electrolytes and carbohydrates by modulating intestinal activity. It is believed that the presence of acacia gum (fiber) significantly improves the absorption of electrolytes in both the normal and stressed intestine. In other words, recovery is faster.
