First Sunday of lent

Lent in the Year of Mercy The primary pillars of Lent are prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. All of these are intended to turn our hearts back to God and prepare us for the celebration of Christ’s resurrection at Easter. In this Year of Mercy, it is good to take time to review the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy. Our Cathedral community practices these works through various ministries throughout the year.

Christ the King School Christ the King School creates a nurturing, Christ-centered environment based on its Catholic tradition of fostering academic excellence, individual responsibility, spirituality, and growth of the whole child, in order to spread the Good News of Jesus in word and deed.

Tricia Ward, Principal • 404-267-3669 • www.christking.org CKS Peacemakers Each year, Christ the King School recognizes students from each homeroom who have been outstanding role models for initiating just solutions in the classroom and on the playground. This coveted award is very special to students, because the recipients are selected by their peers. To be eligible, students must be honest, thoughtful, loyal, and display a generous spirit. They must live by the virtues taught at CKS and encourage others to be the Lord’s messengers of peace and hope in the world. Congratulations to all those who were recognized as Peacemakers this year.

What is an Active Parishioner? Our parishioners are often asking us to verify that they are an “active practicing Catholic.” The question of parishioner status is important because this question comes up in many circumstances such as 

  



Certification as godparents and sponsors for Baptisms and Confirmation Active parishioner tuition rates in Catholic schools Marriage/Baptism preparation Scheduling of the facilities for services such as Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals Enrolling children in our programs

In practice, Parishioner verification is done by looking equally at three criteria: Registration, Regular Mass Attendance, and Financial and Time Support.

Cullum Owings Scholarship A special part of the Peace and Justice Mass is the presentation of the Cullum Owings Scholarship. Cullum attended CKS from kindergarten through sixth grade and was known for his well-rounded personality, embracing academic, athletic and social interests with balanced energy. He was compassionate, kind to all, and displayed a natural leadership ability inside and outside the classroom. This wonderful young man was fatally injured in a traffic accident, while returning from Thanksgiving break to finish his senior year of college in 2002. Friends of the Owings family established the Cullum Owings Scholarship at CKS to ensure that his spirit and memory remain alive in our community.

If you have any questions regarding the parishioner verification process, please contact Amanda Vergenz at [email protected] Msgr. Frank McNamee encourages you to be an active member of our parish. Your parish – and your own faith life – is enriched and strengthened by the participation of our members!

At the Peace and Justice Mass, Cullum’s scholarship is awarded to a fifth grade girl and a fifth grade boy, who embody Cullum’s wonderful character and who plan to complete the sixth grade at CKS. Congratulations to the 2016 Cullum Owings Scholarship presented to Grace Bradley and Will Fligg. 5
