September 4, 2016 Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time 1883-2016

Prayer of St. Francis de Sales Have no fear for what tomorrow may bring. The same loving God who cares for you today will take care of you tomorrow and every day. God will either shield you from suffering or give you unfailing strength to bear it. Be at peace, then, put aside all anxious thoughts and imaginations. Amen.

WHAT’S IN YOUR HEART? Do you have what it takes to be a disciple? Don’t panic: You don’t have to “hate” your family. Though Jesus’ words sound as strong then as they do now, see them in terms of the rest of what he says in the gospel passage, the big message of which is: Measure your resources before starting on something, like a king contemplating giving battle or a builder sizing up whether he can afford to complete a structure. That means being ready to renounce your possessions and to put your faith ahead of all else—including your family if it came to that, though it probably never will. More certain is the possibility that following Jesus will involve taking up the cross at some point. Are we prepared to make the necessary sacrifices? WHERE WE LIVE, SERVE,

& WALK TOGETHER IN FAITH.

. . . . . . . FROM THE PASTOR . . . . . . . . My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, . . . . There are big doings in Rome this weekend. Pope Francis is . canonizing Blessed Teresa of Kolkata (Calcutta) on Sunday, . . September 4. She will now be formally known as St. Teresa of . Kolkata, but I have a feeling most of us will remember and refer .. to her always as Mother Teresa, much like most still refer to St. .. . Pio as Padre Pio. And St. John Paul II and St. John XXVIII. . . Whatever we call them, they are Saints of our day, our life. . time… and models of holiness for us all. Starting this weekend . we will include a quote from our newest saint each week. She is . . infinitely quotable and her thoughts profoundly simple. . . . Last Saturday, I had the privilege of officiating my “baby broth- .. er’s” (he’s not going to like me calling him this!) 25th wedding .. anniversary renewal of vows. It was a beautiful day as we gath- . . . ered in their backyard with friends and families in attendance. . With their three boys flanking them, Roger and Mary restated . . their vows to love and honor and cherish. The “look of love” . . that was evident in their eyes took me back 25 years to their . . wedding day. Thank God that look is still the same, more . knowing and experienced, but still the same. Much like the con- .. stant consistent love that God has for each one of us, their love .. . has been patient and kind, humble and quick to forgive. . . There was celebration and some tears as we remembered those .. of our family who were no longer physically with us. The wed- .. . ding video brought us back to big eyeglasses and ‘Jersey girl . hair,’ when we were all so much younger (and thinner!). Life is . . . a journey and I am so glad we were able to enjoy another stop . along the way. . . . Enjoy what’s left of the weekend and God bless us all as anoth- .. . er school year begins! . . . Fr. Scott . . . . HELP WANTED… Looking for part-time .. . Maintenance/Custodian to work at Donovan . . Catholic High School on weekends (Friday, . . Saturday & Sunday). For detailed information . . and to apply, please call Dawn Watson at . . . 732-349-8801 x2404. . .

END OF MONTH 4: Developing Baby

“I can suck my thumb!” Spiritual Adoption Program Your spiritually adopted baby has hit many milestones in the 2nd trimester! The baby is now 6-1/2 to 7 inches long and weighs about 6 to 7 ounces. Baby is developing reflexes and may even be sucking his thumb! Tooth buds are also developing. Fingers and toes are well defined. Gender is identifiable. Although recognizably human in appearance, the baby would not be able to survive outside the mother’s body. Pray that the Lord of Life might move the heart of her mother to give her the most precious gift of all...THE GIFT OF LIFE!

“Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I love you very much. I beg you to spare the life of [baby’s name] the unborn baby that I have spiritually adopted who is in danger of abortion.” - Prayer of Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen

Our Youth Choir will begin its practices in September. We are changing our practice time to a new day — Wednesdays at 4:305:30pm. Our first rehearsal will begin September 28 in the church. New members are invited to attend our first rehearsal. Please let Gina and Claire know if your child is interested to sing with the Youth Choir. There will be approximately 3 rehearsals per month and the Youth Choir will sing at mass twice per month. A fall schedule will be given out at the first rehearsal. For more info, email Gina at [email protected]

Muchas gracias, Merci beaucoup, Molte grazie, Thank You So Very, Very Much! Words simply cannot express the heartfelt gratitude for the outpouring of love shown through your donations to the Social Concerns Sunday Supper Ministry. Your generosity has ensured that dinners will continue for those in need and for those who hunger for companionship throughout the coming year. May God bless you all. Thank you.

St. Joseph’s Church Volunteers Our parishioners volunteer, as well as receive services from Caregiver Volunteers of Central Jersey (CVCJ). They perform Corporal Works of Mercy in our community a few minutes a week or a few hours a month, to those who are homebound, socially isolated, living with chronic illness, and have Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. BUT THEY NEED HELP. Representatives will be at our church after all Masses Sept. 17/18 to answer questions about how YOU too can help to meet the needs of our growing and aging population here in Toms River and to prayerfully ask for your support.

As part of the Diocese’s coverage of this joyful event, this celebration honors the commitment of couples who are living witnesses to the sacrificial love necessary for lifelong, sacramental marriage.

For those couples celebrating a 1st, 25th, 50th (and up!) Wedding Anniversary you are invited to

SPIRITUAL DIRECTION AVAILABLE: Saint Joseph’s is now offering Spiritual Direction on a limited basis. In Spiritual Direction, the trained Director helps directees to become more aware of God in their own life experiences. The director focuses on God’s presence in each one’s life, prayer and communication. Spiritual Direction sessions are not geared to problem solving or counseling, rather, the goal of Spiritual Direction is to gain a deeper relationship with our Lord Jesus. Sessions are conducted one-on-one and are completely confidential. Again, it is not therapy. If you are interested or have questions, please contact: Kathleen O’Connell 914-275-5766, [email protected] or Nancy Mosquera 732-865-1031, [email protected]
