elcome to the 2015 Spring Convention of the Michigan Psychological Association. We’re pleased to announce that our presenter will be Peter A. Lichtenberg, Ph.D., ABPP. He will provide information on current standards of care for treating older adults. The Spring Convention is an excellent opportunity to reconnect with colleagues and network with psychologists from across Michigan. This is also when we take the time to honor psychologists in Michigan who are recipients of the Distinguished Psychologist Award, the Beth Clark Award, and acknowledge the new MPA Fellows. There will be time during the luncheon to find out about the activities of MPA by speaking with Committee Chairs and other committee members. As always, there will be vendors at the Spring Convention offering products and services of value to psychologists. If you’re not already a member of MPA, please talk with any member of the Board of Directors and/or committee members about how to join and become involved with this wonderful organization. Our Featured Speaker Peter A. Lichtenberg, Ph.D., ABPP Peter A. Lichtenberg, Ph.D., ABPP is the Director of The Institute of Gerontology and the Merrill Palmer Skillman Institute. He is also a Professor of Psychology at Wayne State University. He received his bachelor’s degree from Washington University in St. Louis, and his Master’s and doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Purdue University. After his internship he completed a post doctoral fellowship in geriatric neuropsychology at the University of Virginia Medical School where he also became a faculty member. A clinician and researcher throughout his career Dr. Lichtenberg has made contributions to the practice of psychology across a variety of areas including in long term care, in medical rehabilitation with those suffering from late life depression, and age-related dementias. In 1997 he was awarded a Diplomate in Rehabilitation Psychology and in 2013 the Diplomate in Clinical Geropsychology. Dr. Lichtenberg is active in his research on issues related to capacity assessment, late life depression, minority health and aging, dementia and disability. He has written three books and edited three more, and has over 150 peer reviewed publications. His current work is particularly interested in the area of intersection between financial capacity and elder justice; finding ways to balance autonomy and protection for older adults. Last year he published an article on misdiagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease in capacity cases and this year the first nationally representative study on predictors of older adult fraud victims. He recently completed the creation of the Lichtenberg Financial Decision Making Rating Scale, a tool to be used to assess major financial decisions and/or transactions of older adults.

lder adults are the fastest growing segment of the American population and yet most psychologists are not well prepared to begin seeing older adults in their practice. This seminar will cover what psychologists need to know about working with older adults including fundamentals in geropsychological assessment and intervention.

Workshop Objectives Participants will: 1. Learn To apply the new diagnostic criteria for Alzheimer’s disease. 2. Be able to analyze a Person Centered Approach to care. 3. Examine the 5 steps needed in assessing capacity in older adults. 4. Evaluate Dr. Lee Hyer’s integrated assessment and treatment approach. 5. Identify three techniques for detecting early signs of dementia. 6. Examine a new person centered financial decision making rating scale.

The Michigan Psychological Association (MPA) is approved by the American Psychological Association (APA) to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. The MPA maintains the responsibility for the program and its content.
