What is “THE BIBLE” And where did it come from?
“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:” – 2 Tim 3:16
A “Cannon” of 66 Books !
Written by as many as 40 authors
!
Written over a period of almost 2000 years
!
The term, “Canon” comes from the Greek kanon) for “rule” or “standard of measurement.”
!
Old Testament: The Authentic Manuscripts are called The Masoretic Text (MT). According to Tradition, Cannonized by the Council of Jamnia (1st Century A.D.), but probably much earlier.
!
The Authentic New Testament Manuscripts are called Textus Receptus.
The Language of The Bible
! The Old Testament is written in Hebrew (with the
exception of a few verses in Aramaic). ! The New Testament is written in Koine (common)
Ancient Greek. ! Aramaic Was the common language spoken by Christ
and His contemporaries.
The Hebrew Alphabet
The Greek Alphabet (Uppercase)
The Lord’s Prayer in Syriac-Aramaic
Hebrew Pictograms ! Like Hieroglyphs, Chinese and Japanese - Ancient
Hebrew characters were pictograms that that conveyed its meaning through its pictorial resemblance to a physical object. ! It carries a denotation (an explicit, direct meaning) and
a connotation (a suggested secondary meaning).
Paleo-Hebrew (Ancient Hebrew)
Symbolic Meaning
The Hebrew Language “And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech.” (Genesis 11:1) “The Hebrew alphabet is semantic, not just phonetic. Consonantal script: (as in English,“Bldg,” “Blvd,” et al.) Vowels are implied (Masoretes in 9th century develop “pointed” conventions). The Hebrew Language has a vividness, conciseness, and simplicity that also makes it difficult to translate fully. It takes typically twice as many English words to translate Hebrew.” – Chuck Missler
Original Text = Deeper Meaning “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” -
בְֵּראשִׁ֖ית בָָּר֣א אֱֹלהִ֑ים אֵ֥ת הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם וְאֵ֥ת הָאֶָֽרץ Beresheet Bara Elohim et ha-Shamayim et ha-Eretz: Beresheet = In beginning… Bara = Create out of nothing... Elohim = God; plural noun, used as a singular.
Genesis 1:1
The Trinity ! “EL”, written “aleph – lamed”, is usually translated
“God”. It is used as a prefix in many of the revealed Names of God. The Hebrew words ending in“-im” denote plurality. Ex. “Cherubim” is the plural form of “Cherub” ! Thus, the odd, syntactically singular usage of a plural
noun denotes a single God manifest in Three Persons.
Gen. 1:1 (Paleo-Hebrew) בראשית ברא אלהים את השמים ואת הארץ
את Hebrew Equivalent to “Alpha and Omega” Alef -‐ Pictogram for a Ram, a sacrificial animal Tav – A cross
אֵ֥ת Original Word: “eth” Phonetic Spelling: (ayth) Short Definition: “a” a primitive particle, an untranslatable mark of the accusative case. The particle is not grammatically necessary in this sentence. Why is it used here?
A suggested reading: “In the beginning, God [The Trinity, the Alpha and Omega, The Sacrificial Lamb who would go to the Cross] created the heavens and the earth.”
Alpha: Animal Sacrifice “Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.” Gen 3:21 “And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering…And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son.” ~ Gen 22 Note that God DID NOT provide “a Lamb” at this time. He provided “a Ram”. Abraham prophesized of “The Lamb of God”.
Omega: The Cross A foreshadowing of The Cross: “And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.” ~Numbers 21:9 The Serpent represents sin. Brass represents endured judgment [Brass withstands fire]. “…He [Christ] humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross”. Phil 2:8 “Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world!” John 1:29
Pilate’s Sign on The Cross " And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, 'Jesus Of Nazareth The King Of The Jews.' This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin. Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, 'Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews.' Pilate answered. 'What I have written I have written.'" - John 19:19-22 (KJV)
LATIN: “INRI” “Scripsit autem et titulum Pilatus et posuit super crucem erat autem scriptum:
Iesus Nazarenus Rex
Iudaeorum”
Why did this sign make the High Priests so angry???
Hebrew: “YHWH” (“Jehovah”)
YHWH ! This is the Tetragrammaton, the four letter name of God ,
usually pronounced Yahweh. Probably comes from the verb ( הוהhawah) meaning “to exist”. The yud added to the beginning identifies the object of the verb as first person, masculine, singular, imperfect tense or “HE exists”. !
(yod) (heh) (waw) (heh) (YHWH) Ancient Hieroglyph symbols individually mean: “Look, [at] the hand, Look, [at] the nail”, a foreshadowing of Christ!
Hebrew Root Structure “Verbs are formed from 3-letter roots, with forms developed by change of vowels or by adding suffixes or prefixes. The root consonants give Hebrew a semantic backbone and stability not characteristic of Western languages. Verb usage is not characterized by precise definition of tenses; very context dependent. This lends itself to puns and wordplay”. – Chuck Missler An understanding of Hebrew Root Words adds understanding to the meaning of the text.
The Antediluvian Patriarchs Adam Seth Enosh Kenan Mahalalel
Jared Enoch Methuselah Lamech Noah
What can we learn from tedious genealogies?
“And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli, Which was the son of Matthat, which was the son of Levi, which was the son of Melchi, which was the son of Janna, which was the son of Joseph, Which was the son of Mattathias, which was the son of Amos, which was the son of Naum, which was the son of Esli, which was the son of Nagge, Which was the son of Maath, which was the son of Mattathias, which was the son of Semei, which was the son of Joseph, which was the son of Juda, Which was the son of Joanna, which was the son of Rhesa, which was the son of Zorobabel, which was the son of Salathiel, which was the son of Neri, Which was the son of Melchi, which was the son of Addi, which was the son of Cosam, which was the son of Elmodam, which was the son of Er, Which was the son of Jose, which was the son of Eliezer, which was the son of Jorim, which was the son of Matthat, which was the son of Levi, 30Which was the son of Simeon, which was the son of Juda, which was the son of Joseph, which was the son of Jonan, which was the son of Eliakim, Which was the son of Melea, which was the son of Menan, which was the son of Mattatha, which was the son of Nathan, which was the son of David, Which was the son of Jesse, which was the son of Obed, which was the son of Booz, which was the son of Salmon, which was the son of Naasson, Which was the son of Aminadab, which was the son of Aram, which was the son of Esrom, which was the son of Phares, which was the son of Juda, Which was the son of Jacob, which was the son of Isaac, which was the son of Abraham, which was the son of Thara, which was the son of Nachor, Which was the son of Saruch, which was the son of Ragau, which was the son of Phalec, which was the son of Heber, which was the son of Sala, Which was the son of Cainan, which was the son of Arphaxad, which was the son of Sem, which was the son of Noe, which was the son of Lamech, Which was the son of Mathusala, which was the son of Enoch, which was the son of Jared, which was the son of Maleleel, which was the son of Cainan, Which was the son of Enos, which was the son of Seth, which was the son of Adam, which was the son of God.” – Luke 3: 23 - 38
Adam אָדָ֑ם Adomah, means “man.” 1st Adam “Son of God” (Luke 4:38) A figure (type) of the Last Adam (Rom 5:14; 2 Cor 5:21) The Bride of both paid for by a wound in the side.
Seth שֵֽׁת׃ Shet “Seth” means “appointed.” Eve said, “For God hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.” Genesis 4:25
Enosh אֱנֹֽושׁ׃ E·no·vsh Means “mortal,” “frail,” or “miserable.” It is from the root “anash”, “to be incurable”.
Kenan קֵינָֽן׃ Kei·nan Can mean “sorrow,” “dirge,” or “elegy.” (The precise denotation is somewhat elusive; some study aids unfortunately presume that Kenan is synonymous with “Cainan.”) Balaam, looking down from the heights of Moab, uses a pun upon the name of the Kenites when he prophesies their destruction. (Num 24:21, 23).
Mahalalel מַֽהֲלַלְאֵֽל׃ Ma·ha·lal·'el Means “blessed” or “praise”; and El, the name for God = “The Blessed God.”
Jared (Yared) יָֽרֶד Ya·red From the verb yaradh, meaning “shall come down.” Some authorities suggest that this might be an allusion to the “Sons of God” who “came down” to corrupt the daughters of men, resulting in the Nephilim of Genesis 6.
Enoch ְחֲנֹ֔וך Cha·no·vch Means “commencement,” or “teaching.” “And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints, To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.” Jude 14, 15
Methuselah מְתוּשֶׁ֔לַח Me·tu·she·lach muth, a root that means “death”; shalach, which means “to bring,” or “to send forth.” = “His death shall bring.”
Lamech ְלֶ֕מֶך Le·mech A root still evident today in our own English word, “lament” or “lamentation” = “Despairing.”
Noah ַנֹ֖ח No·ach is derived from nacham, “to bring relief” or“comfort,” = “Comfort, or Rest.”
The Genealogy of Genesis 5 Adam - Man (is) Seth - Appointed Enosh - Mortal Kenan - Sorrow; (but) Mahalalel - The Blessed God Jared - Shall come down Enoch - Teaching Methuselah - His death shall bring Lamech - The Despairing Noah - Comfort, Rest
“Man is appointed mortal sorrow, but the blessed God shall come down, teaching that His death shall bring the despairing comfort and rest!”
The Greek Language ! Alexander The Great’s world empire made Hellenistic
Greek the common (Koine) language of the ancient world. “Greek verbs have five aspects: tense, mood, voice, person, and number and will convey far more than a lexicographical definition.” – C.M. A very concise language, lending itself well intellectual and philosophical discourse.
The Attributes of Scripture ! Authority ! Inerrancy and Infallibility ! Clarity- Integrated Design ! Necessity ! Sufficiency
Authority “All Scripture is given by inspiration [God-breathed] of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.” - 2 Timothy 3:16 Every letter of every word in the original text was perfectly transmitted to Man by the Creator of the universe.
Doctrine of Verbal Plenary Preservation ! Verbal = Every Word ! Plenary = The Scripture as a complete and intact whole ! Every letter and every Word is infallibly preserved by
Almighty God.
Inerrancy and Infallibility “Inerrancy: that the Bible contains neither errors of fact (material errors) nor internal contradictions (formal errors). Infallibility: the subjective consequence of divine inspiration; that is, it is reliable and trustworthy to all who turn to it in search of God’s truth.” – Chuck Missler
Clarity- Integrated Design “The
New Testament is in the Old Testament concealed;
the Old Testament is in the New Testament revealed. Anticipatory macrocodes demonstrate an origin from outside the time domain: history detailed in advance.” - Chuck Missler God clearly reveals His Word to individuals who prayerfully seek understanding. Greater inquiry reveals deeper Truths.
Isaiah 46: 9,10 ! “Remember the former things of old: for I
am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me, Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure.”
Necessity ! For Knowledge of the Gospel (Romans 10: 13-17) ! For living a Spiritual Life (Matt 4:4) ! For specific knowledge of God’s Will, not discounting that
conviction by the Holy Spirit offers some grasp of right and wrong.
! God’s existence is evident without The Bible. He reveals
Himself in His Creation and through The Holy Spirit.
Sufficiency ! Scripture contains the complete Divine message for all
people, in all historical stages of the revealed plan of Salvation. It is now complete. The Cannon is Closed. It contains all we need to know for Salvation, Faithful Service and obedience to God’s Will.
Imperfect Transmission ! Only the original manuscripts or “autographs” should be
thought of as without error. The potential for minor errors is inherent in the transmission, copying and translation of the original texts. Differences in culture, historical understanding and understanding of rhetorical devices may cause the modern reader a more limited understanding of the text.
! Less that 1% of Scripture is under competent dispute and
no doctrine is affected by the questioned text.
The Hebrew Bible (O.T.)
The Tanakh ! Torah - (Penteteuch), 5 Books of Moses !
!
Nevi’im - The Prophets—“Former Prophets”: Joshua, Judges,
Samuel, and Kings; “Latter Prophets”: Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, The Book of the Twelve Prophets;
Ketuvim - The Writings: Psalms, Proverbs, and Job; The Five
Scrolls: Song of Songs, Ruth, Lamentations, Ecclesiastes, and Esther; and, lastly, Daniel, Ezra-Nehemiah, and Chronicles.
How The O.T. Text Was Preserved “And it came to pass, when Moses had made an end of writing the words of this law in a book, until they were finished, that Moses commanded the Levites, which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD. saying, Take this book of the law, and put it in the side of the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, that it may be there for a witness against thee.” (Deut.31:24-26).
Hebrew Priests Apparently charged with preserving and copying O.T. scrolls. During the Babylonian Captivity, Daniel, Ezekiel and others no doubt took copies with them into exile.
The Peshitta ! 100 - 200 A.D. Syriac Aramaic translation of the O.T. ! N.T. adapted by 5th Century A.D. ! “Peshitta” means “straight, simple, or, easy to be

!
Scribes called Amoraim (Expositors) later made additional copies and also produced the Talmud, a commentary on the Mishna.
!
In the 6th Century, the Masoretes (Traditionalists) perfected scribal techniques.
The Masoretes (7th-11th Cent. A.D.) !

Textus Receptus - The Received Text !
Textus Receptus is the generic term for all editions of the Green N.T. which follow early printed editions of Erasmus
! The term was first used to refer to the edition of the
Greek New Testament published by the Elzevirs in 1633. The preface to this edition, written by Daniel Heinsius, includes the Latin phrase "textum ... receptum".
“Textus Receptus” ! The term has been expanded to include numerous
editions of the Greek New Testament which come from the same Byzantine textual family representing the majority of the handwritten Greek manuscripts before the 16th century.
Various Editions ! There were approximately thirty distinct editions of the
Textus Receptus made over the years. Each differs slightly from the others. There have been over 500 printings.
! the work of Stunica as published in the Complutensian
Polyglot (printed in 1514 but not circulated until 1522);
! the Erasmus editions of 1516, 1519, 1522, 1527 and
1535;
! the Colinæus edition of 1534 which was made from
the editions of Erasmus and the Complutensian Polyglot.
! the Stephens editions (produced by Robert Estienne,
who is also called Stephanus or Stephens) of 1546, 1549, 1550 and 1551; ! the nine editions of Theodore Beza, an associate of
John Calvin, produced between 1565 and 1604, with a tenth published posthumously in 1611;
!
Elzevir editions of 1624, 1633 (the edition known for coining the phrase "Textus Receptus") and 1641.
No Significant Variations ! variations include spelling, accents and breathing
marks, word order and other minor kinds of differences.
! "The editions of Stephens, Beza and the Elzevirs all
present substantially the same text, and the variations are not of great significance and rarely affect the sense” - Trinitarian Bible Society
! In the latter part of the 19th century, F. H. A. Scrivener
produced an edition of the Greek New Testament which reflects the Textus Receptus underlying the English Authorised Version. This edition was published posthumously in 1894.
! F. H. A. Scrivener (1813-1891) attempted to reproduce
as exactly as possible the Greek text which underlies the Authorised Version of 1611. However, the AV was not translated from any one printed edition of the Greek text. The AV translators relied heavily upon the work of William Tyndale and other editions of the English Bible.
Scrivener / Stephanus Differences ! There are approximately 190 differences between the
Scrivener text and the Beza 1598. There are 283 differences between the Scrivener text and the Stephanus 1550. These differences are minor, and pale into insignificance when compared with the approximately 6,000 differences -- many of which are quite substantial -- between the Critical Text and the Textus Receptus.

Wescott & Hort
The translators upon whose work all modern Bible translations are based. These men knew Hebrew and Greek but they did not know Jesus Christ.
The primary translators of the “New Translations” were two NONBELIEVERS named Westcott and Hort. These men denied the Divinity and resurrection of Christ and they dabbled in the occult. Their text added 306 Greek words, omitted 2987 and deleted 20 verses entirely.
Westcott and Hort DENIED: a) the doctrine of the inspiration of Scripture, b) the Genesis record of the Creation and the Fall of man, c) the Deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, His eternal pre-existence and Godhead, His Messiahship, and His sinlessness, d) the substitutionary atonement of Christ and redemption by His blood, e) the bodily resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, f) the Second Coming of Christ, g) the doctrine of Eternal Life, h) the reality of Heaven and Hell, i) the personality of the Devil.
Westcott and Hort BELIEVED IN: a) the inherent goodness and perfectibility of man, b) the Darwinian theory of Evolution, c) the Universal Fatherhood of God, d) the ultimate salvation of all men, e) the efficacy of water baptism for Regeneration.
