What is the best thing about being a father? ‘Seeing the love of your child,’ was the immediate response of a friend. Receiving love is his delight. Of course, you think we all want to receive love but it is often not as easy as we think or would like. Ultimately, receiving love means we have to take what the other gives and find delight in what and how they give. We have to relinquish control. Celebrating days like ‘Father’s Day’ can teach us so much about this discipline of receiving love. A child gives according to their heart and their understanding and, in practical terms, the gift can be quite useless to the parent but, in real terms, it can be the most wonderful expression of the deep love. When children give in love, they moisten up our hearts, stretch them wide and make us even more capable of receiving love….in those tricky relationships with adults. God delights in receiving our love. Too easily, we can wonder ‘what can I do for God?’, ‘what have I to offer?’ Well… nothing, in practical terms but in real terms, the terms of the heart, God desires our love as if each of us were the beloved only child. So how can we offer our love to God, if we have nothing to give? We can delight is what we have received, our life, our loves, our family. We can take time to be still and bask in God’s love which is what prayer really is about. Loving God, as we celebrate Father’s Day this coming week, let me realise the love which you lavish on me. Show me how I can lavish my love on you in return. I ask this in Jesus’ name confident that you will hear me. Sr Kym Harris osb

Acting Assistant Principal Religious Education – Term 4 Mrs Rheanna Starr has been appointed to the role of Acting Assistant Principal Religious Education for term four this year. Mrs Starr’s classroom teaching days will remain as normal. I once again thank Carmel Byrne for the tremendous work and support she has provided in this role this year, and look forward to Rheanna joining the St Joseph’s Wandal Leadership Team for the remainder of the school year. Mini Vinnie’s Festival Meeting – Miss Byrne has asked all Mini Vinnie’s students to register their interest in attending the annual St Vincent de Paul Festival which will be held at St Vincent’s Church on 14th September. It would be wonderful to have significant student attendance at this event. Please ensure all forms are returned to Miss Byrne as soon as possible.

Congratulations to Kristen, Sam and Harper Jones on the birth of their new baby son and brother last Friday, Hudson Vinnie. Mum and baby are both doing well. Welcome to Kurt Balinggan and his family who join our school community this week. We are sure that Kurt will be made to feel very welcome by our wonderful community and settle in quickly. Father’s Day Stall – A reminder that all students are invited to bring in a gift ($5-$10 value) for our Father’s Day stall. On Friday, students may bring in $5 and purchase a gift for the significant father figure in their life. Sports Shirts – There have been some queries regarding the correct day to wear the sports uniform shirt. The current practise is that Sports shirts are to be worn on PE days (Tuesdays) only. The formal dress uniform must be worn every other day. The school board will discuss this arrangement, however until (and if) changes are made this is the expectation for all students from Years One-Seven. I have been in touch with our uniform suppliers and have been informed that our new sports shirt uniform will be in stock and available for purchase from October. A reminder that there will be a phase-in transition period for these new shirts, until they become mandatory for the 2016 school year. Some initial dates have been set for our senior leaders for 2014 on which the students can wear their school leader shirts. These dates have been communicated by class teachers to students. Pie and Footy Night – A Reminder that the Broncos v Storm will be shown on the school’s ‘Big’ screen on Friday 5th September. Commencing at 6.30 p.m. come along and enjoy an ‘easy’ dinner and the game with our Wandal school community. For catering purposes please return the bottom portion of this newsletter if no already done so. ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE TIMES: Staff have been concerned lately about the number of children arriving far too early to school. Similarly, we have had cases of children still remaining at school until after 4.00pm. Please re-familiarise yourselves with the following excerpt from our Parent Handbook: Before School: Children should not arrive at school prior to 8.15 a.m. unless approval has been granted by the principal. If it is

unavoidable that a child arrives at school prior to 8.15 a.m., they must remain seated outside their classroom. Morning playground duty commences at 8.15 a.m. At this time children move to the basketball court area where they are permitted to ‘play’, although equipment cannot be used. After School: Parents are requested to ensure that all children leave the grounds by 3.20 p.m. Should there be a difficulty in arranging for your child to be collected by this time, please phone the school as soon as possible on the day. Each afternoon there are three supervised areas where parents are able to collect their children:  Herbert Street – children wait near the entrance gate.  Rundle Street – children wait at the end of the basketball court near the gate for buses. This is a Bus Zone only.  Church Carpark Other Variations: If, for any reason, a child is late for school, is required to leave early, or is to be absent for part of the day, the class teacher must be informed and the child ‘signed out’ in the Sign Out Register which is located on the front counter in the administration office. The Cathedral College Transition Program for 2015 – All students attending TCC next year will soon receive communication from TCC inviting them to attend an Orientation program on Tuesday 14th October. Students will be transported to and from the college by the TCC bus on the day. High Tea prizes - We still have some prizes from our recent High tea awaiting collection in the school office. Please check the list below for you name and arrange collection at your earliest convenience: Joyce Uzangi Kellie Cole A Manderson T Fraser S Halliday

FINANCE - Introducing BPAY Meet the staff – Helen Kennedy I have been a Teacher’s Assistant here at St Joseph’s for Four years now, and enjoy my job immensely. I mainly work with the Prep children and find this so rewarding, watching them grow and learning new things every day. I have two children Lauren in Year 11 at TCC and Brielle in Year Seven here at Joey’s. Both of my children have attended St Joseph’s since the very beginning of their school years.

This is another facility we now offer to parents to manage school fees. The BPAY logo will be printed on all statements and this will appear on Term Four fees. However, if you would like to utilise this service now, please contact me and I will generate your statement and step you through the process. School fees are now overdue, and reminder letters have been posted. These are selfgenerated letters through our accounting system and reflect your balance as of the 1st September. St Joseph’s Wandal now offers a variety of payment options, including payment plans. Please contact me should you require assistance in setting up or managing a payment plan.

When I’m not here at school, I am very involved with hockey as a player and a Coach. I have played hockey since I was six years old, and have represented Queensland as a Masters Player four times. When I’m not a hockey, you can find me at home catching up on my housework and spending time with my family.

With thanks, Kathy Fishburn (Finance Secretary)

Corinne Archer I moved here from Brisbane in April to be apart of the amazing teaching team here at St Joseph's Wandal. I am slowly adapting to the "small town, country lifestyle" even though my students continually tell me I am not actually in the country. I love to run around with the students and share with them my love for sport. When I am not at school I enjoy shopping, movies, high tea's and antipasto platters.

“The

Angelus” - Jean-François Millet And the Word was made Flesh: And dwelt among us.

The Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary: And she conceived of the Holy Spirit.

Hail Mary full of Grace, the Lord is with thee Blessed art Thou among women And Blessed is the fruit of Thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now And at the hour of our death …. Amen Behold the handmaid of the Lord: Let it be done to me according to your Word.

Hail Mary ….

Hail Mary….

Pray for us O Holy Mother of God That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Let us pray: Pour forth, we beseech you O Lord, your grace into our hearts that we, to whom the incarnation of Christ, Your Son, was made known by the message of an angel, may we, by His Passion and Cross be brought to the glory of His Resurrection, Through the same Christ our Lord Amen

Dear Parents and members of the St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School community, Wandal As you know for the past few months Mrs Kellie Jenkinson has been Acting Principal of St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, Wandal. After an interview process involving Fr John Hogan from your Parish and representatives from your School Board and Parents & Friends Association, I am pleased to advise that Kellie has now been appointed ongoing Principal of St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, Wandal. It has been very heartening over the past couple of months to receive such positive feedback from members of your school community with respect to the faith centred, enthusiastic, compassionate and committed leadership that Kellie has brought to the role of Principal. Even after such a short time as Acting Principal, Kellie very much sees herself as part of the St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, Wandal community and she is both pleased and excited to be given the opportunity to continue as Principal at the school from 2015. As I said at the time of her being appointed Acting Principal, Kellie is a person of great faith and she will be a very active contributor to parish life and will continue to foster close relationships between parish and school. Hopefully by now you know that Kellie is a real team player with excellent communication skills. She also relates very well to parents, students, teachers, other staff and all members of the school community. I know that Kellie, her husband Grant and their children April, Cooper and Bayden feel a very special part of the Wandal community. Also I once again sincerely thank Miss Cindy O’Neill for all she has contributed to the community of St Joseph’s during her time as your school Principal. Cindy is presently enjoying some well deserved leave prior to continuing her work with Catholic Education in 2015. In closing, I thank all members of the wonderful community that is St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, Wandal school community for your ongoing support of Catholic Education. God bless
