What is it? This program is a collaboration with New Mexico Department of Agriculture (NMDA) and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Market News to collect information on prices of local food items for sale at farmers’ markets and food hubs around the state. Its purpose is to help promote locally grown foods and the producers who supply it by providing accurate price information in specific market areas. It also helps the Farm Service Agency to better provide local food producers with crop disaster assistance should they need it. This project stands to benefit multiple parties: • Current market vendors will be able to compare their own prices to those of other current vendors, both in their local market and others statewide • Potential market vendors will be further encouraged to sell at markets after getting a sense of how to best price their products • Current and potential customers will have an idea of what to pay for local produce in their area and can identify special deals
How will it be done? We are seeking volunteers around the state to help us collect price data at individual markets throughout New Mexico. Farmers’ market managers, market volunteers, producers, and patrons can all assist in this effort. We will offer instructions on this easy reporting process as well as provide reporting forms, reporting schedules, and supporting materials. The information gathered will be made available through the NMDA website with frequent updates on price information and product availability. Hello Farmers’ Market Managers and Supporters, NMDA is working to gather basic price data from farmers’ markets around New Mexico and would love your assistance with this effort. The more price information we receive, the better we can serve producers and consumers of local foods in the state. We aim to collect price information for fresh fruits, vegetables, eggs, and meat typically found at New Mexico farmers’ markets.We also want to look at price variations of fresh products around the state to assist farmers and ranchers in identifying emerging market opportunities, such as niche produce items. Identifying price variations will also assist current market vendors with accurate pricing information for their area. Market price reports will be available through a link on the NMDA’s website. www.nmda.nmsu.edu REQUIREMENTS FOR REPORTING PRICES • The focus is on New Mexico-grown raw fruits and vegetables, eggs, and meat. We are not gathering information for value-added, processed, or prepared foods at this time. • Products must be truly “local” (according to area market standards) - not resold items • For statistical purposes, markets must have at least five produce vendors, with a minimum of three vendors selling a specific item (i.e. if at least three vendors are selling cucumbers, you may report prices) • Products labeled “organic” must possess documentation of organic certification at their booth at time of sale • Do not report on prices for “seconds” (especially common for fruits, potatoes, and tomatoes) GENERAL PROCEDURES Market managers, vendors, market volunteers, board members, retired vendors, dedicated market “regulars,” and high school or college students are all examples of potential reporters who can assist in this process. Although reporting is voluntary, we aim for accurate data to best serve producers and consumers; and reporting should be kept simple and easy to conduct. Data reporters will receive blank pricing forms and a seasonal produce list via e-mail and should take these with them to market. Aim to collect prices for at least 5 items on the list and up to 20 if available or motivated. You may include item varieties if you wish to do so (i.e. golden delicious apples, gala apples, instead of just “apples”).

The person or persons working to collect prices should try to arrive early in the market day before vendors have lowered prices for quick sale. Walk through the market and take a look at what is generally available. When you have an idea of product availability, you may enter the prices on the form provided. You do not need to involve vendors unless prices are not displayed (in which case you will need to ask them for prices) or if you need items weighed. Please be respectful of vendors’ time, especially if you are not making a purchase. PRICING Please provide the predominant price, average price, or price range for the various products on the list. We prefer a range of prices from highest to lowest to reflect the variation among product prices within a given market. UNITS Please use standard measurable units for weight and volume as much as possible. In order to have accurate data, we need meaningful units; so try to avoid vague terms such as “per box” or “per bag.” Typical units for weight are in ounces or pounds; and volumes are often by quart, pint, bushel, etc. Try to estimate the size of the “container” or “bunch” for which an item is being sold. Have it weighed if you are uncertain of an approximation. Pricing a product “per item” is acceptable, just be sure to note how many are sold at a price (i.e. $1.00 each or $1.00/dozen). RETURNING COMPLETED REPORTS When the survey is complete, enter data into the blank forms and e-mail your report back to Genevieve or mail the handwritten form to the address provided. Reports can be sent as an e-mail attachment or copied and pasted into the body of the email. Please return completed reports by e-mail no later than 5 pm Monday so reports can be published by Friday.
