Genital Psoriasis is a special branch of Inverse Psoriasis or Flexural Psoriasis. Genital Psoriasis is also called Groin Psoriasis. Genital Psoriasis due to areas affected generally becomes the cause of stress and depression among the patients. It is important that it should be dealt carefully. Before we go into further details about its causes and treatment available, lets understand Inverse Psoriasis. What is Inverse Psoriasis? Inverse Psoriasis also known as Flexural Psoriasis. It develops in the armpits, under the breast, groin, between the buttocks, around the genital and in other skin folds. It appears as red shiny skin without the usual silver scaling and it may feel tight and sore especially at the edges where it meets normal skin. Genital Psoriasis is particularly subject to irritation from rubbing and sweating because of its location and it is more common and troublesome in overweight people. It can cause discomfort and difficulties with sexual relations.

Causes and Triggers
As we explained in detail in our article Psoriasis - Causes and Triggers and PsA - Causes and Treatment the route cause of psoriasis is toxins. These toxins are generated as usual in intestine and get disposed off through the normal channels of our body. When these channels gets blocked or toxins generation goes excessive then these toxins starts accumulating and expanding to different parts of body.
They get localized in and around genital and groin area.
Stress acts as a trigger and they appear as psoriasis in these effected areas.
Generally genital psoriasis appears after psoriasis has affected other areas of the body. Some times it can appear in genital parts only.

Redness and irritation in genital can also be there due to contact dermatitis. A biopsy may be required to correctly diagnose and separate psoriasis from other conditions.
Available Treatments As is the case of other forms of Psoriasis, there is no permanent treatment available for genital psoriasis in modern medical science. All the treatments prescribed by dermatologists simply treat symptoms of genital psoriasis and reduce the redness, itching and irritation.
Since steroids have the potential to thin the skin, only low strength steroids or non steroidal lotions such as Protopic or Elidel are prescribed.
Vitamin D based compounds such as calcipotriene (Dovonex) and retinoids such as Tarazotene are generally avoided for genital psoriasis as they can cause irritation.
Ultravoilet light treatments are recommended at low intensity as genital parts are very sensitive and strong UV treatments or excessive UV treatments can lead to skin cancer at genital areas.
Male patients in particular, if going for UV treatments must protect penis and scrotum.
Using cotton undergarments, soft towels and use of condoms and lubricants during intercourse are some of the recommendations which can reduce trigger supports and can keep genital psoriasis and irritation calm.
