Preventive check-ups are provided for at regular intervals during pregnancy. They are part of the health insurers’ range of services and do not have to be paid extra.

The midwife can perform all preventive check-ups during pregnancy except for ultrasonic screens. She also issues the Mutterpass (maternity card). The costs are borne by the health insurance.

The visiting parental assistants provide social counselling and support in direct dealings with the authorities so as to create a good start for the baby.

The U1 (1st child check-up) and mostly also the U2 (2nd child check-up) are mostly done by the birth centre. Some paediatrician’s surgerys also offer home visits. The subsequent child check-ups (U3 – U9) are carried out at the paediatrician’s surgery’s surgery.

After giving birth Once your child is born you will certainly want to dedicate yourself entirely to your new family member. Some direct visits to the authorities as well as the visit to a paediatrician’s surgery, however, still have to be done after your baby is born. Apply for household help / family care

If it is not possible to carry on the household (e.g. due to health problems) and there is no other person living in the household who could carry on the household, a household help can be applied for at the health insurance.

Apply for reimbursement for contra­ ceptives

Persons on low incomes (e.g. recipients of ALG II, SGB XII, AsylbwL, BaföG, MiniJob) may apply for reimbursement for the pill, IUD, condoms or the “morningafter“ pill.
