What others are saying… In School Field Trip- HIGH FIVE Training

Living and Working with Children (HPW3C) and Parenting (HPC3O) A few years ago my son, now 19 came home from City of Toronto- ARC training, excited about what he had learned and recommending that I use it for my family studies classes. The training had been HIGH FIVE. This year, while teaching a stacked HPW3C/HPC3O class and wanting to make as many real work connections to an in school course as possible, I decided to find out whether the training could be offered at a high school. The training was one of two options for part of the course culminating project. My department budget subsidized the cost but each student was required to pay $30, therefore, it was not something I could make mandatory. The majority of my students selected the training and all of them were engaged and motivated during the session. Rather than having the students leave the area for breaks I brought healthy snacks and we ordered pizza for lunch. …The premise of the training- Promoting healthy development of children is definitely appropriate for the courses. As I have already mentioned, all students thoroughly enjoyed the day. The training complemented the course material, confirming the relevance of the course. The certification they have earned is something that many have used on their applications for summer jobs. (I realize the benefit of running this course during semester one to enable students to have the certification for the summer job search that begins in the early new year.) What others are saying… In School Field Trip- HIGH FIVE Training

What you thought overall of the delivery of HIGH FIVE as a training and the value to your school and students’ The training was very good. Although there was a lot to cover in one day, the trainer made it engaging and practical. It was good that he works with the Town of Ajax. His stories and examples were from the work place and made it relevant for the students.

How you integrated the training and within which program . The group of trainees were students taking HPW3C – Living and Working with Children, with most of those also being enrolled in the SHSM program.

How it aligned with the learning objectives/course expectations you were trying to accomplish. Training fits well with the HPW3C expectations (in particular expectations related to Interactions with Children), and serves as a certification required for SHSM program. Many of the non SHSM students needed the certification to work for the Town of Markham this summer.
