OVERVIEW What Have We Learned About Noninvasive Ventilation in the Past 20 Years? AARC Current Topics in Respiratory Care 2015 – Program 7

Description Twenty years ago, noninvasive ventilation was introduced into acute care practice. This therapy is now widely used in the acute care setting. This lecture will address the evolution of noninvasive ventilation over the past 20 years, presented by an individual who has made much academic contribution to this field.

Objectives At the end of the lecture the learner will be able to: § Discuss the history of noninvasive ventilation § Identify the evidence supporting the use of noninvasive ventilation for patients with COPD § Identify the evidence supporting the use of noninvasive ventilation for patients with pulmonary edema § Identify the evidence supporting the use of noninvasive ventilation for patients with hypoxemic respiratory failure

Lecturer Laurent Brochard, MD Full Professor, Clinician Scientist St. Michael’s Hospital Interdepartmental Division Director for Critical Care University of Toronto Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Pulmonary edema has not been shown to be responsive to NIV. o True o False 4. There is a significant difference in the effect of CPAP versus BiPAP for patients with cardiogenic pulmonary edema. o True o False 5. NIV is not a treatment for pulmonary edema; it is a support or bridge for the patient to receive good medical therapy. o True o False 6. Data indicates that NIV for acute respiratory failure produces positive outcomes, including shorter length of ICU stay, fewer complications, and improved survival rates. o True o False 7. NIV success rates in patients with hypoxemic respiratory failure may be improved by initiating NIV early in the disease process. o True o False 8.
