What Every American Should Know About Islam Our ministry at Fortress of Faith is to expose the truth concerning Islam and to rescue Muslims from the hold Islam has on them. We want to bring them to a saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ. Today we want to look at what we should know about Islam so you can help us accomplish these goals. If we want to reach Muslims for Christ we must get them into the Bible and, as Christians, we must be able to explain it to Muslims.  We have some good news coming out of Iran. There is a satellite called Sat7 that beams the Gospel into Iran. An app has been made available through this satellite that allows people to download the Bible. We just got word that there have been 60,000 downloads of this app. Iran does everything it can to stop the Bible from getting to its  people. They can control physical Bibles and the Internet, but they can't control this satellite. God is using technology to get His Word into this closed country.

Muhammad If we are going to understand Islam we have to start with its roots, and the root of Islam is Muhammad. Unlike Christianity where God was revealed to and through many people, in Islam Muhammad is the only one to whom Allah has revealed himself. He was in an cave and received some sort of a vision from a jinn. This was the beginning of the Qur'an. The word jinn means a spirit. It could be an angel or a demon. In the Sira, which is the biography of Muhammad, we learn that at first Muhammad was not sure if the vision was from an angel or a demon. He said: “Never shall the Quraish say of me poet or possessed. I shall go to the top of the mountain and cast myself off and find rest” The Quraish were the tribe of Mecca, where Muhammad was born. Muhammad originally thought it was a demon and he planned to commit suicide. It is important that we understand this because all of the “revelations” found in the Qur'an come from this spirit. Later his wife persuaded Muhammad that it was an angel and not a demon. Islam teaches that Muhammad is the final prophet. It teaches that Allah gave revelation to the Jews and the Christians and they both perverted it. Muhammad was given his revelation to clear things up for the final time. Do you know of a prophet from the Bible that was so confused by the revelation from God that wanted to kill himself? Did they have to be convinced by others that they were hearing from God? This should tell us that the jinn was not an angel from God. It is sad that 1.7 billion people in this world are putting their trust in a man who didn't even know from whom he received his revelations. This is just on of the reasons we are so passionate about exposing Islam.

The Scriptures of Islam There are two sources of scripture for Muslims. There is, of course, the Qur'an, but there is also the Sunna. It is probable that 98% of Americans have never heard of the Sunna. Most of us have heard of the Qur'an, but what is it? It is the revelation of Allah, through the jinn, to Muhammad. It is supposed to be in perfect Arabic even though the earliest manuscripts have non-Arabic words in them. There is a book called “The Qur'an Dilemma,” which goes through the contradictions and other issues in the Qur'an. The second source of scripture in Islam is called the Sunna, which means “the practice.” What does it teach Muslims to practice? It teaches them to practice what Muhammad did. Within the Sunna there is the Sira, which is the biography of Muhammad, and thousands of Hadith, which are the actions and teachings of Muhammad. When there is any question or lack of understanding on what the Qur'an says, they are to look to the Sunna to find the proper understanding. This concept is foreign to Christians because we don't have an external source which is equal to the Bible. For Muslims, the Sunna is equal to the Qur'an because Muhammad is taught to be the perfect man and what ever he did was in line with what the Qur'an says.

There is one other source we know of. This is the Sharia, their sacred law. This is found in “The Reliance of the Traveller.” The easiest way to remember the difference between the the Qur'an and the Sunna is that the Qur'an is the words of their god, Allah, and the Sunna are the words and acts of Muhammad, their prophet. The Sunna has more to say than the Qur'an. Apparently the Prophet had more to say the Allah. There are 50,000 Hadith which are incorporated into 9 volumes.

The Difference Between The Sunni and the Shia Muslims The two major sects within Islam are the Sunni Muslims and the Shia Muslims. Sunni Muslims are by far the majority of Muslims. They comprise about 85% of the Muslim population in the world. There are only three Muslim countries that are predominately Shia Muslims. Iran is the largest of these, then there is Lebanon and Syria. The major difference has to do with the successors to Muhammad. Shia Muslims believe that the proper successor to Muhammad must be a blood relative of Muhammad. As I said, there are 50,000 Hadith. The Shia Muslims reject any of them that are not directly attributed to Muhammad. This is the major difference between the two sects. There is also a dispute over about 14 verses within the Qur'an. At the end of the day, we are working with the same crowd. Both Sunni and Shia are working toward the same goal. Both want to establish the law of Allah, the Sharia, around the world. They are not divided on the major issues. In both groups you have fundamentalists and nominal Muslims. The fundamentalists will be the militant terrorists. There are Shia terrorist groups and Sunni terrorist groups. Because there are more Sunni, there are more Sunni terrorist groups. Shahram, coming from Iran, was a Shia Muslim. His family, however, was part of the nominal, or cultural, Muslims. The leaders in Iran are fundamentalist Muslims. They are called Twelvers because they believe that the 12th imam, for whom they are waiting, will be the Islamic messiah. The word “Sunni” comes from the idea of the law. Shia comes from follower. The Shia want to be followers of Muhammad. The bottom line is that both sects agree on the major issues within Islam.

Is Islam A Religion Like Christianity? We know that only a small part of the Islamic law deals with the religious aspects. One of the most well known parts is the 5 pillars of Islam. Let's start there. The first pillar is the Shahada. This is their creed and their salvation prayer. When a person converts to Islam he has to say the Shahada with belief in the presence of 2 Muslims in Arabic. Here is the English: There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is his prophet. The whole foundation of Islam is based upon this declaration.  If this is said publicly, in the presence of 2 Muslims, technically, you become a Muslim. This is why we are so concerned when we see public schools having the children recited the Shahada and using it in writing exercises. This is not a minor thing, it is the statement that makes one a Muslim.  The next pillar is the Salat, the prayers or formal worship in Islam. In the Sunna it says they are to pray 5 times a day while the Qur'an says they are to pray 3 times a day. They pray toward Mecca while bowing down on their prayer rugs. The Slat must be in Arabic.  This is really interesting since only about 15% of the Muslims in the world are Arabs and speak Arabic. They just recite prayers like a parrot in a language they don't understand.  In their services the Qur'an is read in Arabic. It is similar to traditional Catholicism where the mass is conducted in Latin and the people repeat things in Latin without knowing what they are saying.  Their reason for this is to keep the people ignorant. It requires the people to trust their religious leaders to tell them the truth.  The third pillar of Islam is fasting. This deals mostly with Ramadan, the 30 day annual fast in June or July. This doesn't mean they don't eat for 30 days, they just don't eat during daylight hours. When the sun goes down they can eat whatever they want and however much they want.  The   fourth   pillar   is   the   Hajj.   This   is   a   commandment   for   every   Muslim,   once   in   his   lifetime,   to pilgrimage to Mecca. You have certainly seen pictures of Muslims walking around a black building called the Kaaba in Mecca. If possible, they are to be there for at least 30 days.  If you follow Fortress of Faith you know that Muslims have no hope of salvation outside of martyrdom for Allah. The second best hope is found in the Hajj. If they can get to the holy corner of the Kaaba and kiss the black stone that is there, they may receive salvation. This is why we see millions of Muslims in Mecca at the time of the Hajj. The fifth pillar is the Zakat or alms giving.  Two and a half percent of their income has to go back to the cause of Islam. Some of it is to feed the Muslim poor, not nonMuslims, and some of it goes to advance the cause of Islam.  These are the five pillars of Islam. As I said in the beginning, Islam does have a religious component, but the largest component of Islam is the governing part. The best place to see this is in the Sharia law

book, the Reliance of the Traveller. (Lest you think I keep misspelling traveler, the name of the book uses “traveller.”) This book is a great tool to expose Islam for what it is. In this book the first 300 or so pages deal with the issue religion while the next 400 pages or so deal with government. It covers every aspect   of   life.   Islam   is   far   more   than   just   a   religion.   Christian   principles   have   an   effect   on   our government   because   our   world   view   will   effect   this,   but   it   does   not   prescribe   a   specific   form   of government. The Sharia is so detailed that it even tells how we are supposed to go to the bathroom. Do we really need a book to tell us how to do this?

Jihad, The 6th Pillar of Islam About 700 years after Muhammad, the Islamic community came together something like the Catholics and their various counsels. In these counsels their doctrine and dogma were solidified. There were 5 schools of thought within Islam. All of the leaders came together to hammer out their differences and come up with a standard system. They agreed upon 75% and in hammering out the rest they came up with what is called the Reliance of the Traveller. It is the authoritative statement of Islamic law.  Many call jihad the 6th pillar of Islam. Here is the definition of jihad from the Reliance of the Traveller: Jihad means to struggle against nonMuslims and is etymologically derived from the word  mujahadah signifying warfare to establish the religion.  This is quoted verbatim from the Reliance of the Traveller. On the same page that defines jihad it gives us verses from the Qur'an and the Hadith to back up this definition. This is why we rely so much on the Sharia law book to defend what we say. They can't say we are just making this up or taking things out of context because our source is their law book.  Notice that the first thing it says is that jihad is a struggle against nonMuslims. Secondly it comes from a word meaning to conduct warfare to advance the religion. Most of you have heard of the Muhajideen. These are not freedom fighters, they are fighters fighting for the advancement of the kingdom of Allah.  The Sharia law book defines who the nonMuslims are. It calls them the aldimmi which is were we get the word dimmitude. If Islam is in control they will put Jews and Christians under dimmitude, which is a form of slavery.  The Sharia law book says there is the greater and the lesser jihad. The greater jihad is the spiritual jihad, the struggle against sin. It is called the greater jihad because it will always be there.

The lesser jihad is warfare against nonMuslims. The reason it is called the lesser jihad is that they believe this will end when Islam controls the world. The lesser jihad includes the literal warfare, but it also has other forms. One we see a lot of today is cultural jihad where they work to change the culture from within.  How do we know that the warfare is not just spiritual warfare? We go back to the Sunna, the practice. Because Muhammad literally killed nonMuslim, Christians and Jews, and his followers did the same, we know that this is a real part of jihad.  In the Sharia law book, jihad, in both forms, is commanded for every Muslim. It doesn't matter if they are practicing Muslims or not, this is what Sharia law prescribes for them to do.  Jihad is both personal and communal. For example, if someone leaves Islam and becomes an apostate, he is to be killed. Any Muslim can do the killing and the entire community gets credit for it.  The Reliance of the Traveller also says that jihad can be done physically or by your property. If you are too old to fight you can give of your property or money to advance jihad. Here are some other forms of jihad; jihad of the pen or the word, jihad of immigration, jihad of population growth (having lots of babies), etc. Jihad is not fighting in selfdefense. Muhammad led in more than 60 military campaigns, and in all but 2 he was the aggressor. The Qur'an says that as long as there is unbelief the warfare is to continue. Sharia is based upon the Islamic scriptures. Every law in the Sharia law book is there because of what Allah said in the Qur'an and what their Prophet said or did in the Sunna.  You know what something is by what it does. We know what Islam is because we have 1,400 years of history to look at what it has done. What it is doing today is the same as what it has done in the past.  Why do they do it? Because this is what the Qur'an says and what their Prophet did. Muslims are told to emulate Muhammad, just as Christians are told to emulate Jesus Christ. If Muhammad killed non Muslim, the faithful Muslim wants to do the same. If Muhammad commanded the killing of apostates, those who leave Islam, a faithful Muslim will do the same. If Muhammad had sex slaves, then faithful Muslims will do the same. Do you get the idea?

Abrogation Abrogation is a key doctrine of Islam. This doctrine refutes the idea that Islam is a peaceful religion. Muhammad claims that he got different verses and various times. When he was in Mecca he received

verses where he was to get along with nonMuslims. When he moved to Median the tone changed to use the sword to advance Islam.  We  must ask the  question, which is  it? The  verses  contradicted  one another.  His  answer was  the doctrine of abrogation. This doctrine says that Allah changed his mind and therefore the later verses supersede the earlier ones. Listen to what the Qur'an says: Sura 2:106: Whatever communications we abrogate, or cause to be forgotten, we bring one  better than it, or like it. Do you not know that Allah has power over all things? Allah says he can change his mind if he wants to.  One thing that we need to remember is that no one received revelation from Allah but Muhammad. There is no way to verify what he says. What is really striking is that when he left Mecca and went to Medina  things  changed.  He  became  more  offensive,  started  amassing  wealth  and  men.  He  started raiding caravans and going after his enemies. He later incited his followers when he returned to Mecca to actually kill those who spoke against him and his religion. He broke a 10 year treaty with Mecca as soon as he had the power to do so. He ordered the poets who wrote negatively about him to be killed. This is where it became slander worthy of death to defame the Prophet. What is really suspect is that, according to him, and him alone, the verses started to change, and they are the justification of his behavior. It is almost like Allah was Muhammad's sock puppet, used to justify anything he wanted to do.  The Qur'an does teach, in the early verses, that there is no compulsion in religion. Listen to Sura 2:256: There shall be no compulsion in [acceptance of] the religion. The right course has become clear  from the wrong. So whoever disbelieves in Taghut and believes in Allah has grasped the most  trustworthy handhold with no break in it. And Allah is Hearing and Knowing. Many will use this verse to tell us that Islam does not require us to become Muslims. The problem with this is that this verse was abrogated by passages like Sura 9 where Muslims are commanded to fight nonMuslims until they either repent or come into demmitude, a kind of slavery.  How do we know this for sure? We know because this is what Muhammad did.  In the earlier passages of the Qur'an it was peaceful. Muhammad actually borrowed a lot of the Bible. When he was kicked out of Mecca because his own people didn't want him as a prophet, he went to Medina where he was also rejected as a prophet by the 4 Jewish tribes that lived there. Don't you think it is a little convenient for him to get the revelation to kill unbelievers at this particular time?  The moderate or reformed Muslims try to only preach the peaceful verses. I guess they are practicing abrogation also, but in reverse. When they do this they are, in effect, nullifying Muhammad. There is no way of reforming Islam without nullifying the Prophet. Without Muhammad there is no Islam. This is why Islam cannot be reformed.
