what does

MTI stand

for?

What does MTI stand for? That is one of the most common questions people ask us. MTI stands for Marine Technologies International. Quite the mouth full, right? But thanks to the miracle of the three letter acronym, Marine Technologies International became MTI very early on. From the beginning of the company outside of Boston in 1991, MTI was founded with the main purpose of building life jackets for paddlesports. For a long time paddlesports pretty much just meant canoeing, whitewater kayaking, and rafting. Today, the word “paddlesports” encompasses just about anything that can float and be moved in the water using a paddle. Have you seen people driving around with a surf board strapped to their roof rack, yet you’re miles from the ocean? It’s more than likely a Standup Paddle Board (SUP) which is powered by what looks like an extra-long canoe paddle. Yep. SUP is Paddlesports, and if you are outside of the surf zone the law requires a PFD. MTI makes one of the best USCG approved life jackets for SUP. Check out the new slim shape FLUID 2.0 packs – enhanced performance and comfort raising the bar on inflatable belt pack PFDs.

ANCE Improved PERFORdM el Updated & Cascade Mo

Yes, if it’s powered by the paddle, MTI makes a life jacket for it. So what’s up with the new MARINER LINE? Well, life jackets designed to perform for paddlesports are perfect for the small boat sailor, too. The kind of near shore sailor who is hanging their butt over the rails, ducking under the boom, trimming and easing the sails, and feathering the tiller; the kind of sailor who knows that the chance of capsizing and having to take a swim is a real possibility. Like paddlers, they are not afraid to get wet sometimes. They understand that its part of the thrill and challenge of the sport, and more than likely to happen. So we took four of our best vests and gave them a performance makeover — streamlining pockets, adding safety and trim details and inventing the BIGHT KEEPER© — a handy place to stash a loop of line right on the front of your jacket. Smart. Just like wearing a life jacket when you boat. We believe that if we can keep pushing our life jacket designs to a higher level, more people will choose to wear their PFD not because the law says you should, but because it’s the smart thing to do. With an MTI jacket, we make it easy to just WEAR IT. That really is what MTI stands for: Life Jackets for people who love to play in human powered small boats. Don’t be afraid to get wet sometimes. It’s part of the fun! Lili & Gordon Colby Team MTI Plympton, MA

* A note about BUOYANCY:

2014 New Series for

BUOYANCY is the upward force we need to stay afloat in the water, and is measured by weight in (lb). Our bodies are mostly water, so most adults only need an extra 7 to 12 lb of buoyancy to keep their heads above water. All adult MTI models exceed the required minimum buoyancy for an adult Flotation Aid (15 lb 8 oz.), but they do not all fit the same. It is important to try on the jacket to make sure it fits snugly. Zip or clip it up and tighten all straps. Ideally, test it in shallow water or have someone pull up on the shoulder straps if you are in the store. Snugness of the jacket, body shape, lung size, clothing, and whether the water is rough or calm all play a part in staying on top. Also the more physically fit you are the more “lift” you may need. We list Minimum Buoyancy (Min Buoyancy) in the specifications for each model because we know the jacket you will wear has at least that much buoyancy. The Design Buoyancy shows the intended or designed buoyancy and is often a range because it is subject to size, foam type, and production variation. Keep in mind that no LIFE JACKET will work unless you wear it. MTI deliberately offers a wide choice of styles so you can find the perfect life jacket, the one that you will wear.

Red Cordura®/Blue Ripstop

PUTTING THE FLOTATION UNDER THE DOG • Supports the natural swim angle • 90% of the floatation is in the water under the chest & neck • 4 points of adjustment for fit • Reinforced grab handles & leash attachment point • Pup-proof Cordura® & Ripstop fabric with reflective panels Like humans, some dogs are better swimmers than others. And like all swimmers, they will eventually tire. Even a good swimmer might be disoriented from the shock of falling in the water. Most pet life jackets are designed to keep the animal in a horizontal swimming position. The UnderDOG is different. By moving 90% of the effective buoyancy under the chest and neck, the vest is designed to allow a more natural swim angle with the hind legs lower than the front. Even though MTI builds the UNDERDOG out of the same USCG approved materials as for humans, life jackets for animals are not subject to any regulatory standards regarding buoyancy or size. Since dogs come in a variety of breeds, body types and coat thicknesses, always test before use. • Tighten all straps securely • Grab both handles when lifting dog out of water • Test in shallow water before regular boating use Sizes: XS (2-12 lbslb), S (12-24 lbs), M (24-60 lbs), L (60-90 lbs), XL (90-120 lbs) MSRP: $50

mti like[s] TH E RED LADIES STORY The PFDivas of Rafting

Left to right: Heather Byrne, Julie Sutton, Jennifer Hodgkiss, Cristin Zimmer, Jennifer Cook, Tana Deklevar.

What’s not to LIKE about the Red Lady Women’s Raft Team?!? Six dedicated female athletes whose passion for raft racing lead them not only to win last year’s U.S. Rafting Association National competition at the Royal Gorge Whitewater Festival, but also brought them to New Zealand to compete at the 2013 World Rafting Championships. Representing the USA, they beat Japan’s intensely competitive women’s rafting team in an exciting head-to-head race to take 3rd in that category, and finish 7th overall.

Founded in 2011, the women hail mostly from the Gunnison and the Arkansas Valley in Colorado. They are not only skilled river runners and former guides on the Colorado, Salmon, Gauley, Arkansas, and Lochsaw rivers, they are a group of women following their other passions in life. Mothers, artists, engineers, dancers, outdoor enthusiasts all with a common goal: they love to move a raft precisely through the toughest rapids and do it faster than anyone else. They embody the competitive spirit and hope to increase the awareness and participation of women in whitewater raft racing, and serve as positive female role models. This year’s national raft racing competition is scheduled for May 2–4 on the Salmon River in California. World championships will be held Aug 28–Sep 7 in Brazil. The best PFD is the one you will wear. Life jacket, life vest, Personal Flotation Device (PFD) — whatever you call it, it only works if you wear it! Did you know that nearly 70% of all drownings involving canoes, kayaks, or rafts might have been avoided if the victim had been wearing a life jacket? It wasn’t so long ago that when you’d ask someone to wear a life jacket, they would roll their eyes and say “I can swim.” Most boaters found life jackets cumbersome and chose not to wear them. But oh, how times have changed! The good news is that the life jackets of today are stylish, comfortable, and very wearable. We feel that it’s our mission at MTI to continually work to improve a PFD’s fit, features, and fashion appeal — while keeping them affordable — so that it will be second nature to you to put one on whenever you go boating.

Tips to Taking Care of Your Life Jacket • Don’t alter your lifejacket. • Don’t put heavy objects on it or use for a kneeling pad or boat fender. • Inspect for wear & tear and test in water annually. • Rinse in fresh water after use. • Drip dry thoroughly before stowing in a well ventilated place. • Do not dry clean! The solvents and heat can disintegrate the foam. F OR IN FLATABLE PFD S : • Always check to make sure the indicator point shows GREEN before boating. RED means your jacket is not armed. • When not in use, remove the cylinder. • Check all components for dirt, corrosion, or punctures.

MTI is proud to support:

A quick guide to help make sense of the current US Coast Guard regulations Offshore Lifejacket Type I: Designed for extended survival in rough, open water. It usually will turn an unconscious person face up. Think “Titanic.”

Near Shore Buoyant Vest Type II: This “classic” PFD for adults and children is for calm inland water where there is chance of fast rescue. But they’re not very comfortable. Think “the geeky jacket I had to wear canoeing at summer camp in 1979.”

Flotation Aid Type III: Bingo! This Type is the “Paddler’s Choice” because they are generally considered the most comfortable. For use in calm water where there is a good chance of fast rescue since they will generally not turn an unconscious person face-up. While we want you to wear it, you are “USCG legal” by just having it accessible in the boat with you.

Throwable Device Type IV: These are designed to be thrown to a person in the water — boat cushions, ring buoys, and horseshoe buoys. They are not designed to be worn and must be supplemented by a wearable PFD. Think “nautical decoration” at the yacht club.

Special Use Device Type V: This is the most confusing category for most people. “Special Use” PFDs include commercial whitewater rafting vests, vests with rescue harnesses, work vests, deck suits, and hybrid inflatables for restricted use. Basically, it’s anything that didn’t fit the requirements for being neatly classified as a Type I, II, or III, but still offers good buoyancy aid IF used under the conditions outlined on the USCG stamp inside the jacket. In most cases for paddlesports, the user MUST wear the jacket for it to be legal. Be sure to READ the USCG instructions sewn or printed on the device.

Inflatable Life Jackets: These rely on inflatable chambers

that provide buoyancy when inflated by a CO2 cylinder. Uninflated, they are less bulky than foam jackets. The specific type is determined by characteristics such as its amount of buoyancy, its in-water performance and its type of inflation mechanism. Our MTI Helios Inflatable and Fluid Belt Pack are TYPE III.
