*Many people believe that miracles can only be

performed by God because only God is outside time and space, and therefore not limited by the laws of nature. KEY IDEA: God is Transcendent (Remember Mrs C walking on the table?!)

* If people perform miracles, then most religious believers think it is because God is working through them. Muslims accept the miracles of Jesus but they believe that it was God working through Jesus, and not Jesus himself, who performed them.

*

*Explain what is meant by describing a miracle as an act of God.

Examples of MIRACLES found in SCRIPTURE (Holy Books)

S

The holy book of Islam is called the Qur’an. It is the DIRECT word of Allah (God). An example of a miracle in the Qur'an is Mary (Maryam) receiving news that she is pregnant with Jesus (Isa). She said: ‘My Lord! How can I have a son when no man has touched me?’ He said, ‘God thus creates what He wills: To have anything done When He has decreed a matter He has only to say to it “Be” and it is!’ Qur’an 3:47 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0YZ2j6GYp1Y&feature=fvsr Miracles of Jesus trailer BBC http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6fn5onCZYRU&feature=related 5 loaves and 2 fish feed 5000!

Examples of MIRACLES found in Religious Traditions (stories that have been told and are thought to be true) Miracles in Buddhism are mainly linked to the traditions associated with the Buddha.

The Buddha tames an elephant The Buddha’s cousin, Devadatta, was jealous of the Buddha and tried on many occasions to kill him. One day, Devadatta released a fierce and dangerous elephant, Nelagiri, to trample the Buddha. The crazed elephant ran into the town towards the Buddha. A frightened woman accidentally dropped the baby in the path of the elephant. As the animal was about to trample the child, the Buddha calmly touched the elephant’s forehead. The elephant stopped and became calm. It then knelt down before the Buddha. © R Calvert, Colton Hills Community School

Examples of MIRACLES found from Personal Experience.

EP

People are most convinced of the existence of miracles by extraordinary events that they experience or see for themselves. One of the ways in which people have such an experience is through faith healing. Faith healing is an attempt to cure people or improve health through spiritual means. In some religions, there are acts of worship that include faith healing, or it may be that believers go on pilgrimage to sacred places in the hope of a cure e.g. LOURDES in France.

Examples of MIRACLES from History

H

Miracles linked to the FOUNDERS of Religions are called Miracles from History. They SUPPORT teachings found in the holy books. These miracles happened in the PAST after the holy book was written and that’s why they are called miracles from history!

Miracles associated with Varanasi Varanasi is one of the most important places of pilgrimage for Hindus. It is where the God Shiva is supposed to have lived, and has been a centre of a religious teaching for centuries. Hindus enter the river Ganges at the site and many hope when they bathe in the water that their sins will be miraculously washed away. Other Hindus bathe in the Ganges in the hope of miracle cures.
