Wetherby Park Edible Forest Aerial
2/24/2015 Designed By: Fred Meyer and Iowa City Residents
Scale: 1" = 30'
Notes 1. Asparagus Alley: Walkways through feathery asparagus. 2. The Lookout: Highest point in the park. Location of a small gazebo. 3. Understory Herbs: Part-shade-loving (medicinal) herbs are nestled under existing trees. 4. Materials Depot: Mulch and other materials are placed uphill to ease distribution. Shrubs provide some screening. 5. Entryway: Blackberry covered arbors at north and south sidewalks invite park visitors while thorns discourage climbing kids. "Currant Events" kiosk and signs describe where to find ripe edibles. 6. Outdoor Play: Area with buried stumps, logs and boulders gives children a place to play and improve balance skills. 7. Buffer: A 6' buffer along sidewalks help protect plants from dogs and snow plows.
8. 9. 10. 11. 12. 13. 14.
Sink and Tool Storage: Work table, sink, and grill allow food to be prepared. Storage shed or box provides access to tools. Gathering Area: Shaded area for picnics, presentations, and food processing. Compost Areas: Screened compost and brush piles are distributed throughout the landscape for sticks, seedy weeds, and rotten fruit. Flagstones: Large slabs of flagstone throughout the area faciliate circulation without turfgrass. Paths: Grass paths are 5' wide and lined with limestone to prevent grass from creeping into growing areas. Strawberry Fields: Large patches of hardy, everbearing strawberries. The Brambles: Raspberries on wire trellises.
