Welcome to Volunteer Orientation Waugh Chapel Elementary School September 16, 2016

Outcomes Our purpose for today is: To discuss the protocol for volunteering at Waugh Chapel Elementary School in order to provide a safe, nurturing, learning environment for our children.

Code of Ethics • I understand that all information concerning children, teachers, and the school is confidential and should remain in the school setting. • I shall maintain the dignity necessary to gain the respect of students and set a good example at all times.

• I will show high regard for each child by being courteous, impartial and fair. • I will respect those with whom I work. • I will not impose my religious or political views upon students. • I understand that I will work under the supervision of one or more staff members.

Philosophy for Volunteer Programs The Board of Education of AACPS is committed to ensuring a strong home-school-community partnership, and to promote and increase effective and comprehensive involvement practices. We recognize that engaging parents and the community in the program is essential to improved academic success for students. We also recognize that parent, student, and community volunteer involvement in the schools increase the support of the schools by the community and add to the total school program.

Responsibilities • Your role is to support children, teachers, and programs • Respect teachers’ responsibilities and schedules • Abide by established safety and security procedures

Volunteer Procedures • Orientation • Sign –In/Sign Out * Keep track of home hours • ID Badges/Stickers • Child Abuse/Harassment Video • Work Areas • Teachers’ Lounge • Copier (Intermediate hallway only) • Telephone use • Small Children

Child Abuse/Harassment Video All volunteers are required to watch the Child Abuse/Harassment video. Please email [email protected] if you need to watch the video and do not have access to the video at home.

Chaperone/Background Checks • In order to be unsupervised with students, i.e., fieldtrip chaperones, escorting students in hallway (pictures/vision & hearing screening), and working with students outside of classroom you must have been background checked during the past two years.

Volunteer Opportunities Classroom Volunteers • Each classroom and/or grade level has their own specific needs • Your child’s teacher will receive a copy of the Volunteer Information Forms. They will contact you when they need assistance in the classroom. • Room Parent Coordinators will be given the list of parent emails. They will contact you through Sign Up Genius, letters, or emails for parties and special events.

Book Fair Volunteers – The Book Fair is December 2th – 9th

– Volunteers are needed to set up the fair, run the cash register, help children find books and final clean up on the last day of the fair.

Media Assistant

– Volunteers are needed daily to shelve books, assist your child’s class in locating certain books and labeling books. Sign up to volunteer when your child is in Media!

Special Events • Volunteers are needed to assist staff, as well as, supervise students moving to and from their classrooms. • Vision & Hearing Screening (September 13th & October 6th) • Pictures (October 11th & Make-ups November 30th) • Grandparents & Special Friends Day (November 18th)

PE Helpers Field day in the Spring is in need of LOTS of parent volunteers. We will contact our volunteers in the spring.

Watch D.O.G.S. • Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) is the father involvement initiative of the National Center for Fathering that organizes fathers and father figures in order to provide positive male role models for students. • Contact Kim Patterson, guidance counselor – [email protected] Information packets are available in the office.
