Are you looking for a Solar PV option that will provide the greatest amount of ‘future proof versatility’ and something that can be optimised for achieving the best return on investment for your home or business?

Welcome to the world of combining Solar PV with smart inverters…. Due to rising energy prices, more and more Australians are turning to solar power advantages to help make running their households or businesses more affordable. But with changes to the solar feedin tariff and the introduction expensive ‘time of use’ tariffs in some areas, it may no longer makes financial sense to sell any of your power back to the grid, so what do we do with the excess energy?

Installing a Solar PV system today with some ‘future proof versatility’ – what does this mean? If you install a smart inverter and some batteries you can store your excess solar energy during the day instead of exporting into the grid with low feed in tariffs and then you can use this stored power to offset some of your night-time usage, using solar power at night, sounds interesting doesn’t it?

What is a ‘Smart Inverter’? A Smart Inverter is an inverter than can independently control the flow of power depending on a few different variables – some of these include; •

what load you have running at any point in time

how much solar power you are generating

what size network approval you have from your utility

what day of the week it is, what time of day it is

what your peak, shoulder and off-peak tariffs are

Why are all of these variable important? These variables ultimately govern how you use your power, when you use your power and ultimately what your power bills will end up costing you, when you can measure and control some of these variables you can manage your power bills more effectively.

What are the benefits of installing a Smart Inverter and batteries for energy storage? •

Reduced power bills and reliance on the grid.

Emergency backup power in the case of grid failure / supply interruption.

Improved power quality supply to your household

The ability to use solar power at night during peak tariff times.

Increased control of your energy production and consumption.

The possibility to move to complete energy independence having the ability to transition to a completely off-grid set-up

What if I already have a grid connect solar PV system, is it too late? No, not at all, you can retro-fit smart inverters to an existing PV system but there are some rules to follow with this so you should contact your local Infinity Solar office and they can walk you through the process that is relative to you and your situation because each state and territory differs slightly and each power utility company has a different process to follow.

I am thinking of installing a solar PV system, what should I consider? If you are thinking of purchasing a solar PV system there is a number of ways you can proceed depending on your situation and your location – you can build up to energy independence gradually over time or you can jump straight in and install a smart Solar PV / hybrid system from scratch.

How can I gradually build up to a smart Solar PV Hybrid System? The most important building blocks of a smart Solar PV hybrid system is starting with good quality Solar PV panels and a grid connect inverter that is compatible with ‘smart inverters’.

HYBRID READY SOLAR PV SYSTEM We’ll install your system with quality solar PV panels and a grid connect inverter that is ready to connect with batteries in the future, so you add the next stage of the ‘plug and play’ system when the price of electricity reaches its peak or when you are ready to invest further to optimise your system. Being Hybrid ready now allows you to

take advantage of self-consuming your solar PV generated power whilst still being able to access any relevant feed-in tariff schemes if applicable. This first step does not let any of your solar power generation go to waste, but you’ve future proofed your system and put flexibility as a priority in this ever changing electricity market.

ADDING BATTERY STORAGE FOR BACKUP POWER Step two involves adding a smart inverter and small battery backup bank to your existing solar PV system. This system gives you an added feature of an emergency backup supply (from batteries) should you lose the main grid power supply at any point in time. The amount of power that can be delivered in emergency situations depends on the battery storage size but this can be optimised depending

on your situation i.e. essential and non-essential loads circuitry. The introduction of the smart inverter also allows you to tune up and optimise your feed-in tariff if applicable, your solar PV size can be upgraded at this time also if applicable and possible for your situation – in this scenario the batteries would only be cycled in the event of a mains supply interruption.

HYBRID POWER CYCLING DAILY This system is perfect for properties that already have a grid connected solar power system on any lucrative solar feed in tariff (FIT) scheme, or any client that is exposed to large variances within their standard electricity tariffs through ‘time of use’ or expensive peak price exposure. This type of system can also allow a client to store solar PV generated power with the aim to offset a greater proportion of their own self-generated power for instances where they are limited to zero-export by the networks. This type of hybrid system involves carefully upgrading the size of the battery banks in line with the amount of power that needs to be cycled through the batteries on a daily basis. You may also be able to increase the solar PV size at this time also depending on your situation and location.

This system allows additional PV generated power to be diverted into battery storage in the day-time hours as opposed to it being exported to the grid for little or nil economic benefit and allows you to build an energy bank of your own to draw down on when the sun goes down to avoid being exposed to expensive peak power pricing on the grid. This type of system could also be used to optimise loads in the day-time to assist the amount of power that can be exported to the grid, the options are endless and all can be customised to your situation. This system also offers emergency backup power in the event of a grid failure but would allow a larger amount of loads to be supplied from the larger battery bank.

FULL ENERGY INDEPENDENCE Install a larger solar power system capable of supplying all of your energy needs on a daily basis but instead of selling or exporting the excess kiloWatt hours during the day, you can divert this energy into batteries to cover your overnight needs. Sometimes this makes more sense from a financial point of view if little or no feed in tariff is offered by the utility / retailer or it is too expensive to connect to the grid. This type of system means that your general daily use of kwh’s is expected to be covered by the PV system on a daily basis and regular daily load shifting occurs to minimise the amount of power you need to buy from the main grid (if it is available). This solution is the next revolution for solar power in the suburbs and is a far more convenient and financially flexible system than relying on government handouts / feed-in tariffs if you missed the boat with these. You can counteract rising power prices and take back control of your power bill by generating the power yourself. This type of system may still be exposed to variations in weather but you will still have the grid as back-up if needed and if you have a large enough solar PV system, you are fully energy independent irrespective of inclement weather and could actually separate yourself from the grid all together. This has to be carefully thought out, but it is possible if you really want it and you should contact your local Infinity Solar office to determine suitability or not.
