We will cover the new organization of the National Training Committee along with its new vision and learning strategy. In addition, we will highlight the first part of the three-part trainthe-trainer continuum (T3, or T-Cubed) in the Boy Scouts of America. While this session will not actually deliver the course we will cover an overview of the course outline which introduces teaching techniques and skills to new Scout trainers but is also designed to help all Scouters, regardless of their experience, to present effective training. We will also cover Trainers’ EDGE the course intended for both youth and adult trainers, which would help those who might have trained for other organizations learn the BSA's training techniques, and it will help freshen up the skills of current BSA trainers.

Boy Scout (Youth/Leaders) (3 topics) #1 Den Chief (Scouts AND Cub/Boy Scout LEADERS) [triple period, once] Fran and Betty Harty This course provides Den Chiefs the knowledge and skills they need to be effective in their crucial role in a Cub Scout Den. #2 Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops (ILST) (Scouts AND Boy Scout LEADERS) [triple period, once] John Sammon, Niel Vuolo ILST is the leadership training given primarily by the Scoutmasters and the Senior Patrol Leader to all the youth leaders in their troop. All Boy Scout Troops should conduct an ILST course with every Scout leadership shift, whether it is when the youth get a new troop position or a patrol leadership role, or even when they welcome a new patrol member. The course has three onehour modules that can be presented as individual one-hour sessions or as a combined three-hour block. Going through the ILST allows the Scout to wear the trained patch and is a pre-requisite for attending New Youth Leader Training (NYLT). #3

This course will meet the Training Requirement for a youth LNT Instructor; the Youth wanting to be an LNT trainer must still take the full weekend Trainer course. Learn the 7 principles that are at the core of the Leave No Trace philosophy to help our environment. Learn about the LNT awards, youth and adult, and how you can help your members to earn them. Learn about the NEW LNT Trainer Position of Responsibility for Youth in a Unit and what it requires.

To help keep our youth safe from abuse, learn the Boy Scouts of America’s Youth Protection guidelines, signs of abuse and hoe to report suspected abuse. Learn about the issues you may face as a leader to help provide a safe environment for all youth, and to protect yourself from false accusations. Youth Protection is a Nationally required training to be refreshed/renewed/redone every two years. As of 2013, all direct contact adults, all committee members and CORs must be current and be able to produce their YP trained cards when it is time to re-register.

In 2013, we are moving to mandatory internet advancement – think about the time savings, tree savings and convenience if you knew how to utilize internet advancement – lot’s of opportunity to get into one of these sessions! Learn what Internet Advancement is about and how to utilize it to your advantage; eliminate the paper chase and make sure your scouts’ advancement is recorded. #G4

Become familiar with using the on-line camp registration system for weekend camping. Learn how to obtain your password, and update your registrations and payments; and lots more. With personal schedules as demanding as they are, you will be able to make your reservations at your convenience – on-line registrations are available 24/7!!!

#G5 Basic Camping Skills Workshop [sixty minute sessions, four times] EMS team with David Malatzky and John Restrepo Troop and Pack Leaders! Be better prepared for Camping Trips by taking the E.M.S. Basic Camping Skills Workshop. Experienced campers will also pick up the latest camping information and tips. Camping experts from E.M.S. will demonstrate the basics of Camping and cover many topics of interest encompassing all areas of camping. The goal is to provide you with the tools to effectively deliver the “Outing” in “Scouting.” This will include camp facilities and programs offered by G.N.Y.C. suitable for Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Venturing.

Disaster training for your home or at camp. An informative class on disasters and disasters preparedness for all levels of Scouts. How to mitigate, prepare for, respond to and recover from natural or man-made disasters. The Emergency Preparedness Award and how it is earned. #G11 The Essence of Leadership [single period, twice] Donna Ragusa Ever wonder what makes a great leader? The principles of great leadership are neither new nor complex and don’t demand special talents. Rather they are simply based on strengthening the bonds of respect, responsibility and caring with people around you. The principles can be applied by anyone, anywhere, anytime in Scouting, at home or at work. #G12 Managing District Training [single period, once] Greg Hofer This course is on managing district training – and the key word is managing. Management consists of deciding what courses you want to give, planning and getting ready for it, actually conducting the course, deciding how well you did, and then recycling and starting over to do it even better the next time. How this is applied to the District Training Committee will be discussed.

#G13 How to Organize and Plan an Event [triple period, twice] John Farrell plus Guests/Presenters This course is designed for Scouters who are involved in developing outstanding activities and events. This course offers training in the fundamentals of the planning process, including the rationale behind planning. It will develop your capability for effective participation in the planning process to give leadership to larger scale events and activities. This course will also introduce the Incident Command System (ICS) and provides the foundation for higher level ICS training. This course describes the history, features and principles, and organizational structure of the Incident Command System. This course will provide Council, District and Unit personnel information related to pre-event planning, development of goals and objectives for the event, forming the planning team, event hazard analysis, promotion and budget development. Through relevant examination of past successful special events, the course will give the participant a greater understanding of event/activity planning. An extensive job aid manual will be included in the course. Course Objectives: At the end of this course, the participants will be able to: •

Focus on the core beliefs, aims and methods of Scouting to help committee members learn and identify with different roles and responsibilities to support the unit. Reveal the robust support structure necessary to provide a quality scouting experience on all levels of the program. Review how to form a successful working committee; what you need to know when forming committees beyond the on-line training. #G21 High Adventure Backpacking / Philmont Checklist: How & What To Pack for a Philmont Trek [single period, twice] Michael DiTrani

Hiking at Philmont is often difficult. Weighty packs, steep trails, and high altitudes challenge even the best backpackers. These pack, clothing, and equipment tips and techniques are provided to make the journey easier. It’s more than just packing your bag – it’s a whole mindset – and later in life – it’ll help you pack for that trip to DisneyWorld

#G22 Cub Scout and Boy Scout Disability Awareness [single period, twice] Maria Rodriguez To help leaders assess and identify working with scouts that have special needs through seen and unseen disability awareness. Working with the parents on a scout-individualized plan of action to help them be able to finish requirements for belt loops, pins and activity badges within their scouting year. Encourage these same scouts to feel welcome and connected with a partner through a specialized buddy system and networking with other parents that have similar circumstance that they do not feel alone or without resources.

#G23 Scouting Opportunities Opening the World [double period, once] Sam Goodman / Nick Goldrosen This is a session to alert youth and leaders of the opportunities available outside of their unit experiences. There are distinct benefits that are available, such as leadership training and keeping many older youth in scouting, or igniting their interest in scouting. We would cover non-program specific areas: individual opportunities at the High Adventure bases, TMR specialty camps, NYLT/NAYLE, and PTC among others. Then, we would focus on our own specific experiences in Venturing and Sea Scouting, and the OA and other Boy Scout-specific areas. The intent is to pique participants' interests in other program areas they are not currently involved in.

Designed to help leaders understand the fundamentals of their specific program and give insight into the various leadership roles of the people you will be working with. Leaders will learn their responsibilities and how to keep things organized, fun and exciting, along with information about other resources available to help assist them in their position.

Recruit on a local level and keep that Cub Scout growing. Entice Cubs and parents and host a successful Pack roundup and increase the membership of your unit. The focus is on Cub Scout Recruitment, however, this course will include some ideas for recruitment on other levels of scouting.

#C3 Special Needs for Cub Scouts [single period, once] Ann Marie Borriello MIGHT BE CANCELLED This course will help Scout leaders have a better understanding of how to teach youth with disabilities. It is an interactive discussion with a review of techniques and tips on how to work with Scouts that may have a similar disability. This course will give Leaders a better understanding of what the Scout goes through and what can be done to help them.

#C4 Cub Scout Advancement [single period, once] Ann Marie Borriello MIGHT BE CANCELLED An overview of Cub Scout Advancement from Bobcat to the Arrow of Light. Learn about the requirements for each rank and moving the Cub Scouts up in rank. Even though open to everyone, this course is for all Cubmasters, Advancement Chairmans and parents.

Learn what kind of and how to make crafts with the youth. Participants would focus on making either a Tiger, a Wolf or a Bear craft. With handout on other crafting ideas. It gives the Webelos Scouts and their families an awareness of the troop program, leadership, advancement, and appreciation of Troop organization and relationships. Hoe to make the transition from Cub Scouting to Boy Scouting easier on the boys and let them know what to expect.

Whether you need to lash together a camp gadget, tie off a tarp, or tie that one scout to a tree (we all have one – but only for safety of course), this class is for you. We'll go over the basics you need to know for your Scouts to advance, and time permitting, some more advanced rope skills. #B8

Knife, Axe and Saw Safety - Overview and Discussion. An overview of basic safety and techniques, including: Totin' Chip culture for troops, guidelines for Wolf, Bears and Webelos, and respective Leave No Trace guidelines. After Scout skill basics, discussion time will open with New York "Knife Law ".
